University of Florida Success has followed Pat McMahon at every stop he’s made on the coaching carousel. From Old Dominion to Mississippi State to Florida he has built teams that can compete with anyone in the country. Even here at the "Be the Best You Are’’ clinics McMahon, who first appeared in 1982, has put together the most successful staff clinics we’ve ever had, including last year when he had the USA Baseball staff clinic. This year he will once again provide insights into how a total program is put together with the help of two of his assistants at Florida where he took over in 2002 and led the team to the NCAA tournament. He arrived there after serving four years as the head baseball coach at Mississippi State where he led the Bulldogs to a College World Series appearance in 1998, two consecutive NCAA Super Regional berths (2000 and 2001), four straight NCAA Regional berths and compiled a 164-88 overall record. In nine years as a head coach at both Mississippi State (1998-2001) and Old Dominion (1990-94), he has amassed a 353-174 record and .670 winning percentage. Last summer McMahon served as head coach of the USA Baseball National Team for the third time. Joe Kerrigan

310 Stadium Bill Breene is set to begin his fifth season as head coach of the recently resurrected UB baseball program. After almost a 20-year absence, the University at Buffalo reinstated baseball as a varsity sport in November of 1998 and began play as an NCAA Division I independent in 2000. Last season (2003) marked UB's fourth as a member of the Mid-American Conference, a conference nationally recognized for its rich baseball tradition. The return to coaching for Breene signified a career that has come full circle. He began his career in intercollegiate athletics as an assistant baseball coach at his alma mater, the University of Southern Mississippi, where he was a four-year starter for the Golden Eagles. Breene attended USM as both an undergraduate and graduate student, majoring in Health, Physical Education and Recreation and Athletic Administration and Coaching, respectively. "When I was asked if I would be interested in rebuilding our baseball program, I was thrilled," Breene said. "Having been here (UB) throughout the entire athletic upgrade endeavor, I knew that we would be given the support and opportunity to be successful. UB has done that by providing us with a budget to compete, allowing us to travel to regions where we can get games in early March, and continuing efforts to renovate Amherst Audubon Field to a level comparable to other MAC schools. In a short time, we have built a great foundation for the future of the program."

The following year, the Eagles began intercollegiate play and their effort was the finest ever by a first-year program in the National Junior College Athletic Association. Peaking at number three nationally, TCC became the first school in NJCAA history to achieve a national ranking in its first season. That same year, Gillespie's Eagles also earned an unprecedented number one ranking among Florida community colleges.
Gillespie, who also served as Athletic Director from 1994-2001, won at least 21 games each season on his way to a career record of 258-56. The Eagles made their first of six post-season appearances in 1994, advancing to the Florida Community College Activities Association State Tournament as Panhandle Conference runners-up. In 1996, Gillespie led TCC to its first Panhandle Conference Championship, becoming the first team to go through the conference schedule undefeated.
The highlight of his TCC career came a year later when the Eagles won their second straight conference title, as well as their first state championship. The 35-2 Eagles finished third in the NJCAA National Tournament.

Scoring
Each baseball game has nine innings, with three "outs" per side in each inning. Three strikes equal an out and four "balls" (pitches outside the strike zone that are not swung at by the batter) result in a walk. Teams score a run when a batter safely reaches all four bases.

TODD SMITH DIRECTOR OF ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE tsmith2@pacific.edu Coach Smith is in his third year as Director of Athletic Performance. Coach Smith was the Assistant Director of Athletic Performance at Pacific before heading to San Jose State University for a short stint. With Smith back in Stockton the Athletic Performance Center has been revamped. The weight room was upgraded to 10 Weightlifting Platforms built into the floor, 10 Squat Racks, 10 Bench Presses (9 adjustable Incline Benches), 6 adjustable Plyometric Boxes, 80 Olympic Weightlifting Bumper Plates, 10 Olympic Weightlifting bars, and 5 Ultra-light bars. "Our Athletic Director, Lynn King, understands the importance of Strength and Conditioning and has shown his support by helping to upgrade the facilities and equipment each year," said Smith. The Conditioning Room contains the 1,500 sq/ft Swain SportsMat floor which decreases impact forces, is used during plyometric workouts, core strengthening and agility activities. In addition to the floor the conditioning room now houses 15 Schwinn Spin Bikes for low impact team conditioning. Injured athletes can now wheel a spin bike from the conditioning room and take it to practice to mainatin fitness levels when not able to run. This year's focus has been the purchasing of 5 Tendo Sports Powerlyzers. These units measure the speed and powerout of the athletes' movements. The athletes will now have a quantified measure of how fast they move during an exercise. The athletes see the power output measured in watts or the velocity measured in meters per second, and they can try to beat that number every rep. Each repetition's velocity and powerout is measured and can be recorded.

More and more children are concentrating on just one sport at an early age. And that can have serious physical consequences.
(CBS)
Each year, nearly 5 million American youngsters play baseball or softball. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, between 2 and 8 percent of these children are injured.
Anthony Pierro, 11, of Fort Lee, N.J., wishes he was whizzing fastballs over home plate. But a shoulder injury has sidelined him from his favorite position, reports The Saturday Early Show.
"I was on the mound and just one sudden pitch, I felt my arm hurt, and I said to my coach, 'My arm hurts and I don't want to throw.'" Anthony recalls.
An X-ray revealed Anthony had a widened growth plate in his shoulder. Known as "Little League shoulder," the condition is most common among pitchers and other positions that require frequent and forceful throwing. No one was caught more off guard by the diagnosis than Anthony's dad, Albert, who is also his coach. He thought they were doing everything right. Says he, "We always warmed up and did the stretches so it came as a very big surprise."
