Canada United Kingdom ... France Editorial Review Billy Beane, general manager of MLB's Oakland A's and protagonist of Michael Lewis's Moneyball , had a problem: how to win in the Major Leagues with a budget that's smaller than that of nearly every other team. Conventional wisdom long held that big name, highly athletic hitters and young pitchers with rocket arms were the ticket to success. But Beane and his staff, buoyed by massive amounts of carefully interpreted statistical data, believed that wins could be had by more affordable methods such as hitters with high on-base percentage and pitchers who get lots of ground outs. Given this information and a tight budget, Beane defied tradition and his own scouting department to build winning teams of young affordable players and inexpensive castoff veterans. Lewis was in the room with the A's top management as they spent the summer of 2002 adding and subtracting players and he provides outstanding play-by-play. In the June player draft, Beane acquired nearly every prospect he coveted (few of whom were coveted by other teams) and at the July trading deadline he engaged in a tense battle of nerves to acquire a lefty reliever. Besides being one of the most insider accounts ever written about baseball

Anabolic steroids can have dangerous side effects, including liver damage, heart disease, anxiety and rage.
BALCO founder Victor Conte holds up bottle of one of the drugs he sells, at his office in Burlingame, Calif. BALCO was raided by the Internal Revenue Service and local drug agents in September. (Photo: AP)
(CBS/AP) The newly unmasked steroid causing a furor in athletics is an illegal drug, not a dietary supplement, and poses some serious health risks to people who use it, the Food and Drug Administration warned Tuesday.
U.S. drug authorities first learned about the steroid, called THG, this summer after an anonymous tip. It apparently was designed specifically to be undetectable by the standard test given to athletes.
Europe's fastest man — 100-meter champion Dwain Chambers of Britain — has admitted taking it, and dozens of top Olympic and professional athletes have been subpoenaed to testify before a federal grand jury probing a California lab that sold alleged nutritional supplements. Now armed with a THG test, sports organizations are scrambling to retest athletes and decide what penalties to impose for its use. Anabolic steroids are synthetic versions of the male hormone testosterone. Some are approved by the FDA to sell, by prescription only, to treat certain muscle-wasting diseases. But athletes use them illegally to bulk up.

A message from the Athletic Director John Scarpino
A new season, some new faces, and new opportunities await the men’s and women’s basketball teams this year. Coach Lisa Nuxol begins her second year at the helm of the Lady Raiders after an impressive first year 19-win season. The return of leading scorer Natalie Emmanuelli and leading rebounder Rosanna Davis will be complemented by the addition of Division I transfer Missy Guadagnino and several highly recruited freshmen. Add into the mix freshmen red shirts, Jennifer Anderson and Bryn Mosler, and this year is shaping up to be a very exciting and promising one. Coach Stan Cromartie, in his sixth year as head coach at SCC, has one returning player from last year’s 22-10 team. Sophomore guard Rushawn Johnson will be expected to lead the way on a squad with eleven freshmen. Young and talented, this year’s team is looking forward to the challenges and opportunities that lay ahead. Here at SCC, we take just as much pride in how the student-athletes perform in the classroom and in the community as we do on the court. Last year, 19 student-athletes were named to the Academic All-Conference Team and 14 student-athletes were named to the All-State Academic Team. In addition, each of our athletic teams performed numerous community service projects throughout the year.

310 Stadium Bill Breene is set to begin his fifth season as head coach of the recently resurrected UB baseball program. After almost a 20-year absence, the University at Buffalo reinstated baseball as a varsity sport in November of 1998 and began play as an NCAA Division I independent in 2000. Last season (2003) marked UB's fourth as a member of the Mid-American Conference, a conference nationally recognized for its rich baseball tradition. The return to coaching for Breene signified a career that has come full circle. He began his career in intercollegiate athletics as an assistant baseball coach at his alma mater, the University of Southern Mississippi, where he was a four-year starter for the Golden Eagles. Breene attended USM as both an undergraduate and graduate student, majoring in Health, Physical Education and Recreation and Athletic Administration and Coaching, respectively. "When I was asked if I would be interested in rebuilding our baseball program, I was thrilled," Breene said. "Having been here (UB) throughout the entire athletic upgrade endeavor, I knew that we would be given the support and opportunity to be successful. UB has done that by providing us with a budget to compete, allowing us to travel to regions where we can get games in early March, and continuing efforts to renovate Amherst Audubon Field to a level comparable to other MAC schools. In a short time, we have built a great foundation for the future of the program."
