John D. Rockefeller in many ways symbolizes all the contradictions of the good and the bad of modern industrialization. He created the modern oil industry and on the way became the richest man in the world. He is remembered for devious cutthroat business practices that always aimed at eliminating the competition. He is, however, also known as a philanthropist who gave away most of his fortune, accomplishing such goals as creating the University of Chicago, and eradicating hookworm in the American South. At the age of 24, in 1865, Rockefeller began building what would become the Standard Oil Company. He devised a systematic plan to dominate the industry and by the turn of the century he controlled 90% of the oil refining and transporting business in the U.S. He realized tremendous profits by focusing on the details. To avoid prosecution under anti-monopoly laws, Rockefeller also pioneered such forms of business organization as trusts and holding companies. Damian Bowerman is an MFA student of acting at the Ohio State University.

He founded the Darrell Green Youth Life Foundation (DGYLF) in 1988 to create doorways of opportunity for children living in insecure environments. This mission is accomplished through community-based and values-driven learning centers operating in select urban, suburban, and rural neighborhoods throughout America.

Three national veterans' athletics meetings have been scheduled ahead of the competition. Elizabeth Mosima, Cameroon Tribune (Yaoundé)

In less than three months, Yaounde will host the Fifth edition of the African Masters Athletics championship. The competition which will be the first ever to be hosted in the country will bring together some 37 countries in Africa. Ahead of this great event, preparations are afoot in the country to ensure a smooth competition. The first preparatory meeting for the competition took place last Wednesday in Yaounde. Present at the meeting was the President of the African Masters Athletics Federation, Booysen Hannes (South Africa), the technical director, Booysen Hans (Namibia) and members of the Cameroon Masters Athletics Federation. Speaking during the meeting, the President of the African Masters Athletics, Booysen Hannes, expressed satisfaction after an inspection mission of sports infrastructure in the country. The technical director, Booysen Hans congratulated the members of the Cameroon Masters Athletics Federation for a job well done. He said, what is needed is the technical assistance that they will give to make the competition a success. Organizers discussed various ways of making the event not only a success but also popular. Among the different proposals made by the visitors was the organization of three national veterans' athletics meetings in the country before the African championship. The meetings will take place in Douala, Bafoussam and Yaounde.

Encouraging Precedence: 12/9
By David Pelfrey Archives

Professional sports are currently going through a transition (much like professional wrestling did in the 90’s) where it is good to be bad. Recently, it has become marketable for professional athletes to have a bad attitude and go against the grain. Controversy creates publicity, which generates revenue for all parties involved. Often this profitability grants the troublemaking superstars immunity to the consequences of their actions.
Anyone who follows the NFL or professional sports in general should be well aware of the recent situation with Keyshawn Johnson and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. To summarize, Keyshawn (known by his teammates as Me-shawn) was de-activated by the team as a result of a myriad of actions that have become commonplace throughout the career of this highly talented wide receiver. Among those actions were missing team meetings, missing workouts, and declaring directly to coach John Gruden during the season his preference to play elsewhere the following year, basically putting his own needs and wants ahead of those of the team. Well, he got his wish, just a little sooner than expected. In an unprecedented move and one that I hope encourages other teams to do the same, Gruden and GM Rich McKay basically fired Johnson from his job as their starting wide receiver and resident troublemaker.

Baseball
Often referred to as America's national pastime, baseball made its debut as an official Olympic sport on July 26, 1992, in Barcelona, Spain. Before 1992, baseball had often been seen in various exhibition and demonstration games throughout modern Olympic history. In time, baseball became so popular that it was scheduled to become an official sport at the 1940 Olympic Games in Japan. However, due to World War II, the Games were canceled and baseball was overlooked as an official Olympic sport for the next 52 years. The Olympic Committee formally decided baseball would be an official sport in 1992.

Scoring
Each baseball game has nine innings, with three "outs" per side in each inning. Three strikes equal an out and four "balls" (pitches outside the strike zone that are not swung at by the batter) result in a walk. Teams score a run when a batter safely reaches all four bases.
