    Eras of Baseball
Most scholars feel that the history of baseball can be divided into five distinct eras. Each era had its own highs and lows and each era had an influence on the one that came directly after it. Scholars and historians don't always agree, however, on the exact dates of these periods. Here, however, is an approximation of each era.

    • Origins of baseball Part of the History of baseball series. Baseball was not invented in the United States, nor was it invented by Abner Doubleday. Rather, baseball was the product of centuries of evolution and innovations through such games as stoolball, rounders, poison ball and goal ball. The legend of Doubleday’s invention was itself an invention of Al Spalding. Throughout the second half of the 18th century, debates raged over the origins of baseball. To end the arguments and speculation, Spalding’s organized a panel in 1907. The panel consisted of Spalding, two United States Senators (one a former National League president), two other former National League presidents, and two former stars turned sporting goods entrepreneuers (George Wright and Alfred Reach).

The first team to play baseball under modern rules were the Knickerbockers of New York City. The club was founded on September 23, 1845, as a social club for the upper middle classes, and was strictly amateur until its disbandment. USA Baseball has been operating and selecting our National Team since the mid-seventies, and the team first came into full fruition at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Legendary USC & Team USA head coach Rod Dedeaux was instrumental in organizing the first ever Olympic Baseball Tournament, as eight countries participated at Dodger Stadium. Baseball was given "Demonstration Sport" status, and Japan defeated the heavily favored Americans for the Gold Medal. Every summer since then, USA Baseball has held an invitation only trials at their training facility, to select that year's National Team. Approximately 35-45 of the top collegiate players from the country are invited for a 3-4 day process. After a roster has been chosen of 20-22 players, t he team performs on a USA Baseball Red, White and Blue Tour each summer - a schedule of exhibition games all across America versus the world’s top baseball talent.

It's almost impossible to listen to a game on the radio without being reminded of a record set 37 years ago, or a player whose deeds have never been equaled, whose name is remembered long after he's gone. He. Most of the names and deeds and records in baseball have been set by men. It's largely considered a man's game. But what if you take a closer look at that history? The first team of professional baseball players, the Cincinnati Red Stockings, took the field in 1869. They were all male the first boys of summer. The first girls of summer, women who were paid to play baseball competed in their first game in 1875. In the 1870s, an American woman could not vote. She could not own property in her own name after marriage. But she could play ball as well as it could be played in an outfit that weighed as much as 30 pounds and included a floor-length skirt, underskirts, a long-sleeved, high-necked blouse, and high button shoes.
