WBL History of Women's Baseball Ila Borders Retires By Jean Hastings Ardell The announcement of Ila Borders’ retirement came on Friday, June 30, 2000. The late-night sports news made brief mention her 9.35 ERA with the Zion Pioneerzz and showed a clip of her scrambling from the mound to field a slow dribbler toward third and throwing wildly to first. At our house this was unwelcome news – we had followed her career since her pitching debut with the Southern California College Vanguards in 1994. The news seemed especially unwelcome on the eve of the Fourth of July weekend, with its promise of fireworks, barbecues on the beach, and baseball. We were, after all, celebrating Independence Day, and I thought, who better represents the independent thinking that has made this country what it is than Borders? The Path To Pro Borders fell in love with baseball early on; and since the age of ten she had played hardball in what the world persists in viewing as a “man’s” game: from Little League to a men’s semipro league at age 14; through junior high and high school varsity boys’ teams, through four years of men’s college ball, and three full seasons of professional baseball in the unaffiliated Northern League. Recently, after her release from the Madison Black Wolf (Northern League), Borders signed with the Pioneerzz of the Western Baseball League.

New York Lawyer

March 12, 2003 By Joel Chineson
Legal Times A second-year associate has written Beyond the Shadow of the Senators , a history of the Homestead Grays, one of the legendary Negro League teams in the days before Jackie Robinson ended the segregation of the national pastime. As a baseball reporter for The Baltimore Sun from 1994 to 1996, Brad Snyder was privileged to cover the Baltimore Orioles during Cal Ripkin's stretch run to breaking Lou Gehrig's long-standing record for consecutive games played. He also had ample opportunity to match wits in interviews with the owner of the ball club, plaintiffs lawyer Peter Angelos. Snyder says his sparring sessions with Angelos helped him decide to abandon daily journalism for a life in the law. Beyond the Shadow of the Senators , learned recently that the firm stands for more than just hard work. "On [Feb. 10], they had a surprise book signing for me," says a grateful Snyder. "I was really touched." Practically the whole firm turned out, says Snyder, including such firm legends as Brendan Sullivan and David Kendall.

(Atlanta-AP) . Arizona Diamondbacks lefty Randy Johnson is the 17th pitcher to throw a perfect game, doing it against the Atlanta Braves. Johnson finished with 13 strikeouts after fanning the last two hitters in a 2-to-0 win over the Braves.
The 40-year-old Johnson opened the ninth by getting Mark DeRosa

It's the second no-hitter of Johnson's career, and the first

Lewiston, Idaho Milestones in LCSC Baseball History September 8, 1910 - University of Michigan graduate Guy Chiesman jumped a contract with the Detroit Tigers to teach math and coach baseball at the Lewiston State Normal School (LCSC's name from 1945-1983), a two year teachers' college. May 3, 1946 - Coach Merel Stonebraker's North Idaho Teachers' College (now LCSC) Loggers "lambasted" Eastern Oregon College 17-2 at Bengal Field behind the 3-hit, 16-strikeout pitching of Carmen Ulrich. Centerfielder Dwight Church led the Logger hitters with a 4-for-5 effort, including a "devastating" bases loaded home run. May 16, 1947 - In the season's final home game, an enthusiastic crowd (said to be the largest ever to witness an NICE athletic contest) cheered as the Loggers rolled to a 7-0 victory over the league leading Pacific Coast Conference Washington State Cougars behind Del Owens' pitching and the hitting of Rollie McNair, Jim Lambert and Ken Peterson. In the ninth inning, after walking Jud Heathcote, Owens got his 15th strikeout by fanning Bobo Brayton, and umpire Joe Miltenberger signaled game's end. June 2, 1951 -

Since 1966, Amherst teams have won nearly 70% of their games - over 650 victories in all. Since the New England rating poll began in 1980, Amherst has been ranked in the top-three 12 times, and in the top-eight 16 of those 19 seasons. The 1980, '81, '84 and '88 teams were ranked No. 1, and the '82, '95 and '99 clubs were ranked second in New England. Since 1970, The Lord Jeffs have won 21 Little Three Titles.
Since 1973 when the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) began sponsoring postseason New England Tournaments, Amherst has been selected a remarkable 19 times, seeded No. 1 nine times, and hosted the tournament ten times. Amherst has emerged as the ECAC Champion five times. In 1993, the Presidents of the NESCAC schools voted to allow team to participate in NCAA postseason championships. Amherst was selected in four of the six years, but in 1995 couldn't participate due to final exam conflicts.
To maintain a consistently competitive program, the coaching staff is committed to continuously searching for and recruiting top scholar-athletes who seek a rigorous academic education and a top-notch instructional and challenging baseball program. The primary goal of all Amherst student-athletes is to obtain a first-class academic education and Amherst College degree.
