Irvine Valley College's men's basketball team made a name for itself long before its first game by announcing that Southern California coaching legend Bill Mulligan would head the inaugural 1992-93 team. Mulligan, who is the winningest coach in UC Irvine history, came to IVC just five victories short of 500 career collegiate wins. Mulligan's squads improved each of his three years at IVC. He led IVC's first team to a record of 14-17 and a berth in the Southern California Community College playoffs. The 1993-94 team finished with an 18-15 record. Mulligan's final year at Irvine Valley was the breakthrough season for the young program. All-state center Keon Clark, who later played at UNLV, led the Lasers to a 22-12 record. Mulligan's departure following that season led to an extensive search for a capable successor. Jerry Hernandez, who had been an assistant on Cerritos' 32-2 team, was named the new head coach. In his first year, Hernandez led IVC to a record of 16-17 and the first road playoff win in the program's history. Hernandez made some more history the following year, capturing the program's first Orange Empire Conference title. The Lasers finished the year ranked ninth in the state and fifth in Southern California and had a record of 26-8 overall and 12-2 in conference.

http://www.haverford.edu/athletics/basketballw/history.htm
Coach Captains Roster Schedule ... Haverford Home Page History Women's basketball was among the first three sports the college adopted when it went "fully-coed" in 1980-81. The founding coach was Julie Soreiro, who moved on to head coaching positions at Philadelphia U. and Penn before her current assignment at Colorado College. The program grew throughout the 1980's under such mentors as eventual U.S. Lacrosse coach Sue Stahl, and had many fine players, though lacking a consistent scorer.
That description was finally appropriated by Amy Taylor '92, who became Haverford's first 1,000-point scorer. Taylor was a two-time all-Middle Atlantic Conference performer and Haverford captain, a three-time basketball MVP, and the 1992 winner of the Varsity Cup, Haverford's highest athletic award. In her junior season, the program reached .500 for the first time under new head coach Dick Wiseman.
Besides Taylor '92, other Fords who found success in life after basketball include Beth Chittick '91, who battled back to play with torn ACLs in both knees to play and is now a veterinarian, and all-Centennial selections Koren Miller '95, Claudette Pirwitz '96, and Colleen Leonard '98. Only injuries kept Claudette and Colleen from reaching the 1,000-point mark, and very few teams could contain these talented and dedicated players.

Coach Captains Roster Schedule ... Haverford Home Page History Many historians believe that the first intercollegiate men's basketball game in the East was Haverford's 6-4 defeat of Temple in 1895. The college did not have a varsity, however, until 1918-19 when intramural player Ben Cooper '18 inspired the program after his graduation. The Fords' men's basketball MVP award is named for Cooper, who later served Haverford as alumni secretary.
Playing home games in the friendly confines of the (now Ryan) Gymnasium, Haverford produced its first 1,000-point career scorer in slashing guard Phil D'Arrigo '56, who once scored 100 points (48 and 52) in successive games against excellent opponents.
Alumni Field House opened in 1957 to chants of "Roll, Fords, Roll" as former Penn star Ernie Prudente built a fast-break offense around quality big men. Larry Forman '60, an acrobatic 1,000-point scorer, led HC to wins over Delaware and Navy. Haverford regularly qualified for the Middle Atlantic Conference playoffs behind 6'8" Hunter Rawlings '66, who was MAC South MVP, an NCAA Postgraduate Scholar, and is now president of Cornell University.
The program awakened after a sluggish decade in 1995-96 when senior 1,000-point scorers Jamal Elliott and Chris Guiton helped the Fords advance to the Centennial Conference semifinals. Guiton, a great long-range shooter who later played professionally in Europe, and Elliott, a magical playmaker, both earned first-team all-Centennial during their careers and were co-recipients of The Varsity Cup, Haverford's highest athletic honor.

HISTORY of PJC SPORTS
Pensacola Junior College held its first day of classes on Sept. 13, 1948 with an enrollment of 128 students. As increasing enrollment produced the demand for student activities, Lou Ross, a social science instructor, introduced PJC's first basketball team in 1949 and coached the first baseball team in 1951. Ross served as the director of athletics and also served as the regional vice president of the National Junior College Athletic Association.
By 1951, intercollegiate sports included basketball, baseball, and tennis, and PJC became a member of a newly organized junior college conference made up of Florida schools.
In 1955, the women's sports program was introduced. Although women students at PJC did not participate in athletics at the intercollegiate level, they did participate in the annual Sports Day held by Florida colleges and universities. The intramural program also began in the mid-1950s under the direction of the Physical Education Department.
By 1963, PJC's athletic program had grown to include basketball, baseball, tennis, golf, track and field, a trampoline team and a swim team. Coach Bill Clendenin lead the men's basketball team to win the 1963 state championship. Since then, PJC has had several conference, state and national championship teams.

"GUS" STEVENS In the Spring of 1952 Allen Bradfield approached VU President Dr. Isaac K. Beckes about the possibility of trying his hand at coaching the basketball team. Bradfield emphasized that while he had no experience, and had never played the game, he nevertheless had a great personal interest in the sport and thought he might be able to win some games. Above all he had a plan. First he asked Beckes if he would consider sending him to a summer basketball course at the University of Illinois, also he wanted to get out of the YMCA Industrial League and attempt to build a full schedule with other colleges. Beckes agreed to appoint him as the coach and support the program further if the team could win half its games. A college athletic dynasty was launched with that simple statement and in a few short years it reverberated nationally in junior college basketball circles.

Special Section: Terms of Service (updated 01/10/01). Archives VU basketball history: Part I, The Early Years By ROBERT R. "GUS" STEVENS One hundred years ago basketball at Vincennes University was a game to play between football and baseball seasons. In the Jan. 22, 1904 issue of the Vincennes Commercial it was announced that an athletic association had been formed for the purpose of starting a basketball team at the university. Season schedules were not as fixed as they are today, but developed more from a system of challenges. The first challenge for the new VU team came from Edwardsport High School where a very successful team had been in place for several years. So on Friday, Feb. 5, 1904, the newly created VU basketball team boarded the train for Edwardsport, along with 35 fans headed by VU President Dr. James E. Manchester. This first VU team consisted of Thomas Hoke (captain) of Carlisle, and Henry Campbell of Sandborn at forwards; Roscoe Cauble of Vincennes at center; and Clarence Simonson of Freelandville and Frank Pickle of Bicknell at guards. The team substitute was Clyde Cleveland of Carlisle.

The Bronze Baby - is awarded annually to the CIAU Women's Basketball Champions. The trophy dates back to 1922 when it was donated by the Student's Council of McGill University. Until 1970, the Women's Interuniversity Athletic Union(WIAU) in Quebec and Ontario awarded the Bronze baby to their conference championship basketball team. In 1971, the WIAU was dissolved as a conference and the trophy was retired and returned to the donor, McGill University. McGill students then offered "her" to the Canadian Women's Interuniversity Athletic Union in June of 1972. The figure is a replica of a statue that was on the grounds of Dunfermline College of Physical Education in Scotland.

THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE
Scott and Roger Lambson, brothers who attended Murray's Mount Vernon Academy several years ago, have always loved the scene in the movie "Dances With Wolves" where the main character said he "wanted to see the frontier before the frontier was gone."
In the same way, they wanted to capture the spirit of small-school prep basketball before it was gone, too. That's why they made the documentary movie "Where It's Still a Game," a film that takes an in-depth look into Utah's Class 1-A boys basketball, from its beginnings nearly 90 years ago to its current makeup.
The documentary focuses primarily on last year's 1-A state tournament, but it also tells dozens of other stories about the characters, coaches, fans and even media members that are involved with the state's original classification.
"I always knew that 1-A basketball in Utah would make a great story for a movie if it was done right," said Scott Lambson, 24, who played on Mount Vernon's state runner-up team in the mid-1990s and is now the Patriots' coach. "The small towns produce such interesting stories every year, and the private schools from the Salt Lake area add such diversity and such contrast, we figured it would be interesting for people from all over the state to see."
