BASIC is a family of high-level programming languages . Originally devised as an easy-to-use tool, it became widespread on home microcomputers in the , and remains popular to this day in a handful of heavily evolved dialects. BASIC's name, coined in classic, computer science tradition to produce a nice acronym , stands for B eginner's A ll-purpose S ymbolic I nstruction C ode ,¹ tied to the name of an unpublished paper by the language's co-inventor, Thomas Kurtz (the name thus having no relation to C. Background
Prior to the mid- , computers were highly expensive tools used only for special-purpose tasks, which ran a single "job" at a time. During the 1960s, however, computer prices started to drop to where even small companies could afford them, and their speed increased to the point they often sat idle, without jobs to run. Programming languages of the era tended to be designed, like the machines on which they ran, for specific purposes such as scientific formula processing. Since single-job machines were expensive, the tendency was to consider execution speed the most important feature of all. In general, they were hard to use, and tended toward a certain "ugliness."

Applesoft BASIC programming language
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
The first BASIC dialect on the Apple II computer was Integer BASIC , coded and hand-assembled by Steve Wozniak , one of the founders of Apple Computer . It could only handle numbers between -32767 and 32767 and had some limitations with respect to string arrays, but it was fast and bug-free. Enter Bill Gates and Microsoft . Apple was looking for a new version of BASIC for the Apple II Plus computer with 48 KB of RAM . After their success with Altair BASIC , Microsoft was the BASIC vendor of choice at the time; Apple licensed a 10 KB assembly language version of BASIC called "Applesoft." It was similar to BASIC implementations on other -based computers: it used line numbers, spaces were not necessary in lines, plus it had some killer features that Integer BASIC lacked:
  • Atomic strings. A string is no longer an array of characters (like in C ); it is instead a garbage-collected object (like in Scheme and Java ). This allows for string arrays; DIM A$(10) got you a vector of ten string variables.

Basic is a very powerful language as a tool for the novice programmer. Basic allows for a wide range of applications, and it has many versions. However, as long as the emphasis is on the techniques of programming and problem solving, the specific syntax is easy to follow.
Significant Language Features
Basic is a multi-platform language because many basic compilers use the same types of routines. Basic allows:
  • Loops
  • Input from the keyboard
  • Menu Driven Applications
  • System Commands - These are words that make the system perform a specific task immediately.
  • Structured Programming
  • Subroutines
  • Built-In Functions
  • User-Defined Functions
  • Arrays, sorting, and searches
Areas of Application
Basic has many strong points, such as:
  • Easy to learn for beginners
  • Adds powerful additional features for the advanced user
  • Is designed for interactive use rather than batch work
  • Lends itself to learning by hands-on practical use
and is therefore suitable for both the professional and non-professional.

History
Microsoft released Visual Basic in 1987. It was the first visual development tool from Microsoft, and it was to compete with C, C++, Pascal and other well-known programming languages. From the start, Visual Basic wasn't a hit. It wasn't until release 2.0 in 1991 that people really discovered the potential of the language, and with release 3.0 it had become the fastest-growing programming language on the market.
What Is Visual Basic?
Programmers have undergone a major change in many years of programming various machines. For example what could be created in minutes with Visual Basic could take days in other languages such: as "C" or "Pascal". Visual Basic provides many interesting sets of tools to aid you in building exciting applications. Visual Basic provides these tools to make your life far more easier because all the real hard code is already written for you. With controls like these you can create many applications which use certain parts of windows. For example, one of the controls could be a button, which we have demonstrated in the "Hello World" program below. First create the control on the screen, then write the code which would be executed once the control button is pressed. With this sort of operation in mind, simple programs would take very little code. Why do it like the poor old "C" programmer who would have to write code to even display a window on the screen, when Visual Basic already has this part written for you.
