By the 1860s, the sport, unrivaled in popularity, was being described as America's "national pastime." Alexander Joy Cartwright (1820-1892) of New York invented the modern baseball field in 1845. Alexander Cartwright and the members of his New York Knickerbocker Base Ball Club, devised the first rules and regulations for the modern game of baseball. Baseball was based on the English game of rounders. Rounders become popular in the United States in the early 19th century, where the game was called "townball", "base", or "baseball". Cartwright formalized the modern rules of baseball. The first recorded baseball game in 1846 when Alexander Cartwright's Knickerbockers lost to the New York Baseball Club. The game was held at the Elysian Fields, in Hoboken, New Jersey. In 1858, the National Association of Base Ball Players, the first organized baseball league was formed.

John Holway Negro Leagues THE OTHER HALF OF BASEBALL HISTORY
By
John B Holway I've often said that some of the best baseball in America was played between the World Series and Opening Day. These were the many black/white post-season barnstorming games and the winter leagues in Cuba and California. Two new books have now filled in worlds of data from the rich history of the latter two. They are Cuban Baseball by Jorge Figueredo and The California Winter Leagues by William McNeil, both published by McFarland. Before Castro the Cuban League was as strong as the Negro Leagues, because it included the best black players, plus some whites, both Cuban and North American, from the National and American Leagues, all concentrated in only three or four clubs. They lost more than they won. Little Jose Mendez, whose pitching arm was hardened by a childhood of chopping sugar cain, gave the Americans their first shock in 1908, when he threw a one-hitter at the Cincinnati Reds. The only hit was a scratch by the first batter, future Yankee skipper Miller Huggins, a roller to the infield when Mendez himself failed to cover first. The next year the Tigers arrived

FAQ About History
Who invented baseball?
Read our award-winning article on that subject

Who was the first African American to play in the major leagues?
The Walker brothers, Fleet and Welday, played for Toledo of the American Association in 1884. From then on black players were barred from the mainstream major league teams. A few light-skinned Latin players did play in the majors in the 1890-1930 period. In 1947 Jackie Robinson broke the "unwritten" color barrier when he debuted with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Within months Larry Doby (Cleveland) joined him and by the late 1940s and early 1950s most teams had at least one black player. The Boston Red Sox were the last major league team to integrate, in 1959.
Who was the last pitcher legally allowed to throw a spitball in the major leagues?
Burleigh Grimes, the Hall of Fame hurler of the Brooklyn Dodgers, was the last of 17 men who were allowed by baseball to throw the spit ball, in a ruling made in 1920. Those pitchers could throw the pitch the remainder of their careers, and on September 20, 1934, Grimes pitched one inning, striking out the last batter he ever faced - Joe Stripp. The other 17 men allowed to throw the legalized spitter were Doc Ayers, Bill Doak, Phil Douglas, Dana Fillingim, Ray Fisher, Ray Caldwell, Stan Coveleski, Red Faber, Hub Leonard, Jack Quinn, Marv Goodwin, Clarence Mitchell, Dick Rudolph, Allan Russell, Urban Shocker and Allen Sothoron.

Previously unpublished — According to a probably apocryphal legend, American soldiers fighting in the Mexican War play the first baseball game in Mexico , at Jalapa. The wooden leg of defeated general Antonio López de Santa Anna is allegedly used as the bat. — Nemesio Guilló returns home to Cuba after studying at Springhill College in Mobile, Alabama. Among the items he brings back from the United States are a baseball and bat, the first ever seen in Cuba. Havana -born third baseman Esteban Bellán joins the Troy Haymakers, a top semipro team. When the Haymakers become charter members of the National Association two years later, Bellán becomes the first Latin American player in professional baseball. (He may also have been the first Latino major leaguer; however, historians disagree as to whether the NA can be considered a major league.) — Baseball is introduced in Japan by American teacher Horace Wilson. The game catches on in part because many think it embodies the spirit of wa , the willingness to sacrifice oneself for the good of the group.

African-American Baseball History May 2002 Although New Jersey does not have a major league team, its contributions to baseball did not end with the first game in Hoboken. What many would call the most important minor league game in history was played in New Jersey. On April 18, 1946 - almost exactly 100 years after the first official baseball game was played at the Elysian Fields - Jackie Robinson made his professional debut at Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City. Robinson's Montreal Royals beat the Jersey City Giants to mark the beginning of the racial integration of baseball. Robinson belted a three-run homer, hit three singles, stole two bases, and had a total of four runs batted in. A year later, Robinson shattered major league baseball's color line, becoming National League Rookie of the Year as a member of the Brooklyn Dodgers. Prior to baseball's integration, some of the Negro League's best teams and players called New Jersey home. The 1946 Newark Eagles won 75 percent of their games en route to the Negro World Series Championship. Five future

BASEBALL HISTORY COURSE OUTLINE AND RESOURCE GUIDE
Peter L. de Rosa INTRODUCTION This course is designed to study baseball's development within the context of American History. Since sport in America involves widespread political, social, economic, legal, and cultural issues, its study can illuminate numerous national and local historical themes. This outline is a revised and expanded version of one developed for an introductory baseball history course presented at The Boston Center for Adult Education. It can be used as a framework for an independent course on baseball's past, or for a baseball history module in a general sport history class. The course is divided into nine sections. The first seven are arrranged chronologically, reflecting baseball's major eras. Each provides the historical setting, major trends that impacted baseball, important baseball developments, special topics, and local aspects. As can be expected in a course first presented in the heart of Boston Red Sox country, this particular outline has a New England focus, but instructors in other regions can and should substitute topics of local interest. The last two sections cover baseball internationally and in terms of popular culture. The Resource Guide includes a sampling of important baseball history books, periodicals, organizations, and simulations. The one-volume histories by Alexander, Rader, and Voigt make appropriate textbooks for an introductory course. Comments and suggestions are welcome. Email me at

Infielder Brian Traxler played with the Dukes from 1989-94. He holds team records for games played, total bases, and doubles. Dukes manager Terry Collins celebrates winning the PCL Championship in 1987, the sixth of eight PCL titles that the Albuquerque Dukes won. Albuquerque didn't field a pro team again until 1932, when the Albuquerque Dons took first place in the Class-D Arizona-Texas League, compiling a 57-42 record. The Dons' Dick Gyselman led the league in batting average, runs, and hits. The league was disbanded in late July. Albuquerque fielded another Dukes team in 1942, this time in the Class-D West Texas-New Mexico League, where the Dukes went 25-30 before withdrawing in June. With World War II taking place, baseball bats went silent from 1943-45. In 1946, play resumed for the West Texas-New Mexico League, now reclassified as a Class-C League, only to be reclassified again in 1955 to Class-B. Catcher Kevin Kennedy played with the Dukes from 1982-83 and went on to manage the team from 1989-91, winning the PCL Championship in 1990. In 1956 the Dukes started play in the Class-A Western League as a New York Giants affiliate. The team switched in 1958 to become a Cincinnati Reds farm team, but the Western League folded after the 1958 season, leaving Albuquerque without a ball club for the first time in 14 seasons.
