The Baptists

and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel,

he Baptists derive from two different streams. Particular Baptists usually claim a line of descent that goes back to the Reformers. General Baptists and Landmark Baptists trace their descent from the Anabaptists.
The Baptists are probably the most diverse of all denominations. The Particular Baptists have produced several fine theologians, including John Gill, James P. Boyce, and J. L. Dagg. Augustus Strong, another well-known Baptist theologian, was an Amyraldian (four-point Calvinist).
Baptists in the twentieth century have predominantly leaned toward the more Arminian theology of the General Baptists, but the tide may be turning, as is evidenced by the growing influence of the Calvinistic Southern Baptist Founders Conference , and the growth of the Reformed Baptist churches. ADDRESS TO SOUTHERN BAPTIST LEADERS (1960)
John F. Kennedy
The Protestant immigrants to the New World brought many things in their baggage, including a deep-seated distrust of Roman Catholicism. Although Catholics had been among the early settlers of the New World, they had been a minority in the thirteen colonies that eventually became the United States. Not until significant numbers of Catholics began migrating to the United States in the mid-nineteenth century did anti-Catholicism emerge as a potent, and ugly, political and social phenomenon. Although Irish Catholics began to play a major role in local and state politics in the latter nineteenth century, the first Catholic to seek a national office was the popular governor of New York, Alfred Emanuel Smith, who was the Democratic nominee for president in 1928. Anti-Catholic prejudice, the fear that a Catholic president would "take orders" from the Pope, insured Smith's defeat. Methodist Bishop Adna Leonard declared: "No Governor can kiss the papal ring and get within gunshot of the White House." Even liberal Protestants were concerned. The Christian Century declared it could not "look with unconcern upon the seating of a representative of an alien culture, of a medieval, Latin mentality, of an undemocratic hierarchy and of a foreign potentate in the great office of the President of the United States." Smith's defeat at the polls seemed to foreclose a Catholic from seeking the White House, until John F. Kennedy captured the Democratic nomination in 1960. Much to his dismay, he discovered that many southern Protestant groups still believed in old canards about every Catholic having to obey the Pope's commands unquestioningly. He finally decided to try to defeat the issue by meeting it head-on, and on September 12, 1960, he delivered the following statement before the Greater Houston Ministerial Association.

Baptist Press WASHINGTON (BP)The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom has urged Secretary of State Colin Powell to designate 11 countries as severe violators of religious liberty, including first-time notations for Eritrea, India, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkmenistan and Vietnam. In its recommendations of "countries of particular concern" to the State Department, the commission proposed that five countries Burma, China, Iran, North Korea and Sudan be returned to the CPC list of governments noted for "systematic, ongoing and egregious violations of religious freedom."

The Rev. Dr. Larry L. Greenfield "I promise (or swear) to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth." Those words are usually associated with the courtroom. But those words about telling the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth help us understand something more broadly about faith-not just religious faith, but civic (or public and political ) faith as well. There are, that is, both religious and civic faith communities that prize-deeply value-truth-telling, and truth-seeking, and truth-teaching in a complete and uncompromising way. And there are also both religious and civic faith communities that do not prize-that devalue-truth-telling, and truth-seeking, and truth-teaching. As a Baptist minister and Protestant theologian, I understand that it is this divide-this very decisive divide-that explains why in both religious and secular faith communities there are people who fervently support abstinence-based comprehensive sexuality education and there are those who oppose it, who exclusively support abstinence-only-until-marriage sexuality education. It boils down to whether these people on different sides of the debate about the sexuality education of our children and youth are committed to telling the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth or if they believe that
