Athens 2004 Basketball InterBasket.Net Home InterBasket.Net Forums The History of Basketball Olympics - March 17, 2004 The game of Basketball was first conceived by a Canadian living in the United States, Dr. James Naismith, in 1891. Basketball debuted at the 1904 Saint Louis Olympic Games, but not as an official sport. The rules and equipment changed rapidly in the first few years. By 1932, the sport was so popular that an international governing body was needed to regulate the game. Thus, the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) was born. In 1935, the International Olympic Committee recognized basketball as one of the world's major sports. During the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games, held under Hitler's reign, basketball was first played as an Olympic sport. It was played outdoors on sand courts. Women's Olympic basketball was first introduced in 1974 during the Montreal Olympic Games. - Matt Blair Olympic Basketball Fun Facts -Compiled by Matt Blair The 1964 Uruguayan team in Tokyo featured the four Duarte brothers: Ricardo, Enrique, Raul, and Luis.

can you tell me about the inventor of the basketball? How has the basketball changed since it was first made? How has the game changed since it was first played?
    Jason (age 12)
    Beck Middle School
Cherry Hill,New Jersey,UNited States of America
    A:
    Hi Jason,
According to The Basketball Hall of Fame's history page , basketball began in 1891 at what is now Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts (it used to be called the "School for Christian Workers", and they used a YMCA gymnasium). The inventor was James Naismith, and his original 13 rules of the game can be found on the web site. He was given "14 days to create an indoor game that would provide an `athletic distraction` for a rowdy class through the brutal New England winter."
You can browse the NBA's rules on the web (there are too many to inlclude here) at the NBA's rules of basketball page . Lots of things like having a special rule for players who shatter backboards probably didn't occur to Mr. Naismith.
The basketball itself has changed only a little over time. The original balls I believe were made of a leather covering over an inflated rubber ball, perhaps with a layer of cloth for stiffness in between. These days you can still buy balls made like that, but there is now a large variety of imitation leathers and plastics that balls are made of. I just went shopping for a basketball a couple of months ago and found a dizzying array of all different models at all different prices at the local discount store.

The documentary series will be versioned as a public radio series, for classroom use, and to support a youth engagement campaign focused on improving inter-group relations. The project will be versioned for classroom use and to support a major community outreach initiative that will partner with national organizations to engage at-risk youth in issues of inclusiveness and community building through the stories of the series.
