Tooley JIM TOOLEY,
Executive Director

USA Basketball President Tom Jernstedt announced on Dec. 11, 2000 that Jim Tooley, USA Basketball Assistant Executive Director for Men's Programs since March 1993, was selected as USA Basketball's Executive Director effective Jan. 1, 2001. Tooley succeeded Warren S. Brown, who served as Executive Director for over eight years in the position. "USA Basketball's Executive Committee was unanimous in its selection of Jim Tooley as our next Executive Director," said Jernstedt. "Jim possesses over seven years of experience within USA Basketball and the committee believes that his knowledge of the organization and its constituents was vital for a smooth transition and for the organization's continued growth. Also, having overseen USA Basketball men's program, Jim understands that USA Basketball's primary mission is affording its athletes, no matter the level, the support and resources required to be successful in any international competition." Joining the USA Basketball staff in March 1993 as Assistant Executive Director for the Men's Programs, Tooley's responsibilities included overseeing all facets of the men's program. Tooley was accountable for men's team trials, training camps, exhibition games, international competitions, and served as the staff liaison to all men's competition committees.

Curt Schilling, star pitcher of the Arizona Diamondbacks, wasn't always considered major league material. Born with the natural ability to throw a screaming fastball, Schilling assumed he could ride his talent to the big leagues. But Schilling soon realized that if he was going to succeed in baseball, he needed to change his attitude. And he did just that. Through hard work on and off the field, Schilling has become one of the most commanding and respected hurlers in the game.

Jennifer Capriati was a teen tennis phenom at age fourteen. Then, Capriati began to feel burdened by the pressures of fame, fortune, and the need to win. Three years after her professional debut, she left tennis to try to live the life of a normal teenager. After some very public mistakes, Capriati decided to turn her life around and try to regain her love of the sport. In 1996, she reemerged on the tennis scene. And by the turn of the century she had proven that she still had the skills, talent, and determination to be a superstar.

Basketball
Men's Olympic basketball became an official sport in 1936 at the Berlin Games. The tournament was held outdoor on courts of clay and sand. On the day of the final it rained heavily, turning the courts to mud, which made it difficult to dribble and undoubtedly contributed to the low score of 19-8. In the end, the United States defeated Canada for the gold. In 1989 the Federation Internationale de Basketball Amateur (FIBA) membership voted to allow professionals to join amateurs in the Olympics. Women's basketball made its Olympic debut at the 1976 Games in Montreal, Canada. The Soviet women won the gold medal, and the U.S. women took home the silver medal.

Sara Gogol was born and raised in Chicago but now lives in Portland, Oregon, where she enjoys hiking, bicycling, and sea kayaking in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. She teaches writing, literature, and women’s studies at Portland Community College. She has written on a wide variety of subjects, and her published books include Katy Steding—Pro Basketball Pioneer (Lerner Publications) and Playing in a New League—The Women of the American Basketball League’s First Season (Masters Press).
An Interview with Sara Gogol
Why did you write this book? When I wrote my two books about women’s professional basketball—“Katy Steding—Pro Basketball Pioneer” and “Playing in a New League—The Women of the American Basketball League’s First Season”—I began to see how coaches have played important roles in the lives of women athletes. Speaking directly with several current or former college coaches for these books also sparked my interest in the subject, as did my reading of the few other books written by or about women college coaches. The more I learned about the subject of women college coaches, the more I realized just how important these women are—as people who have fought for better treatment of female athletes and sports professionals, as key role models for female athletes, as working women fighting hard to succeed within the still male dominated world of sports. Wh at has it been like for you to talk to so many women coaches I talked with over 60 women who either are coaching or have coached at colleges across the country. Speaking with these women was very interesting. They’re lively people with plenty to say about what it’s like to coach their sports, to push young women to excel, to listen to their athletes’ hopes and dreams. The coaches told me many entertaining and sometimes funny stories. As I wrote
