Founded in 1938, the IBAF is the International BAseball Federation recognized by the International Olympic Committee. Established since 1994 in Lausanne, the Olympic Capital, the IBAF organizes the Baseball World Cup, World Championships in their different categories, the Intercontinental Cup and the Baseball Olympic Tournament, securing the development and expansion of this sport all over the world.
2. When was Baseball born?
There are several different theories in answer to this question. The general belief was that Baseball was first introduced in 1839 in the United States as an alternative to the British sport of rounders. The sport spread quickly around the world shortly after. Cuba, another Baseball haven, was introduced to the sport in 1864. A newspaper article from Switzerland shows that a Baseball game took place in 1870 outside of the city of Zurich. A teacher from the United States introduced Baseball to Japan in 1873.

Traditional martial arts like judo and kendo are popular, as are sports imported from overseas, such as baseball and soccer (football). Many Japanese go to the sea for surfing and scuba diving in the summer, while skiing and snowboarding are popular winter pursuits. MAJOR SPORTS
Baseball is one of the most popular spectator sports in Japan. There are 12 professional baseball teams, six in the Central League and six in the Pacific League. The teams in each league play about 140 games each during the season, at the end of which the two league winners meet in the Japan Series. In recent years, more and more Japanese players have been moving to the United States to play in Major League Baseball. Two of the most famous are Suzuki Ichiro and Matsui Hideki. Amateur baseball is also popular, and many schoolchildren play the game through local Little Leagues or school baseball clubs. The National High-School Baseball Championship, which is held twice a year, is fought out among schools that have survived tough qualifying rounds to represent their prefectures.

Olympic sports safe ... for now
The International Olympic Committee has decided softball, modern pentathlon and baseball are safe as Olympic sports until 2012. The IOC said no sports would be excluded from the Games for the next eight years. The trio of sports faced expulsion at a 2002 IOC meeting in Mexico, but were given a reprieve when members resisted a proposal to drop them all together. At that meeting in Mexico, IOC members voted to postpone any cuts of entire sports until after the 2004 Summer Olympics, following emotional pleas by officials from the three sports. History is also on the side of softball, modern pentathlon and baseball, as the IOC has not removed any sports from its Games program since 1936. IOC president Jacques Rogge said the sports were safe for the time being. "We have frozen the program at 28 sports and at 10,500 athletes," Dr Rogge said. "If any sport wants to come in, one will have to go. But no sport will be excluded before 2012."

There's an ongoing debate as to whether cheerleading should be considered a sport. Although some feminists put it in the same category as lap dancing and beauty pageants, cheerleading can be much more than just pretty girls in short skirts on the sidelines of sporting events. I've watched national cheerleading competitions on ESPN and been impressed by the athletic prowess of the participants as they go through complicated 2½-minute routines involving knife-sharp syncopation and daring feats of tumbling. I mention those sports because I long opposed their inclusion in the Olympics: equestrian events because the real athletes in the competition have four legs and aren't awarded the medals; curling because it's basically shuffleboard on ice; and synchronized swimming because its sole raison d'etr e is to emulate 1940s MGM movies starring Esther Williams. Now, though, I support their inclusion, if only as justification for the addition of other sports in Olympics such as skateboarding, surfing and competition cheerleading.
