II. Religion in Eighteenth-Century America
A gainst a prevailing view that eighteenth-century Americans had not perpetuated the first settlers' passionate commitment to their faith, scholars now identify a high level of religious energy in colonies after 1700. According to one expert, religion was in the "ascension rather than the declension"; another sees a "rising vitality in religious life" from 1700 onward; a third finds religion in many parts of the colonies in a state of "feverish growth." Figures on church attendance and church formation support these opinions. Between 1700 and 1740, an estimated 75 to 80 percent of the population attended churches, which were being built at a headlong pace. Toward mid-century the country experienced its first major religious revival. The Great Awakening swept the English-speaking world, as religious energy vibrated between England, Wales, Scotland and the American colonies in the 1730s and 1740s. In America, the Awakening signaled the advent of an encompassing evangelicalismthe belief that the essence of religious experience was the "new birth," inspired by the preaching of the Word. It invigorated even as it divided churches. The supporters of the Awakening and its evangelical thrustPresbyterians, Baptists and Methodistsbecame the largest American Protestant denominations by the first decades of the nineteenth century. Opponents of the Awakening or those split by itAnglicans, Quakers, and Congregationalistswere left behind.

Yoga: A Religion for Sex Addicts Special Report
What Pastor Deacon Fred found is that Landover's teachings regarding Yoga were pulled from the Sunday School curriculum during the early 1980's when it was thought that Yoga was no longer being practiced in the State of Iowa. "Do you mean to tell me that we have a religion like Yoga that teaches it's followers how to contort their bodies into demonic positions with the ultimate goal of being able to place their sexual organs into their mouths, and you are not warning our children about this!?" said Pastor Deacon Fred. Sister Kirnhill was silent. "If this is not placed back into our curriculum and taught in graphic detail to our 3rd graders by next Sunday, then you can consider yourself, FIRED!" yelled Deacon Fred. Creation Science teaches us that "Yoga" is a religion that sprang forth from the corrupt roots of sexual depravity in the 1960's. A time when godless long-haired liberals were running around our country trying to get people to turn their backs on Christ and embrace other made-up religions. Secular scholars argue that the practice of "Yoga" is nearly 3,000 years old. We know this to be a lie because the Bible never mentions anything about it, and the Bible is the most accurate historical book ever written. Creation Scientists place the origins of "Yoga," closer to 1963 when film actress Connie Stevens is seen doing it on historically archived film.

Southern Baptist prayer guides:
"The International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) has published a series of prayer guides tied to non-Christian religions and their observances. The guides are intended to assist Baptists to pray for the salvation of all persons through the gospel of Jesus Christ, and to learn about other religions in order to reach their adherents for Christ." The Southern Baptist Convention teaches that personal salvation is only possible through trust and belief in Jesus as Lord and Savior. Thus, they believe that followers of other religions are lost. These beliefs motivate them strongly to try to convert "the lost" to a saving knowledge of Jesus. Each of these guides is written about a specific religion. They are generally printed in advance of that religion's major seasonal holy day(s). For example, perhaps the most controversial " prayer guide was designed to help Southern Baptists to pray for the conversion of their Jewish friends and neighbors as the Jews observe Rosh Hashanah.

In recent years, the conservatism of the SBC leadership has drawn some criticism and caused some defections. But by every objective measure, the denomination is thriving more than 16 million members, a new record, in more than 42,000 churches, in every state, with total offerings and gifts of nearly $9 billion a year.

Current Stories Cover Story: Nine Mile Canyon Dilemma Profile: Father Joe: Slum Priest Headlines: This Week in Religion News BOB ABERNETHY : In other news, the Watts Street Baptist Church in Durham, North Carolina, is scheduled to vote this weekend on whether to break ties with the Southern Baptist convention, the nation's largest Protestant denomination. Kim Lawton reports that this vote comes on the heels of a decision by another North Carolina Baptist church to make the break.
KIM LAWTON : For more than 150 years, First Baptist Church, Raleigh's oldest Baptist church, was part of the Southern Baptist Convention. That relationship came to an end last week. Church members said the SBC has become too politically and theologically conservative and too heavy-handed in imposing its views.
Unidentified Woman #1: I got to the place I was ashamed to say I was a Baptist. So I'm glad we pulled out.
Unidentified Woman #2: I think we're on the same path we've always been on. I think the Southern Baptist Convention isn't. I think they've deviated.

Baptist Temple tax dispute Church building confiscated to pay tax debt
Updated: 07-24-2001
Put in place by church members, a black shroud representing the death of religious liberty is draped over a sign in front of the Indianapolis Baptist Temple. (Staff photo / John Severson) For 16 years the leaders of the Indianapolis Baptist Temple refused to withhold federal taxes from their employees' paychecks or to pay federal taxes as an employer. The protest came to an end Feb. 13, 2001 , when federal marshals seized the church building to pay taxes and fines totalling $6 million. The church was ordered to be sold at auction by U.S. District Judge Sarah Evans Barker in a Sept. 28, 2000, ruling, in which she gave the conservative evangelical congregation until Nov. 14 to vacate. (See the full text of the opinion)
When that date arrived hundreds of church members and their supporters waited in the church for the marshals to come. But the U.S. Marshals Office took a cautious approach, seeking to ensure a peaceful end to the standoff that had been building for 16 years. And the church did have one last hope - an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. But on Jan. 16, 2001, the Court refused to hear the case. Even after that ruling it would be nearly a month before the marshals came.
