Preventing Shin Pain in Athletes With the start of the spring track season, many of your runners and jumpers will experience some type of shin pain. In many of the cases the shin pain can be prevented, and sometimes totally avoided. Shin pain will not only affect runners, but also jumpers and field event athletes. Especially those athletes that incorporate plyometrics in their training programs. In most cases of shin pain, the athlete will experience pain along the inside of the tibia( shin bone). Pain will run along the whole length of the bone or may be localized to the lower third of the of the leg . This type of shin pain is called Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome. It affects the posterior tibialis tendon and the periostiom of the medial tibia( periostitis; inflammation of periostiom). Its main causes are overuse, poor foot biomechanics, improper footwear and training errors. This time of year many shin problems come from changing running surfaces. Most indoor track athletes train on hard surfaces all winter, and the change to outdoor surfaces brings on symptoms. These symptoms may appear because of an increase of training volume when going outdoors, and because of muscle, tendon and bone are adapting to the new stresses of softer surfaces. Improper Foot Biomechanics Most cases of anterior shin pain are a associated with improper foot biomechanics. Abnormal foot and ankle pronation is one of the main factors in the cause of shin pain in athletes. When an athlete over pronates, there is traction put on the posterior tibialis tendon and the Soleus muscle is put in a mechanical disadvantage. Over pronation also leads to stressing the arch of the foot and to having the load transfer to the bones of the shin instead of the musculature of the foot and shin. The ankle and foot musculature act as shock absorbers to the lower extremities, and if they are compromised, shin pain and injury are possible.

NORTHEAST COMMUNITY COLLEGE
Transfer Course Equivalencies
Updated May 2004 The following is a list of current course equivalents between Northeast CC and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln; credit at NU is stated in semester hours. If a specific UNL course equivalent has not been identified, other notations are used.
  • GNCR; course transfers as UNL general hours
  • SUBJ; course transfers as subject area hours (e.g., ENGLXXX, MATHXXX) not assigned to a specific course
  • NDAP; excess transfer course hours which are included in the equivalency and generally not degree-applicable
  • VCRD; vocational/skill development course: limited application to a UNL degree
  • HSCR; course is high school or remedial level; hours and course do not transfer
Contact your NU college to determine whether a course will be applicable to your intended major. While every effort is made to keep this list up to date, courses may be added or deleted at any time. Courses not listed may also be transferable and degree applicable. Equivalencies are date-specific and dependent upon when the course was taken. Equivalencies no longer in effect are not included in the list, but will be included in NU's evaluation of transfer credit if taken during the period the equivalency was in effect. In some cases, two or more transfer courses may be needed to achieve the equivalent of a UNL course. For an official evaluation of transfer credits, students are encouraged to apply for admission to NU, and submit complete high school and post-secondary transcripts. Begin your search for courses by selecting one of Northeast CC's subject abbreviations:

CollegeSports.com Wire Email this to a friend November 15, 1998 By Ken Rosenthal The Baltimore Sun COLLEGE PARK, Md. - All right, nothing could top Joe Smith's jaw-dropping college debut in 1993 an epic 26-point, nine-rebound performance in a nationally televised 84-83 overtime victory over Georgetown. Steve Francis arrived with far greater fanfare. He faced a far lesser opponent. But he made his first game at Maryland downright electrifying, anyway. He is all that, folks. All that, and maybe more. Point guard, shooting guard, it doesn't matter. Francis is Maryland's best player, and this indeed looks like coach Gary Williams' best team in his 10 years at College Park. A 113-46 victory over Western Carolina means nothing, but the Terps go a legitimate nine deep. Francis and Terence Morris are such breathtaking talents, Laron Profit and Obinna Ekezie might not even be the stars anymore.

Russell Freedman
Russell Freedman rarely writes a biography without receiving accolades. His latest is the story of the fourth of seven children born to poor Swedish immigrants, and it seems Babe's life was set up for struggle. During her life she fought poverty, gender stereotyping, the world's confusion at a female athlete whose passion for, and skill at sports crossed boundaries, until she met her final contender-cancer. Freedman does an excellent job of surrounding Babe in historical and personal context so her individualistic and sometimes apparently self-proud persona makes total sense. The book is filled with wonderful photographs, pithy quotations, and the depth of research and understanding for which Freeman is deservedly esteemed. 2000, Clarion, $18.00, Ages 9 up.
