GENERAL INFORMATION
Paralympics Team Selection in many sports is going on NOW . Check www.usparalympics.org to learn about Paralympic Team selection in your sport.
General Registration Forms for the 2004 Paralympic Games are being distributed to all candidates for the U.S. Team. If you have received a packet in the U.S. Postal Service mail with forms from the U.S. Olympic Committee and the Athens Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games, PLEASE complete the forms and return them to U.S. Paralympics immediately. IN MANY CASES THESE FORMS ARE REQUIRED PRIOR TO THE FINAL TEAM SELECTION. IF YOU RECEIVED THE FORMS, PLEASE COMPLETE AND RETURN THEM IMMEDIATELY.
April 1st marks the start of U.S. Antidoping's second 2nd quarter Out of Competition Testing Program. If you are a candidate or nominee for the 2004 Paralympic Team, or if you are otherwise enrolled in the USADA OOC program, and if you have not already sent USADA your Athlete Location Form, you must do so immediately to avoid a possible missed test. Names are drawn for testing and if USADA does not have your form of if you are not where your form says you will be, you will receive a missed test. Three missed tests are considered a doping violation and a two-year suspension form your sport may result. If your plans or schedule change from how your Athlete Location Form reads, you must inform USADA via email at update@usantidoping.org

Edie Boyer
Hockey's loss is track and field's gain in the case of Edie Boyer. In 1995 the Minnesotan won her first national championship in the discus, after finishing no higher than 6th in previous years. Still, she was no stranger to winning a national title. From 1981 to 1983, Boyer played hockey with the Minnesota Checkers, who won the national senior title in each of those seasons. Hockey was just one of the sports that the athletic Boyer tried. One of six children in her "sports-oriented" family, she also played soccer, basketball and softball during those high school years. She dabbled with track as a sophomore, making it to the state championships in the high jump, shot and discus. Of her high jump best of 5-6, she clarifies, "That was over 40 pounds ago." Boyer earned a basketball scholarship to North Dakota State, where she played power forward. "Sometimes my hockey style carried over into basketball," she admits. The Bison made it to the NCAA Division II Final Four in 1986 and '88, and into the quarterfinals in 1987. As a senior, she got the urge to try track again. "Early on, I was not a big fan of track and field," she explains. "As a matter of fact, I hated it because I had preferred playing in team sports. During my fourth year in college, I gave it another shot." The results promised more; she threw the shot 48-7.5 and placed 3rd in the NCAA II nationals.

BY RICHARD E. LAPCHICK ... Richard E. Lapchick CLICK HERE to go to Richard's Article Index. The Kobe Bryant Case: Athletes, Violence, Stereotypes and the Games We Play by Richard E. Lapchick Special for the Sports Business Journal Like so many who follow sports, I have been glued to the news about Kobe Bryant , now charged with sexual assault. Let me say up front that I am not a Lakers fan. I was not even a fan of Kobe until this year when I read of the turmoil he went through with his parents when he fell in love with and married his wife Vanessa . That made me pay more attention to the seemingly softer, loving side of the sports icon. That made the charge against him even more striking. I have spent nearly 30 years studying sport and social issues. Each time an athlete is arrested I take note and fear the inevitable consequences. Some in the media and many fans will claim that athletes, especially basketball and football players, are more violent than ordinary men. Stories about basketball and football players battering or sexually assaulting a woman are so common in the press, averaging nearly 100 cases a year for the last five years, that people barely take notice now. Averaging two reports a week for five year makes the general public simply note, "another example of a violent sport."

Baseball Men's Olympic basketball became an official sport in 1936 at the Berlin Games. The tournament was held outdoor on courts of clay and sand. On the day of the final it rained heavily, turning the courts to mud, which made it difficult to dribble and undoubtedly contributed to the low score of 19-8. In the end, the United States defeated Canada for the gold. In 1989 the Federation Internationale de Basketball Amateur (FIBA) membership voted to allow professionals to join amateurs in the Olympics. Women's basketball made its Olympic debut at the 1976 Games in Montreal, Canada. The Soviet women won the gold medal, and the U.S. women took home the silver medal. Click a link to

FRONT OFFICE BIOS
DEAN A. SPANOS
President - Chief Executive Officer
Dean Spanos stood at the helm and expertly navigated the Chargers through a very trying period in team history.
The organization lost its architect and Dean lost a close friend in April when General Manager John Butler passed away following a nine-month battle with cancer. A loss of such magnitude could have had a devastating emotional and psychological impact on a close-knit organization like the Chargers, but Spanos' calming influence and leadership orchestrated a smooth and seamless transition from Butler to new General Manager A.J. Smith.
Despite a trying offseason, Spanos has managed to keep optimism high.
Along with changes in the front office, the normal comings and goings on the team's roster provided plenty of excitement heading into the 2003 season.
Dean and his father, Alex, once again provided the financial backing to give Smith and Head Coach Marty Schottenheimer the means to improve the team. The most prominent addition came when the Chargers signed Pro Bowl wide receiver David Boston to a $40 million contract. Every time his staff asked, Spanos provided by signing top free agents, including Boston, fullback Lorenzo Neal, tackle Solomon Page and safety Kwamie Lassiter.
Spanos' commitment is no surprise as his guiding hand has been felt throughout the Chargers' organization and the entire San Diego community since the day he moved his family to La Jolla in 1984.

An early civil rights organizer and leading confidante of Martin Luther King Jr., he was pastor of the West Hunter Street Baptist Church in Atlanta, Ga. throughout his civil rights career (196190). He was King's chosen successor as head of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) (196877). Although he was a competent leader, the SCLC never regained the influence it had under King. He resigned the SCLC leadership to run unsuccessfully for Andrew Young's congressional seat (1977). Turning away from the civil rights movement, he devoted his attention to the West Hunter Street Baptist Church and the issues of worldwide peace.
