Visser, Thomas Durant A generously illustrated handbook for identifying and understanding structures that symbolize the region's unique cultural and historical landscape.
The quintessential New England barn photogenic, full of character, and framed by flaming autumn foliage is an endangered species. Of some 30,000 barns in Vermont alone, nearly a thousand a year are lost to fire, collapse, or bulldozers. Thomas Durant Visser's field guide to the barns, silos, sugar houses, granaries, tobacco barns, and potato houses of New England is an attempt to document not just their structure but their traditions and innovations before the surviving architectural evidence of this rich rural heritage is lost forever.
A recognized authority on historic barn preservation, Visser has combed the six-state region for representative barns and outbuildings, and 200 of his photographs are reproduced here. The text, which includes accounts from 18th- and 19th-century observers, describes key architectural characteristics, historic uses, and geographic distribution as well as specific features like timbers and frames, sheathings, doors, and cupolas. From English barns to bank barns, from ice houses to outhouses, these irreplaceable assets, Visser writes, "linger as vulnerable survivors of the past. Yet before these buildings vanish, each has a story to tell." Travelers, residents, and scholars alike will find Visser's text invaluable in uncovering, understanding, and appreciating the stories inherent in these dwindling cultural artifacts.

Old Barn Owner
Having just purchased an old barn, I found precious few resources to assist in gleaning a history. Visser's book was concise, informative, and a pleasure to read. It provides valuable insight to the development of agricultural styles, and valuable clues to dating the agrarian landscape. Excellent source.
Excellent as a reference work or as a handy field guide.

Fantastic Book on Barns!
For what I wanted the book for it is a fantastic resourse. I build model barns and covered bridges. This book has not only given me new ideas but also a history behind them. Love the book.
Frustratingly brief presentation
While the book presents numerous types of agricultural buildings from all over the U.S., it doesn't go into any sort of detail about any of them, making it of limited reference use.

Barns and Redundant Farm Buildings
With changes in farming practices, and in economic conditions. many traditional farm buildings have become redundant. They can be in timber-frame, stone or brick and in many forms and sizes, from single barns to complete farm layouts. Recent amateur conversions have caused the introduction of very restrictive Planning legislation. Nevertheless, it is still possible to devise practical and imaginative conversion schemes on which to negotiate approvals. Apart from legislative constraints, old buildings often have a unique personality which can be adapted to form new character. Care and ingenuity can make use of many existing features and often retain most of the existing openings. Walls and roofs can be lined to give good standards of insulation, and as many modern amenities can he introduced as may he wanted. The cost of conversion is less than building new, and there is the opportunity to create something new yet old. individual and special. Various design guides have been published, but there is no substitute for a real Architect working on an actual building, devising real and appropriate solutions in collaboration with a caring owner.

Traditional barns and farm buildings in Calderdale: Developing for new uses
Introduction
Most people will be concerned with the conversion of barns but the principles set out here also apply to other farm buildings such as cart sheds, pigsties, mistals and stables. The shape, materials, function and location of farm buildings vary from region to region throughout the country. From them we can get information on local architectural styles and craftsmanship, regional and local economies, patterns of settlement and their changes through time. Their presence is far more than a visual amenity, important though this role is; they are also original evidence presenting us with historical information not otherwise available, which deserves to be retained. Traditionally constructed farm buildings are part of Calderdale's heritage. They contribute to the architectural and historic character of the District and to its landscape quality. More than 360 barns in Calderdale are listed by the Government and the Council has a duty to operate a sensitive approach to conversion.

Regeneration in Calderdale
Traditional barns and farm buildings in Calderdale: Developing for new uses
Good Practices
Any application for conversion needs to be fully justified. First of all the building, or that part to be converted, should be shown to be redundant. Another factor is whether it is near or within a settlement or out in the fields where changes to a building can affect the wider landscapes. Farm buildings in Calderdale are typically solid, simple buildings, built from local stone, with stone slate roofs. In order to retain their architectural quality it is important that, if a new use has to be found, they still continue to look like farm buildings in order to retain links between their past and the future. Conversion of farm buildings is therefore most acceptable where the new use respects the original envelope and interior volume of the building. Often it is only by being prepared to accept less conventional accommodation layouts that farm buildings can be converted without changing their character. New schemes should also aim to meet practical requirements of drainage, heating and lighting in the most sympathetic way.

The Blair ventilated pit latrine is very popular because: it does not smell, it does not attract flies, it is safe to use, it is very private, it costs little to build, it can be used as a private bathing place, it is easy to maintain. This incredible tidbit was intended for use in 3 rd BUILDING A BLAIR DOUBLE PIT TOILET (Text only, at bottom of page), and SanPlat/VIP The ‘Arborloo’ This manual describes a different approach, but one that has the same aim - that of disposing and recycling human waste formed in a latrine. In this case the latrine itself is moved and the pit contents remain in place - the pit becoming a hole for planting a tree. Wood ash and soil are added regularly to reduce fly breeding and odour and leaves and kitchen wastes are also added to assist in the breakdown of the materials to form a humus material suitable for planting. The latrine is used until the pit is about two thirds full. Then the latrine structure is moved and the pit topped up with well- composted soil. The young tree is then planted within the hole and watered and allowed to grow and mature. The most suitable trees for this are paw paw, guava, mango, avocado and mulberry - with the “passion fruit” - granadilla also growing well in such conditions. Orange, naartjie, “neem” and

The landscape was as important in defining the physical character of the Amana Colonies as the distinctive and simple building style. The dominant character of the landscape has always been agriculture. Dependent on agriculture for their existence, the Amana Colony Inspirationists chose their Iowa site for its fertile soil as well as its sources of water and building supplies. The seven Amana villages were organized as agricultural villages. Indeed, Article III of the Amana Society, written soon after they arrived in Iowa, stated "Agriculture and the raising of cattle and other domestic animals, in connection with some manufacturing and trades, shall under the blessing of God form the means of sustenance for this Society." High Amana Farm Complex
Photograph by Shannon Bell Dominating the landscape of the Amana Colonies, the farm complex sat clustered at the edge of each village. High Amana, like the other Amana villages, was equipped with a complete farm complex, allowing the village to be nearly self-sufficient. Each farm complex consisted of several barns. Essential to each village were an Ochsenstall (ox barn), Gaustall (horse barn), Füllerstall (colt barn), Kuhstall (cow barn), and a Saustall (hog barn). A variety of shapes and massing exist among the Amana Colony barns due to the addition of lean-tos and other structures which were added to the original barns to accommodate the growing needs of the community. Completing the farm complex were machine sheds, corn cribs, buggy sheds, granaries, and other farm buildings.
