Now, an injury has forced him to abandon that dream and turn professional. IN January of 2004, Casal was hurt durring the U.S. National Championships, and will not be able to make the Olympic team. Instead 18-year-old Junior Welterweight turned professional in March, signing a multi year contract with manager Shelly Finkel. Durring a sucessful amateur career, Casal won the 2002 National Junior Olympics the 2003 "under 19" World Chamtpionship and several New York State Golden Gloves Tiltles. None of the Buffalo/Rochester area sailors managed to qualify for the 2004 Olympics in recent trials at Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and Houston, Texas. In Florida the weekend of 3-21-4, Kathleen Tocke and Jodie Swanson finished 4th in the Yngling Class and 5th in the European Class respectively. Both are members of the storied Buffalo Canoe Club. History
U.S. teams demonstrated basketball at the Olympics in 1904, 1924, and 1928. When the game became an official Olympic sport in 1932, its inventor, James Naismith, was given the honor of tossing the opening jump ball for the first game. The United States completely dominated Olympic basketball competition through 1964, winning 54 consecutive games, often by as many as 50 or 60 points. In 1968, though, most of the top college players passed up the Olympic trials because they didn't want to jeopardize their professional careers, and Yugoslavia was generally favored to win the gold medal over the young, little-known U. S. team. However, the Americans extended the winning streak to 63 games, beating Yugoslavia, 65-50, for the championship. The streak went to 71 games in 1972, but it ended in the Gold Medal game against the Soviet Union, amidst much furore. The U. S. led, 50-49, with three seconds to play. Inbounding the ball from under their own basket, the Soviets twice threw it the length of the court without scoring, but both times the officials ruled that the scoreboard clock had to be reset. On the third try, the court-length pass succeeded and a Soviet player scored the winning basket. The U. S. appealed the decision but lost, and the team unanimously voted not to accept the silver medal.

The United States joined the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) as a member in 1934 and it was the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) that FIBA first recognized as the organization that was responsible for USA teams in international competitions. Until 1974 when the Amateur Basketball Federation of the United States of America (ABAUSA) which later became USA Basektball was formed, various basketball organizations within the U.S. wrestled for control and recognition from FIBA and the U.S. Olympic Committee. A struggle for control of the USA's international teams developed in the 1960s between the AAU and other U.S. basketball organizations. It was in the early 1960s that an organization known as the Basketball Federation of the USA (BFUSA) was organized and began its push to be recognized by FIBA. Consisting of representatives from the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the National Federation of State High School Athletic Associations (NFSHSAA) and the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), BFUSA continued to push for recognition and support in its effort to replace the AAU as the FIBA recognized basketball federation in the United States.

Athens 2004 Basketball InterBasket.Net Home InterBasket.Net Forums The History of Basketball Olympics - March 17, 2004 The game of Basketball was first conceived by a Canadian living in the United States, Dr. James Naismith, in 1891. Basketball debuted at the 1904 Saint Louis Olympic Games, but not as an official sport. The rules and equipment changed rapidly in the first few years. By 1932, the sport was so popular that an international governing body was needed to regulate the game. Thus, the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) was born. In 1935, the International Olympic Committee recognized basketball as one of the world's major sports. During the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games, held under Hitler's reign, basketball was first played as an Olympic sport. It was played outdoors on sand courts. Women's Olympic basketball was first introduced in 1974 during the Montreal Olympic Games. - Matt Blair Olympic Basketball Fun Facts -Compiled by Matt Blair The 1964 Uruguayan team in Tokyo featured the four Duarte brothers: Ricardo, Enrique, Raul, and Luis.

The endowment becomes a permanent trust fund invested by the Institute with only the quarterly earned interest being used for development of the BASKETBALL collections in both the Library and Museum.
Cash donations IN ANY AMOUNT are always welcome, too.

BUILDING PLANS

Future spot for architect's drawing!
The search is on. We have begun looking for land in central Pennsylvania to build a campus for the Institute. Our plan is described in more detail below. Eventually we anticipate that this campus will be one of the largest sports facilities in Pennsylvania.
The IISOH effectively has two divisions the Library and the Museum. The Board of Directors are seeking benefactor(s) to endow each division with a $25 million donation. An endowment will also be sought for the theatre in the amount of $25 million. The benefactor(s) will then be offered the opportunity to name the Library, Museum or theatre, subject to the final approval of the Board of Directors.
Go to the ENDOWMENTS page.

Our plans are to construct facilities on a campus approximately 300 acres in size. This will allow us have room for expansion in the decades to come as we increase the endowment and add sports facilities to the educational program. Sports fields are desirable in order to teach through participation and play. If we have a baseball field we can teach the history of baseball by playing a game using 1860 rules for 3 innings, then playing by modern rules for 3 innings. In the basement of the Museum we could have a bowling alley from the 1800's where the pins have to be set by hand, and right next to it have a modern bowling alley that is fully automated. Our visitors can go bowling either way. Consider the possibilities for each and every sport this means a lot of space is needed.

Cold War on the Courts U.S. and Russian basketball teams play the most controversial game in Olympic history
    by Gerry Brown
Russian Aleksander Belov scores the controversial winning basket in 1972. (Source: AP) It was perhaps the most controversial result in Olympic history. The United States basketball team had been unbeaten in 62 Olympic competitions. Then they met the Soviets in the gold medal game.
USA guard Doug Collins sank two foul shots late in the game, giving the Americans a 50-49 lead with three seconds remaining and what looked like the gold medal. OLYMPICS 2004 Olympics Overview
    More Memorable Olympic Moments

The Soviets inbounded the ball right away but the referee, Renato Righetto of Brazil, blew the whistle with one second on the clock.
Following a conference with the officials, it was determined that the Soviet head coach Vladimir Kondrashkin had called a time out. The Soviets were given a second opportunity to inbound the ball with three seconds left. After a Soviet player heaved a desperation miss from half court, the U.S. began their celebration, which proved to be grossly premature. The Soviet coach, Kondrashkin, protested that the clock had been reset incorrectly and demanded a third chance.
