B arbados is the easternmost of the Caribbean islands. It is a beautiful, majestic land, as well as the site of 1997's Summer Abroad in the Caribbean program. Headed by Tulane's Dr. John H. Patton, the program encourages all students, regardless of their current course of study, to immerse themselves in the beauty of a culture that bears but vague similarities to our own. The program has been in effect since 1988 and has since enlightened many students hoping to find out a little bit more about the world and what it means to be an American by removing the shield of a familiar American culture. This program is titled "Communication and Culture" and has been alternately held in Aruba and Barbados. It is conducted in conjunction with the University of the West Indies in Barbados, and Tulane students are housed on their campus. In 1995, Pamela Broom made her first trip abroad as one such student. She made her decision while studying humanities as a full-time University College senior with three little girls. She saw the flier and, after a brief vacillation, inquired into the logistics of studying a unique culture in the West Indies. The culture she found was one shaped in part by the political history of the area. Barbados was formerly a British colony and is now a member of the British Commonwealth. It has since adopted a few of the amenities of Western society, such as grocery facilities, but continues to draw cultural richness from the deep African traditions and heritage celebrated by the majority of the inhabitants.

Nicole Lyte, winner of the Caribbean Queen Pageant Barbados triumphed last Friday as Nicole Lyte was crowned the 2003 Caribbean Queen at the Caribbean Student Association's (C.S.A.) 22nd Annual Culture Night. Around 300 students and faculty members filled the Mandela Room, decked out in banquet-like fashion that provided a rich exuberance to such a celebratory atmosphere. Balloons in red, green, yellow and black adequately complemented the banner displayed above the stage, reading "Unity, Resistance, Strength," a prominent theme throughout the evening. "Barbados finally has a name on this campus," said Lyte, a sophomore accounting major. "We're so small in number here. At least for a year, people have to know where Barbados is." "The most striking thing to mention about Barbados is that we are geographically the most easterly of all the islands of the Caribbean," said Lyte in her introduction. "So in our own special way, we are closest to Africa."

Crop Over Photo Gallery Crop Over Calendar Other Events ... Discover Barbados Crop Over, a five-week summer festival, is Barbados' most popular and colourful festival. It's origins can be traced back to the 1780's, a time when Barbados was the world's largest producer of sugar. At the end of the sugar season, there was always a huge celebration to mark the culmination of another successful sugar cane harvest - the Crop Over celebration. As the sugar industry in Barbados declined, so too did the Crop Over festival and in the 1940's the festival was terminated completely. However, the festival was revived in 1974 and other elements of Barbadian culture were infused to make the extravaganza that exists today ..... an event that attracts thousands of people from across the globe.
  • The festival begins with the Ceremonial Delivery of the Last Canes and the crowning of the King and Queen of the Festival - the most productive male and female cane cutters of the season.

Barbados Cherry
Malpighia punicifolia L.
Malpighia glabra Millsp.

The Barbados cherry, a member of the Malpighiaceae, is an interesting example of a fruit that rose, like Cinderella, from relative obscurity about 40 years ago. It was at that time the subject of much taxonomic confusion, having been described and discussed previously under the binomial Malpighia glabra L., which properly belongs to a wild relative inhabiting the West Indies, tropical America and the lowlands of Mexico to southern Texas, and having smaller, pointed leaves, smaller flowers in peduncled umbels, styles nearly equal, and smaller fruits. M. Punicifolia L. ( M. glabra Millsp. NOT Linn.) has been generally approved as the correct botanical name for the Barbados cherry, which is also called West Indian cherry, native cherry, garden cherry, French cherry; in Spanish, acerola, cereza, cereza colorada, cereza de la sabana, or grosella; in French, cerisier, cerise de St. Domingue; in Portuguese
