Adherents.com presents:
Religion in Australia
Religions in Australia, 1996 Census
The table below is based on self-identification, i.e., what respondents indicated their religion was in the 1996 Australian census. This was the only optional question on the census. Respondents were asked to mark one of the seven specified religions (Catholic, Anglican, Uniting Church, Presbyterian, Greek Orthodox, Baptist, or Lutheran) or to specify a particular religion. Persons with no religion were asked to mark the no religion box. Many of the "religions" here are not single organizations but are classifications or categories of related faith groups. A wider variety of responses (including dozens of distinct Christian denominations) have been summarized in this table, based on the "major religions" defined in the "Major Religions of the World" list. (The one exception to this is that Australian Aboriginal traditional religion has been left as is, rather than being grouped with "Animism" into the "primal-indigenous" category. It is quite possible that the 727 people who listed their religion as "Animism" are, in fact, adherents of Australian aboriginal religion.) Because the Christianity category includes so many different groups, the "Top 15 Christian Denominations" are provided in a separate table. [The

Baptist Watch was last updated 12 April 2004 at 8:27pm EST
PURPOSE

Baptist Watch was started in response to the murder of Matthew Shepard. He was brutally beaten to death in October of 1998 because of his sexual orientation. Matthew was gay. Westboro Baptist church, led by Reverend Fred Phelps, picketed his funeral carrying signs reading "no tears for queers" and "god hates fags". Preacher Phelps maintains two websites called " GOD HATES FAGS " and " GOD HATES AMERICA Phelps speaks what many Conservative "Christians" believe, but are afraid to say in public. To borrow a phrase from Episcopal Bishop John Shelby Spong, Christianity is currently a religion being hijacked by fundamentalists. These people of hate receive constant attention from the news media and paint a terrible picture of the religion based on the love and compassion of Jesus. The purpose of this webpage is to expose the actions of fundamentalist zealots like Reverend Phelps. I sincerely hope that you will enjoy this webpage and return to it often. Thank you for visiting!

Jerman of Llanidloes - Family History Project Social Themes - Religion The Baptist Chapel, Short Bridge Street. Obscured by the car, to the right of the chapel is a bench dedicated to the memory of J.W. Jones The Jerman family were up until present times prominent members of the Baptist community in Llanidloes and a large number of marriages, baptisms and funerals have taken place in the Chapel in Short Bridge Street. This Chapel was constructed in the 1876 along with other new chapels built in Llanidloes in this prosperous period for the town and mirrors the explosion of non-conformist worship in Wales generally from the middle of the nineteenth century. In earlier times we find reference to dissent from the prevailing orthodoxy of the Church of England: 1677: In this year, on the 18th July, two priests, viz. Hugh Wilson, priest of Trefeglwys and Isaac Lloyd, priest of Llanidloes, gave information of a Friends' Meeting at the house of John Jerman at Llanidloes, upon which the Mayor, with constables, came thither, and committed seven of the assembly to prison and fined others, who had their cattle seized for their fines". Bishop's politics crosses fine line
JAMES L. EVANS
BIRMINGHAM POST-HERALD
The Roman Catholic bishop of Colorado, Rev. Michael Sheridan, has raised the role of faith in politics to a new level of complexity. He announced recently that Catholics who vote for candidates who support issues such as abortion rights, stem cell research, gay marriage and euthanasia should be barred from receiving Holy Communion. A few Catholic bishops across the country previously had announced they would withhold communion from politicians who break with the church's teaching on these issues. But Bishop Sheridan's declaration moves the debate from the campaign trail to the voting booth. It's important to realize just how significant this is. Holy Communion occupies a singular place of importance for Catholics. Receiving the bread and wine is not merely a ritual for commemorating Jesus' death as it is in many Protestant traditions. Holy Communion is the portal through which Catholics believe they enter into the salvation of God. Worshippers who are barred from Holy Communion are effectively cut off from the church and from God. It would be interesting to find out how Bishop Sheridan plans to enforce his declaration. Unless he has some special arrangement with either God or the company that makes the voting machines, he is going to be hard-pressed to prove anything. Voting in this country is a private matter.

“The voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord’” Standing Firm for Freedom - The Baptist Heritage of Religious Liberty
By Steven R. Harmon, Assistant Professor of Christian Theology,
Campbell University Divinity School, Buies Creek, NC
Editor’s Note : This sermon was delivered at the annual meeting of the Baptist History and Heritage Society, Carson-Newman College, Jefferson City, Tennessee, June 22, 2002. Reprinted by permission from Baptist History and Heritage 37, no. 3 (Summer/Fall 2002): 89ff. “Freedom” is probably the word we use most frequently to describe the American experience. As Americans we enjoy freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of religion, the freedom to earn a living of our own devising. But long before “freedom” became a characteristically American word, it was a thoroughly Christian word. The earliest Christians often described their experience of God’s salvation in Christ as a passage from slavery to freedom. Salvation as freedom from slavery is an idea that runs throughout the New Testament, but it’s especially prominent in the letters of Paul, in particular Paul’s letter to the Christians of the region of Galatia in Asia Minor. In fact, Galatians has sometimes been called the “Magna Charta” of Christian freedom.

“The voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord’” Religious Liberty as a Baptist Distinctive
By James Dunn, Wake Forest Divinity School
Visiting Professor of Christianity and Public Policy
Past Executive Director of the Baptist Joint Committee on Public Affairs Editor’s Note: This address was delivered at the Texas Baptist Christian Life Commission Annual Conference held on February 12, 2001, at Tarrytown Baptist Church in Austin, Texas. T here is an unbroken chain from the historical and theological starting point for Baptists: soul freedom, to religious liberty for all and its necessary corollary, separation of church and state.      See three concentric circles like the movement in water when a pebble hits a pond. The center circle is the point of impact, representing the experience of one person with the Divine, the central event of one’s life, an Act of God’s Grace, the immediate engagement of heaven with earth: soul freedom.      The inevitable ripple, the next circle out represents the certain consequences of a saving faith, the moral, ethical and social result of an individual encounter with God. Loving one’s neighbor as self, doing unto others as one would be done unto, people plural…we call it religious liberty.
