  • Debut in Athens By Thodoris Georgantas Greek male and female athletes will make their debut in six out of 28 sports included in the Athens Olympic Games program in August 2004. Never before in the Olympic Games history has a Greek athlete took part in the volleyball, in handball and in other sports less popular in Greece, such as baseball, softball, hockey and badminton. In August 2004 in Athens, Greek athletes will compete in sports most of the Greeks are not familiar with, as well as in sports, like volley ball and handball, Greek athletes are proud of great distinctions. But there are also sports where Greece has never been represented at the Olympics. VOLLEYBALL
The President of Greece's Volley Ball Federation (EOPE) and Hellenic Olympic Committee's (HOC) treasurer Thanassis Beligratis was very clear about the participation of national volleyball teams of men and women in the Athens Olympic Games. "We won't participate in the Games just to parade", he said. "The program of our national
volleyball teams' preparation for the 2004 was set up when our country won the Olympic Games organization. We have been working on that and I hope that our teams will manage to star both in the volleyball and in the beach volleyball". Greece's national men's team won a bronze medal at a European championship, while they took the sixth place, the best they had ever achieved, at the World Championship which took place in Athens in 1994. In the beach volleyball, Greece can be proud of a gold medal at a European championship. It is worth mentioning that volleyball was introduced to the Olympic Games in 1964 in Tokyo, while beach volleyball was introduced to the Olympic Games program in 1996 in Atlanta. Greece has already a participation in two Games.

Resolution submitted to Senate Mr. SANTORUM. Mr. President, I rise today to submit a resolution recognizing Jim Thorpe as the Athlete of the Century. Born to an impoverished family on Sac-and-Fox Indian land, Jim Thorpe overcame adverse circumstances to excel as an amateur and as a professional in three sports; track and field, football and baseball. Thorpe, who was voted 'Athlete of the First Half of the Century' by the Associated Press almost fifty years ago, is the only American athlete ever to excel at this level in three major sports. As a student at Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania, Thorpe proved his athletic ability early on. One anecdote recalls how the 5-foot-9 1/2 inch, 144-pound Thorpe almost single-handedly overcame the entire Lafayette track team at a meeting in Easton, Pennsylvania, winning six events. Also while attending the Carlisle Indian School, Jim Thorpe established his amateur football record playing halfback, defender, punter, and place-kicker. In 1911, he was named an All American. In 1912, he represented the United States and the Sac-and-Fox Nation in the Olympic Games in Stockholm, Sweden. To this day, Thorpe is the only athlete to win gold medals in the pentathlon and decathlon. After his Olympic feats in Sweden, Thorpe returned to Carlisle's football team and was named an All-American again.

Since Baron de Coubertin uttered those words in the late 1890's, the world has changed almost beyond recognition. Instead of merely applauding the achievements of others, women now wish to share the spotlight. MILESTONES Women's Sport from 440 BC to 1998 The Women's Olympic Games of the 20's and 30's

ANCIENT ORIGINS CUBA REIGNS AS PROFESSIONALS ENTER THE ALL-AMERICAN GAME Baseball evolved from the English game of rounders, which is not dissimilar to a game played by the Egyptians more than 2,000 years ago. In 1845, a man called Cartwright in the US is believed to have outlined the first set of rules for the game we know today as baseball and from that first official game was played in 1846 between the Knickerbockers and the New York Nine in Hoboken, New Jersey. From that start the game became the most popular sport in the US, ranking alongside swimming as one of the biggest participation sports in the US and a multimillion-pound business. The first professional game was played in 1869 and a US national league formed in 1876. Disputes between leagues led to the formation of the National Commission, which governed the sport from 1903 to 1920 and under whose wing the World Series was born. The game spread to Europe during the Second World War but did not take off as it did in Asia and South America.

October 25, 2002 "This is the first time baseball has been united around the world," said Notari, an Italian whose English is good enough that USA Baseball president Mike Gaski, the head coach at UNC Greensboro, only occasionally had to translate. "One nice letter from MLB and the union, saying in Beijing the best players will be participating, and problem solved," Notari said. "A dream team from America, Japan, Cuba, everyone, will give (NBC Sports president) Dick Ebersol a big TV audience in America. One (Olympic baseball) game on TV with major league players will be more important to help baseball (spread) than any money (MLB) could spend on baseball around the world." Baseball America

Olympic Baseball Stamp On April 3, 1992, the U.S. Postal Service held first day of issue ceremonies in Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium for the release of a new stamp commemorating the addition of baseball as a medal sport in the Summer Olympics. The selection of Atlanta's stadium for release of the stamp was in recognition of the fact that this stadium that would be the venue for baseball competition in the 1996 Summer Olympics. A second reason the Postal Service gave for releasing the stamp in Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium was the fact that the Braves had been in the 1991 World Series, and part of the series was played in this stadium. The ceremony was closed to the public but was broadcast nationwide via satellite. [See photo of unveiling stamp.] Click here to view Olympic Baseball first day of issue cancel. (CBS/AP) Now here's a stunner: The defending champion U.S. baseball team will be at home next summer while countries like the Netherlands and Italy compete for an Olympic medal in Athens.
Manager Frank Robinson and his team of mostly minor leaguers were beaten at their own game, falling to Mexico 2-1 Friday — a loss that eliminated them from a qualifying tournament with no second chances. The Americans were among the favorites to win in Greece. There was even a chance future Hall of Famer Roger Clemens would have pitched for them.
