OLYMPIC HISTORY Jim Thorpe The star of Olympic baseball has been Orestes Kindelan Olivares, of Cuba, a member of the winning 1992 and 1996 teams who in Atlanta established a Games record of nine home runs in nine games. One of those home runs was a 159 metre (521ft) hit that helped to dictate that aluminium bats will not be allowed in Sydney; the hit was the longest home run ever at the Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, home of one of the top US teams. Cuba, despite the introduction of professionals, remains the team to beat, having won every world championship title since 1974. Much, however, will depend on which professionals from the likes of the US and Japan make themselves available to play for their national teams in Sydney.

The (556-foot-high) leaning tower used to retract the roof stood half finished until 1987 when the roof was finally completed. It took another 2 years before the roof, made from 60,696 square feet of Kevlar weighing 50 tons, became retractable. Problems with opening and closing the roof led to its permanent closure. In the spring of 1998, the orange Kevlar roof was removed and a $26 million opaque blue roof replaced it later in the year. The new roof does not open. The stadium’s total cost has exceeded $1 billion. Trivia:
