The Lightning led by as many as 19 points, 57-38, with 12:37 remaining on a lay-up by senior guard Jonathan Rojas (Bronx, NY / Walton). City Tech then went on a tremendous run and cut the lead to one point twice, including to 67-66 on a lay-up by freshman guard Otis Saylee (New York, NY / Seward Park) with 3:49 to go. Junior center Miguel Jorge (Bronx, NY / Dominican Republic) would score four points and junior guard Andre Bagot (Bronx, NY / Sullivan) would add three points down the stretch as the Lightning successfully held off the late charge. The Yellow Jackets were sparked by freshman guard Clyde Forteau (Bronx, NY / St. Raymond's), who ignited the run with five points and the three steals in a three-minute span. Junior center Shacun Malave (Bronx, NY / DeWitt Clinton) added seven points and three blocks. A basket by Bagot with 1:23 to go put Lehman ahead 73-69, and he added a free throw twenty seconds later. Rojas sealed the scoring on a free throw with 29 seconds remaining. Bagot earned the Tournament MVP award as he finished with 13 points, five rebounds, three assists, and three steals. http://www.hchm.org/sports/
Home Newton! The All-time Champions of Kansas Basketball Now on Display... Railroad History Meridian Highway Research Services ... County History Under Coaches Frank Lindley and John Ravenscroft, Newton became the most dominate basketball power in the state of Kansas. Coach Lindley was the head coach of Newton from 1914 though 1945. In that time frame, his teams won 594 games while losing only 115. Under Coach Lindley, Newton was a state semi-finalist finisher, or better, in 20 of 27 years. His teams won 16 Ark Valley titles, 21 Regional tournaments, and 9 State titles. No other school in the Nation can boast that record during that time frame.
At the close of the 1945 basketball season, Coach Lindley called it quits as basketball coach so as to attend to his duties as principal of Newton High School. Lindley chose as his successor, John Ravenscroft who had played for Mr. Lindley as well as being his assistant coach for a few years. Coach Ravenscroft took over in the 1946 season and wasted little time in carrying on the tradition of great basketball teams in Newton. His first team, 1946, won 21 games and lost only 3. They won the Ark Valley League, won the Regional Tournament and beat a very good McPherson team in 3 overtimes to win the State title.
Under the direction of Coach Ravenscroft, Newton teams won 258 games while losing only 49 from 1946 through 1958. They won three State championships, finished second three times and third once. Only in one season, 1953, did Newton fail to get into the quarter-finals of the state tournament. Even that year, Newton's record was 17 wins with 7 losses. Most schools would be thrilled to have such a record.
