ISBN: 0-9703578-2-6 Inside: A Tribute To SEC and LSU Great Pete Maravich, the greatest scorer in the history of college basketball3,667 points in just three seasons (1969-71); without the three-point shot.
During its storied history on the hardwood, the Southeastern Conference has won eight NCAA Championships and three NIT Championships. Remarkably, three of those NCAA titles have come during the last eight years (1994, 1996, and 1998). In 1998-99, the league had its string of consecutive Final Four appearances end at six, however, it also marked the eighth year in a row that the conference placed a team in the Elite Eight. Furthermore, during the last nine NCAA Tournaments (1993-2001), the SEC's nine Final Four appearances is tied with the ACC for the most by any league during that span.
Since 1990, the SEC has become the nation’s most successful basketball-playing conference. During that time, the league has seen two of its teams win three national championships (Arkansas in 1994, Kentucky in 1996 and 1998). On two separate occasions the SEC has had two teams in the Final Four during the same season (Arkansas and Florida in 1994 and Kentucky and Mississippi State in 1996). Additionally, every SEC team has made at least one NCAA Tournament appearance in the last seven seasons, demonstrating clearly the impressive parity and balanced strength of the league over the past few years.
Through the years the SEC has produced some of college basketball's finest players and coaches. The SEC has produced two National Players of theYear in LSU's Pete Maravich and Shaquille O'Neal and three GTE Academic All-American of the Year honors, including Georgia's two-time winner Alec Kessler. The league has produced seven inductees into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, in addition to its many All-Americans. Furthermore, from Kentucky's Adolph Rupp, to LSU's Dale Brown, to Auburn's Joel Eaves and Mississippi State's Babe McCarthy, the SEC boasts a long list of legendary coaches, with an impressive group of newcomers like Arkansas' Nolan Richardson, Kentucky's Tubby Smith and Ole Miss' Rob Barnes' recently following in the heavy footsteps of their successful, leading predecessors.

With a double championship in the 2002 Big West Tournament the UCSB men and women's basketball teams have entered the sports history books. It is the first time with the present Big West lineup that one university has taken both titles in the same basketball season. The men's 60-56 win over Utah State on March 9 was also the first time in the tournament's 27-year history that the Gauchos have claimed that title. On the same day, the women's team took Pacific 64-53 to clinch their side of the Big West competition for the sixth year in a row. As conference winners, both teams received automatic bids to the National Collegiate Athletic Association tournaments, also known as "The Big Dance." The men, who were last invited to the dance 12 years ago, were paired with Pac-10 winner Arizona. The women drew Louisiana Tech. At press time, the men's team had lost to the Wildcats 86-81, and the women were awaiting their game with the Lady Techsters.

The Origin of Basketball. The them. It was the start of the first basketballgame and the finish of the trouble with that class. .
    http://www.ncecbvi.org/students/tyson/bball/b-ball3.HTML
    The Origin of Basketball
The challenge that inspired the invention of basketball came from Dr. Luther Halsey Gulick, Jr., the superintendent of physical education at the international YMCA Training School. During the summer session of 1891, Gulick introduced a new course in the psychology of play, and Naismith was one of his students. In class discussions, Gulick brought up an issue that was weighing on his mind: the need for new indoor game "that would be interesting, easy to learn, and easy to play in the winter and by artificial light." Though the class didn't follow up on Gulick's challenge to invent such a game, Naismith found himself revisiting the issue a few months later when the physical education faculty met to discuss what was becoming a persistent problem. With the end of the fall sports season, the school once again confronted the distaste many students felt for the gymnasium work that was mandatory during the winter months. One class was particularly incorrigible, and two instructors had already tried and failed to devise activities that would interest them. During the meeting, Naismith later wrote, he expressed his opinion that, "The trouble is not with the men, but with the system that we are using. The kind of work for this particular class should be of a recreative nature, something that would appeal to their play instincts."

    http://www.girltech.com/pages/sports/basketballHistory.cfm
Basketball invented in 1891! Dr. James Naismith was a teacher at the YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts. One day, while trying to find a way to interest his bored gym students, he made up the game basketball. In his version, players used a soccer ball (of course they couldn't use a basketball because it hadn't been invented yet). For hoops they used peach baskets nailed to the lower rail of the gym balcony. There were nine players per team instead of five. Oh yeah and they were all male. It didn't take women long to catch on. The first women's basketball team was started just a few weeks later when teachers from a nearby school saw Dr. Naismith's students playing and thought it looked like fun. The next year Smith College in Northhampton Massachusetts started the first women's college team. Basketball was incredibly popular among women in the early 1900s. Women's and men's games were often played together in "double headers." But in 1923 the first lady, Mrs. Herbert Hoover caught wind of the double headers and created a national committee to check it out. The committee was SHOCKED by what they found. Young women athletes playing in front of male audiences!! SCANDALOUS! The practice was stopped. Soon after states began to close women's sports programs. It was believed that women were too dainty for vigorous physical activity. WHAT'S UP WITH THAT!!
