Crafts Art Galleries Artists Museums ... Music Island Culture Barbados' distinction of having remained under British rule from its first settlement in 1627 to its Independence on November 30, 1966, profoundly affected the culture. Because of this unbroken dominion, the stoic British influence courses through every day life and the infrastructure of the island. Yet the more flamboyant African sway pervades local life as well, and the blend of the two makes for an unmatched cultural disposition. This fusion ripples through all facets of daily living, from the foods and music to the house styles and street names. Even the language is affected, with Queen's English being the official 'language' while the colourful local dialect remains in common usage. More than 70 per cent of the island's 260 000 people are direct descendents from the forced mass Africa migration of the late 1600s and 1700s-the slave trade. The island also has a peaceful blend of European (primarily British) settler blood with the Afro descendents, as well as small but vibrant Hindu (India), Arab (Lebanese and Syrian) and Jewish communities. African influence is readily seen in the art, craft and literary works produced on the island, as well as many of the foods and figures of speech. Bajans are a quick-witted, fun-loving people and their gift for the double entendre or turn of phrase is most visible through

Culture
Aside from its Spanish name, very little Spanish (or other continental) influence remains on Barbados. Its position in the Windwards made the island relatively safe from invasion, leaving British culture to incubate here for nearly 400 years. The chief example of this is the Bajan national sport, if not the national obsession: cricket. On a per capita basis, Bajans boast more world-class cricket players than any other nation. One of the game's best ever all-rounders was Barbados native Garfield Sobers, who was knighted in 1975. Another local cricket hero, Sir Frank Worrell, appears on the face of Barbados' five-dollar bill. Despite the British influence, West Indian culture is strong in family life, food and music. Calypso artist the Mighty Gabby, whose songs on cultural identity and political protest speak for emerging black pride throughout the Caribbean, is from Barbados. It's not really surprising that Barbados is fertile ground for such voices since it still suffers from a history of racial segregation and discrimination by the white minority against the black majority.

English is the official language of Barbados. Religion
As a result of its long-standing association with England, Barbados is mainly Anglican. The Moravian and Methodist Churches were added to the list of denominations of t he 18th century. Since then these have been followed by Roman Catholics, Baptists, Pentecostals, Seventh Day Adventists, Jehovah's Witnesses, Mormons, The Salvation Army and many other small religious groups. There are small groups of Hindus and Muslims, as well as a small Jewish community. These groups all have complete religious freedom. CULTURAL ORGANISATIONS An Act of Parliament, passed in March 1983, created the National Cultural Foundation (NCF). The Foundation is a Statutory Corporation which falls under the Prime Minister's Office. These groups all play their part in the promotion and development of creative arts in Barbados. FESTIVALS The Crop Over Festival
A folk festival which originated on the sugar plantations, "Crop Over" was then, as it is now, a means of celebrating the end of a hard-working sugar cane season. The three-week festival runs from mid-July to early August. It is a lively showcase of all facets of Barbadian culture, a fluid blend of African survivals and western modernity. Activities include plantation fairs, a donkey-cart parade, a King and Queen of the Crop competition, street malls and the "Pic-o-de-Crop" Calypso Monarch competition.

Most writers agree that the manufacture of sugar started in the early 1940's. The island was divided into eleven parishes. The Assembly comprised 22 elected members - two from each parish. On February 16, the inhabitants of the island declared their independence of the Commonwealth of England Articles of Agreement signed, January 11, between England and Barbados ensuring the "Rights of the People ." Barbados is the most easterly piece of land in the Caribbean Sea. Its geographical location allows the northeasterly trade winds to envelope the island and keeping it cool yearlong. This delightful climate, the big blue sea and the brilliant white sandy beaches cause tourists to visit repeatedly. The island has a number of historic sites; gently rolling landscape and dramatic scenery in hidden caves and gullies. The capital city is Bridgetown, which is in the south-western part of the island. There are a number of plantation houses there dating back to colonial times, places like St. Nicholas Abbey and Francia.
