When I wrote my two books about women’s professional basketball—“Katy Steding—Pro Basketball Pioneer” and “Playing in a New League—The Women of the American Basketball League’s First Season”—I began to see how coaches have played important roles in the lives of women athletes. Speaking directly with several current or former college coaches for these books also sparked my interest in the subject, as did my reading of the few other books written by or about women college coaches. The more I learned about the subject of women college coaches, the more I realized just how important these women are—as people who have fought for better treatment of female athletes and sports professionals, as key role models for female athletes, as working women fighting hard to succeed within the still male dominated world of sports.
