FAQ
... Restaurants Barbados has been referred to as, in the 19th century, "the sanitorium of the West Indies, where scores of British elite flocked for the climate. More recently, and more cynically, Barbados has been called "the Florida of the West Indies, albeit with a distinctly Caribbean and British accent." Settled by the British in 1627, Barbados avoided much of the strife and conflicts of the region chiefly because of its location, 90 miles east of the West Indies 'chain'. Barbados is home to the oldest Parliament in the western hemisphere, established over 350 years ago. Because it was never invaded and enjoyed continuous British influence since its colonization, Barbados remains a bastion of old-world charm and historical significance. Over 400,000 visitors each year find miles of pink and white sand beaches; a highly developed tourism industry offering some of the finest hotels in the Caribbean; fine restaurants; and swimming, sunning and a plethora of water sports, both above and below the surface

Winning culture evolving in Barbados' cricket
by Philip Hackett
Philip Hackett Tuesday, March 30, 2004 Barbados continued to dominate regional cricket as they won both first class titles for the second consecutive year with a comprehensive 84 run victory over Jamaica at the North Stars ground towards the northern tip of the island last Sunday. The recovery launched by Barbados after Jamaica had the better of the exchanges for most of the first three days, was led by middle order batsman Floyd Reifer and West Indies pacer Corey Collymore.

Damian Greaves left the island yesterday for Barbados to attend the tenth meeting of the forum of Ministers of Culture of Latin America and the Caribbean.
The forum of ministers of culture and officials responsible for culture policy is an institutionalized body established for the purpose of working towards the cultural cooperation and cultural integration of the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean.
The policy is meant to promote, mobilize and consolidate the resources of the member states for the cultural integration of the region. One of the principal strategies for achieving those goals is the breaking down of the language barriers.
At the meeting, Caribbean ministers of culture will look at the future of the forum with a view to concretizing its role, function and structure. The meeting will also analyze Caribbean cultural policy issues.
While in Barbados, the minister will engage in exploratory discussions towards the restructuring of the culture department and cultural programmes in St. Lucia.

Educational Curriculum and Instruction
Program:

This course introduces students to the culture and educational system of Barbados and the Caribbean. Barbados is known worldwide for its highly successful school system. Students will have the opportunity to visit a variety of educational institutions (i.e., primary and secondary schools, private schools, Erdiston's Teachers' College, UWI, etc.) Students are encouraged to request specific placements before departure.
Students will also visit sites of historical and cultural interest. Through both tours and lectures students will learn about the region's history and unique geographical features. Additionally they will discover the rich artistic, musical and religious traditions found throughout Caribbean.
Barbados is a valuable site of instruction because of its rich cultural legacy, long historical relationship with the United States and excellent public school system. Barbados itself is over three hundred years old. A British colony until its independence in 1966, its British roots are still evident in many of its educational, cultural, and legal systems. The country's rich heritage is also strongly influenced by the Caribbean and Africa. It has a stable democratic government and a literacy rate of more than 95%.
