Island Geography Barbados lies just east of the Caribbean island chain some 1 600 miles southeast of Miami, Florida. Relatively flat compared to its volcanic neighbours, it is one of the few coral-capped islands in the region. While Barbados lacks that peaked volcanic landscape common to nearby islands, it well makes up for it with its distinctive blend of the bustling cosmopolitan texture of Bridgetown and the gentle, back-in-time countryside of soft rolling hills and meandering roads. Miles of sugarcane fields sway lightly in the breeze interrupted only by rows of colourfully quaint chattel houses. The highest point is 1 100 foot Mount Hillaby, located near the centre of the island and just west of the breathtaking Scotland district. This dramatically rugged area comprises about one sixth of the island and meets the Atlantic in the northeast of the island. This is a clay area with jutting rocky spikes and ridges, and of course, breathtaking views. Back in Bridgetown, modern edifices loom side by side the length of the main drag, Broad Street. Here and on the secondary Swan Street, shoppers bustle along, zig-zagging between the steady flow of vehicles. Barbados also has outlying urban centres. In the south, the principle 'town' is Oistins, a busy little fishing village with a number of modern stores. Moving northwards along the west coast is first Holetown, which has a number of shopping centres, eateries and other facilities.

    THE BARBADOS MUSEUM
The Barbados Museum, once a military prison, is one of several buildings that make up the historic Garrison area. Built between 1817 and 1818, the prison was leased to the Barbados Museum and Historical Society in 1933.
From the building's own structure to its many galleries, each displaying an element of old Barbados, the Museum is a fascinating visit. The Museum also hosts visiting exhibits of modern art among other temporary displays.

Most of the island is made up of soft marine deposits of coral limestone. This limestone cover gives way in the north-eastern part of the island to a terrain of clays and sandstones comprising the Scotland marine sedimentary formation. This area runs through the parishes of St. Joseph, St. John and St. Andrew and embraces about one-sixth of the island. Barbados has been described as flat and low lying, but in fact, it rises from west to east in a series of gentle terraces to its highest point of about 1100ft at Mount Hillaby in St. Andrew. The terrain dips in St. George to form the St. George Valley, separating the main limestone terraces from a lower limestone ridge in the Christ Church area. Temperature and Rainfall
Barbados enjoys a stable climate. The temperature rarely falls below 23°C or rises above 30°C. There is a definite "wet season" from July to November and a "dry season" with minimum rainfall recorded in February and March. Population
At the end of 2000 residential population stood at 267,900 with birth rate per thousand being 14.0 and population growth rate 0.2.

    19. BARBADOS GEOGRAPHY
Barbados Land of sugar cane, rum and beautiful beaches. General We are different. Barbados has everything you could want in a beach.
    http://www.caribnet.net/geo.html
    Barbados:
Land of sugar cane, rum and beautiful beaches. General:

We are different. The furthest east of the islands, we always kind of stick out. But seriously, Barbados is the easternmost of the Caribbean islands, situated at Longitude 13.2 North, and Latitude 59.4 East. Offering just about perfect, if sometimes too hot, weather all year round - over hours of sunshine a year! Divided into eleven parishes, Barbados also offers a myriad of geographical experiences, from the rolling hills and rough seas of the East coast to the flat, calm and somewhat lucid West coast.
    Climate:
    We've got a perfect climate!
Being a tropical paradise the weather is just about the same all year round: perfect . Our average temperature is between 24 and 30 degrees Celsius, and we get just enough rain to keep the island looking green and beautiful. February and March are traditionally our driest months Rainfall is more frequent in the Wet Season (June to October) when afternoon showers are more common. This rainfall occasionally helps to keep the partiers cool as they jump up on Kadooment day
    Beaches:
Beaches are what we are known for, and there is a good reason for that! Barbados has everything you could want in a beach. From the East Coast where swimming is not recommended and the International Surfing and Wind Surfing Competitions are held, to the golden West Coast, with its almost lake-like waters and dazzling sunsets. The water is always warm, and whether you want to watch the marine wildlife in action or just get wet and have fun we've got the place for you! There are about seven ships sunk at various places around the island, offering spectacular diving sites. Most of the ships were sunk on the West Coast, though two are on the South. For those less inclined to diving and getting wet Glass Bottom Boats and the Atlantic Submarine and Sea-Trek offer different ways to view the underwater splendor.
