The overlapping identities forged by colonization, migration, and ethnic pluralism have been shaped profoundly by Atlantic connections. European settlers constructed plantation societies built on enslaved African labor. Migration and cultural exchange created new and rich amalgams out of distinct source cultures. The South Atlantic states developed their "Southern" identity from the searing experience of the Civil War that transformed a region based on agricultural wealth and ownership of human capital into a region of poverty. The states in this region experienced wrenching transformations through Civil War, Reconstruction and the idea of a "New South" that was realized only after the modernizing impact of World War II.
The inclusion of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands in our region opens a window into the crucial connections linking the Caribbean to the U.S. South. A passionate engagement with a disputed past has generated powerful expressions of identity through preservation, literature, and the arts.
A Charleston South Atlantic Regional Humanities Center will focus on an interdisciplinary exploration of this contested history and its legacies in a region of contrasts.

< BACK TO HISTORY CONTENTS THE COMMONWEALTH CARIBBEAN is the term applied to the English- speaking islands in the Carribbean and the mainland nations of Belize (formerly British Honduras) and Guyana (formerly British Guiana) that once constituted the Caribbean portion of the British Empire. This volume examines only the islands of the Commonwealth Caribbean, which are Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, the Windward Islands (Dominica, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Grenada), Barbados, the Leeward Islands (Antigua and Barbuda, St. Christopher [hereafter, St. Kitts] and Nevis, the British Virgin Islands, Anguilla, and Montserrat), and the so-called Northern Islands (the Bahamas, the Cayman Islands, and the Turks and Caicos Islands). To the casual observer, these islands might appear to be too disparate to allow for a common discussion. Consider, for instance, the differences in population, size, income, ethnic composition, and political status among the various islands. Anguilla's 7,000 residents live on an island totaling 91 square kilometers, whereas Jamaica has a population of 2.3 million and a territory of nearly 11,000 square kilometers. The per capita gross domestic product (GDPsee Glossary) of the Cayman Islands is nearly fourteen times as large as that of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Trinidad and Tobago's population is evenly divided between blacks and East Indians, a pattern quite different from that on the other islands, on which blacks constitute an overwhelming majority. Although most of the islands are independent nations, five (the British Virgin Islands, Anguilla, Montserrat, the Cayman Islands, and the Turks and Caicos Islands) remain British dependencies.

    History
In the 1960s at a time when the impact of development activities on Caribbean environments was beginning to be visible, intrusive and troublesome, a number of groups and individuals concerned with the conservation of the region's natural resources and cultural heritage, conceived the idea for the formation of a conservation group for the Caribbean region. With support from Laurence Rockefeller, who in the 1950's had purchased two-thirds of St. John (to the US Virgin Islands) and donated it for establishment of a National Park, a regional survey on conservation problems was carried out by Dr Carl Carlozzi of the University of Massachusetts. One of the first organizations to take concrete action to address on a regional basis the environmental problems brought by development, was the research wing of the then College of the Virgin Islands the Caribbean Research Institute. Established in October 1965, one of the CRI's first significant projects was the joint sponsorship of the Eastern Caribbean Conservation Conference on St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands along with the American Conservation Association, headed by Mr Rockefeller, and the Government of the U.S.V.I. The conference focused on the Carlozzi findings and was titled "Conservation in the Eastern Caribbean." It generated a sequence of activities throughout the region relating to conservation programmes and environmental activities. Particularly it recognized the need for international planning and cooperation in meeting the conservation requirements of the region and concluded its deliberations by recommending the establishment of a regional body to help meet these needs.

THE BARBADOS RIFLE AND PISTOL FEDERATION INC.
During 1909, Captain E. Wright, Staff Officer of the Barbados Volunteer Force, a Shooting Enthusiast, sponsored the formation of "The Barbados Miniature Rifle Club" , which was the first affiliate to the Barbados Rifle Association - founded in 1904. There was nothing miniature about the riles as these were Long Martini action service rifles, to carry the .22 ammunition. These clubs had been springing up all over the United kingdom and Empire with the help and encouragement of Governments concerned. The real sponsor was Lord Roberts, the Boer War hero, who saw them as a means of training civilians in the use of the rifle. Little did anyone then envisage the spectacular growth of small bore rifle shooting as an International Sport, involving millions of participants. Captain Wright and members of the Barbados Rifle Association, constructed a .22 Range having one long firing point and butts at 25, 50 and 100-yards. The butts were situated beneath the cliff by the West India Barracks and occupied the area which now as the first of the large storage tanks of the Barbados Union Oil Company in 1919-1920. This Club flourished with a large membership which included a larger proportion of women. In 1954 a Pistol section was added to the Club, and Barbados sent their first overseas competitors to the Commonwealth Games in Jamaica, in 1966, Only three months prior to these games a 50-metre range was constructed at Drill Hall to enable our competitors to practice the "

Barbados, the most successful team in the Caribbean with 18 regional first class titles since 1966, added the CaribBeer International Challenge four-day title to the Red Stripe Bowl one-day, the Carib Beer series regional first class title and the regional under-19 three-day title their junior team won in Jamaica.
Trinidad and Tobago (U-15) and Windward Islands (U-19 one-day) hold the only other West Indies titles.
It was the second consecutive victory for Barbados against Jamaica in a senior final following their victory in the Red Stripe Bowl final in Jamaica last September.
Resuming the final day on 166-3 needing to make another 19 runs to avoid an innings defeat, Jamaica were quickly dismissed for 219 leaving the Courtney Browne led Barbados side to get 35 to win in two sessions and 16 minutes.

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC - With captain Courtney Browne labelling his side the "best in the Caribbean", Cup champions Barbados created history yesterday after crushing Jamaica by seven wickets in the final of the Carib Beer International Challenge to become the first to capture both titles in a West Indies first-class cricket season.
Set just 35 for victory following another sensational batting collapse by Jamaica, Browne's ruthless combination of experience and youth triumphed in 7.1 overs 20 minutes after lunch on the fourth and final day at Kensington Oval.
Ryan Hinds was unbeaten on 21 as the winning runs came from three leg byes to fine-leg with occasional bowler Brenton Parchment in operation.
Ecstatic spectators, one displaying a huge Barbados flag of ultra marine and gold with the broken trident, soon assembled in front of the Sir Garfield Sobers Pavilion for the presentation ceremony as Kurt Wilkinson, the 21-year-old Barbados batsman was named man-of-the-match for his second first-class century (125) in the Barbados first innings total of 369.
Starting the day on 166 for three in their second innings, still needing 19 more runs to avoid an innings defeat, Jamaica scored freely in the first 25 minutes before losing their last seven wickets for 32 runs in 18 overs as they were fired out by a four-pronged pace attack, for 219.

RBC Royal Bank of Canada's history in the Caribbean goes back a long way. In fact, the bank established branches in the Caribbean before some of Canada's western provinces. Strong maritime roots influenced its representation throughout the West Indies and the Caribbean. Its commercial relations with the West Indies began with a group of merchants from Halifax, Nova Scotia, who formed the Merchant's Bank in 1864, and were engaged in the thriving sea-going trade between Halifax and the West Indies. In those days Canadian southbound ships carried mainly flour, codfish and timber, returning north with their cargoes of sugar, rum, cotton and spices. Through branches established in all major trade centres in the Caribbean, RBC offered valuable facilities for promoting trade. Early days
The bank's first venture south was Bermuda in 1882 followed by Cuba in 1899. By 1914, the bank's international network included Puerto Rico, Bahamas, Trinidad, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Barbados, British Honduras (now Belize) and Grenada. In that same year, RBC purchased the British Guiana Bank that had opened in 1836. By 1984 the bank had opened a total of 15 branches in Guyana (formerly British Guiana) and in November 1984 RBC ceased to operate in Guyana. The Bio-diversity Centre in Georgetown, created to study Guyana's largely intact rain forest, was built with funds from RBC's operations in Guyana, since it was impossible to take them out of the country due to foreign exchange restrictions.

On the way back to Sion Hill, by way of Rock Hall Hill, they conceived the idea that Barbados had some prime rally country, and it could be quite possible to organise a rally. Later that night over drinks at Sion Hill, David and Maurice were joined by Bill Mallalieu and Sam Ward and discussion of a rally became serious. Early in 1957, a group of 12 met at the Hotel Royal and began serious planning. The 12 were: Maurice Hutt History Teacher - Harrison's College. Part time Ornithologist Hazel Hutt Housewife David Massiah Engineer Builders Ltd. Wilfred Massiah Teacher - Lodge School Sam Ward Planter, Manager - River Plantation Bill Mallalieu Estate Agent Dennis Bannister Manager - ABC Motors David McKenzie Manager - McEnearneys Frank Hutchinson Chelsea Garage Graham Wilkes Teacher - Lodge School. Later Founder and Principal of Mapps College Geoffrey Manning Planter - Golden Grove Fred Mallalieu Banker - Barclays Banks Eventually the rally was held over 110 miles, starting at Applewaites factory and finishing at Vaucluse. It was highly successful. It must be noted that there were no cell phones or communication of any kind. Every detail of the rally had to be planned in advance and timed to the second. The calculation of the results was a major undertaking.
