... Wheldon Gives Honda IRL Win on Home Track SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - A nutritionist charged with distributing illegal drugs to pro athletes told federal agents he gave steroids to track stars Marion Jones and Tim Montgomery in exchange for endorsements, a newspaper reported Saturday night.
The story on the San Francisco Chronicle's Web site, quoting sources who requested anonymity, said Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative founder Victor Conte told the federal investigators that Jones and Montgomery received the performance-enhancing substances in exchange for endorsements of his nutritional supplement. Jones' attorney, Joseph Burton, issued a statement saying the Chronicle's story was wrong. "Victor Conte is either lying or the statement was involuntarily coerced. This is a character assassination of the worst kind," Burton said.

... Detroit Fined For Using Ineligible Players SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The federal agent who spent a late summer afternoon tracking a Chevy Tahoe with license plate "W8 GURU" followed it first to a nutritional supplements lab, and then to a baseball park.
Newly released federal documents claim the driver of that vehicle was Barry Bonds' personal trainer, Greg Anderson, one of four men charged last week in a steroid-distribution ring that allegedly supplied dozens of professional athletes with banned substances.
The documents released Tuesday say a federal agent followed Anderson on Sept. 11, 2002, as he made a quick visit to the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative - the lab allegedly at the center of the steroid ring.
"Anderson returned to his vehicle and proceeded to drive directly, without stopping, to Pacific Bell Park, a professional baseball stadium," the documents say. "Anderson was followed until he entered the players' parking lot area of the professional baseball stadium, past a gate and guarded entrance."
The San Francisco Giants played a home game at Pac Bell Park against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sept. 11, 2002. Bonds went 2-for-4 with an RBI double, but the Giants lost 7-3.

Marion Jones might sue if barred from Olympics 06:21 AM CDT on Monday, May 17, 2004 By KEN STEPHENS / The Dallas Morning News Jones, who won five medals in Sydney in 2000, has never tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug. To this point, a positive test has been the only reason any athlete has been banned from competition. U.S. Olympic officials have raised the possibility that athletes could be banned because of a "non-analytical positive" – other concrete evidence that they had taken or possessed prohibited drugs. But none has suggested that is the case with Jones, or any other specific athlete. "I can tell you this," Jones said. "If I make the Olympic team, which I plan to do, and I am held from the Olympic Games because of something somebody thought, you can pretty much bet there'll be lawsuits. "I'm not going to sit down and let someone or a group of people or an organization take away my livelihood because of a hunch, because of a thought, because somebody is trying to show their power."

http://www.pghsports.com/psr0209/02090101.html
September 2002 Upon Further Review Coaching Resume "Irregularities" Force Closer Look, Locals Not Immune By John E. Sacco Relying on the honesty and integrity of a new coach or athletic administrator is not good enough anymore for universities and colleges across the nation. The embarrassment of finding out that a school's new coach or athletic director isn't what he or she said they were can be overwhelming and bewildering. Within days of being hired as Notre Dame's football coach, George O'Leary admitted he had lied on his resume. He never lettered in football at New Hampshire as he claimed, and he did not earn a master's degree from New York University. The former Georgia Tech coach was disgraced, as was the Fighting Irish's process in hiring him. Tyrone Willingham, who is perceived nationally to be an honorable man who ran a clean and quality program at Stanford was brought in to restore order. Had it not happened at Notre Dame, it is unlikely the matter would have received the national attention it did. But it brought the issue of simple clerical errors, half-truths and long-forgotten lies on resumes to light and within weeks inaccuracies were found in biographical information of coaches in Division I football and basketball across the country.
