James Naismith was the Canadian physical education instructor who invented basketball in 1891. James Naismith was born in Almonte, Ontario and educated at McGill University and Presbyterian Cllege in Montreal. He was the physical education teacher at McGill University (1887 to 1890) and at Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts (1890 to 1895). At Springfield College (which was then the Y.M.C.A. training school), James Naismith, under the direction of American phys-ed specialist Luther Halsey Gulick, invented the indoor sport of basketball. The first formal rules were devised in 1892. Initially, players dribbled a soccer ball up and down a court of unspecified dimensions. Points were earned by landing the ball in a peach basket. Iron hoops and a hammock-style basket were introduced in 1893. Another decade passed, however, before the innovation of open-ended nets put an end to the practice of manually retrieving the ball from the basket each time a goal was scored.

History
U.S. teams demonstrated basketball at the Olympics in 1904, 1924, and 1928. When the game became an official Olympic sport in 1932, its inventor, James Naismith, was given the honor of tossing the opening jump ball for the first game. The United States completely dominated Olympic basketball competition through 1964, winning 54 consecutive games, often by as many as 50 or 60 points. In 1968, though, most of the top college players passed up the Olympic trials because they didn't want to jeopardize their professional careers, and Yugoslavia was generally favored to win the gold medal over the young, little-known U. S. team. However, the Americans extended the winning streak to 63 games, beating Yugoslavia, 65-50, for the championship. The streak went to 71 games in 1972, but it ended in the Gold Medal game against the Soviet Union, amidst much furore. The U. S. led, 50-49, with three seconds to play. Inbounding the ball from under their own basket, the Soviets twice threw it the length of the court without scoring, but both times the officials ruled that the scoreboard clock had to be reset. On the third try, the court-length pass succeeded and a Soviet player scored the winning basket. The U. S. appealed the decision but lost, and the team unanimously voted not to accept the silver medal.

Team posts a 3-0 record that also included 9-2 and 6-0 victories over Stetson. Rollins defeated Stetson 14-13 to claim state title. Sam Sadler was the team captain and Chicago White Sox pitcher Pat Flaherty was the coach. Dr. Thurston Adams directs the Tars to a 12-5 record and a post-season appearance. Basketball disbanded at Rollins due to World War II. After nearly a decade without varsity basketball, the Tars reinstate basketball at the varsity level with Jack McDowell serving as the head coach. The lightly regarded Tars pull a major upset on December 8, 1950 as they edge mighty Miami 59-58. A set shot by Pete Fay at the buzzer gives Rollins the victory. Despite an 8-13 overall record, the Tars earn a spot in the NAIA post-season tournament in Dan Nyimicz’s first season as head coach. Dick Bezemer averages 17.9 points per game and is honored as a first team NAIA All-America selection

On three different occasions fouls were called on Woody just as he had thrown the ball in the basket for a field goal, and no possible motive for the umpires verdicts could be found except his desire to give the visitors the short end of it. Despite the handicap, the Crimson athletes showed wonderful tenacity and were in the van at many stages." Spring, 1921

As the Goldey-Beacom Lightning concluded its fourth losing season in a row, the locker-room echoed with the chant “4-23, Never Again!” The team will carry this new mantra into next season as it looks to build on the advances made this year in defensive and individual achievements. With a good nucleus of players returning, Coach Hammond is excited about next season and the team’s ability to compete in the conference. Hammond states “With the support that Chris Morgan and our administration give us, it is only a matter of time before we make our mark on the CACC.”

"Basketball is a game easy to play and difficult to master"
James Naismith Did you know that James Naismith invented the game of basketball in 1891? Did you know that women have been playing basketball since 1892? It's true! There have been many pioneers leading the way for todays players. Since Title IX was introduced twenty six years ago, many more women have been finding out that basketball is the best game in the world! What other game keeps right on going after a score? Think about it: Football, hockey, soccer, baseball and most other contests stop and celebrate after a score. Not basketball! You score, you get back on defense. You miss the shot, you get back on defense! There's no time to cry or pout, the game goes on with or without you. Basketball is the essence of zen in action. You must stay in the moment or you will be lost! Check out the Drill of the Month for tips on improving your game.
