Worldwide Baptist Convention Gets Underway In Cuba
By Jim Burns. CNS Senior Staff Writer. 03 July, 2000. CNS News (CNSNews.com) - For the first time in history, Havana, Cuba is the scene as Baptist religion leaders from around the world began a six day General Council meeting of the Baptist World Alliance Monday. The leaders will discuss what officials call "issues of importance to Baptist life" as well as demonstrating their support for the Cuban Baptist community. Baptists are the largest Protestant group in Cuba. Denton Lotz, BWA General Secretary explained that the religious organization decided to meet in Cuba, "to experience revival, encourage the Baptist family in Cuba, learn from them and proclaim the Word of Christ." "For many years, due to ideological struggles around the world, Cuban Baptists had been cut off from many brothers and sisters. Therefore, it is with great joy that we have accepted the kind invitation of the Cuban Baptists. It is the Cuban Baptists who invited us, who are hosting this meeting, who have opened their hearts and churches to Baptists worldwide," Lotz said. Lotz made it clear that the meeting isn't being held in Cuba, "to affirm a particular philosophy or a system of government. We do not affirm a culture or ideology; we go to affirm the movement of Christ among our people."

II. Religion in Eighteenth-Century America
A gainst a prevailing view that eighteenth-century Americans had not perpetuated the first settlers' passionate commitment to their faith, scholars now identify a high level of religious energy in colonies after 1700. According to one expert, religion was in the "ascension rather than the declension"; another sees a "rising vitality in religious life" from 1700 onward; a third finds religion in many parts of the colonies in a state of "feverish growth." Figures on church attendance and church formation support these opinions. Between 1700 and 1740, an estimated 75 to 80 percent of the population attended churches, which were being built at a headlong pace. Toward mid-century the country experienced its first major religious revival. The Great Awakening swept the English-speaking world, as religious energy vibrated between England, Wales, Scotland and the American colonies in the 1730s and 1740s. In America, the Awakening signaled the advent of an encompassing evangelicalismthe belief that the essence of religious experience was the "new birth," inspired by the preaching of the Word. It invigorated even as it divided churches. The supporters of the Awakening and its evangelical thrustPresbyterians, Baptists and Methodistsbecame the largest American Protestant denominations by the first decades of the nineteenth century. Opponents of the Awakening or those split by itAnglicans, Quakers, and Congregationalistswere left behind.

  • Name: National Baptist Convention, USA Founders: Reverend David George, Reverend George Lisle, BrotherPalmer (first name not known) Date of Birth: The only information about Palmer is that he was anitinerant preacher who regularly visited slave plantations along the SavannahRiver. As for Reverend George, he was born a slave in 1742, likely nearSilver Bluff, SC. A date and place of birth is not known for Rev. Lisle, theBritish officer's servant who occassionally preached at the church at SilverBluff (Pelt and Smith, 30). Birth Place: Rev. George was born near Silver Bluff, but because of their slaveorigins the places of Palmer and Lisle's births are not documented. Year Founded: Sacred or Revered Texts: The Holy Bible Cult or Sect: Negative sentiments are typically implied when the concepts "cult" and "sect" are employed in popular discourse. Since the Religious Movements Homepage seeks to promote religious tolerance and appreciation of the positive benefits of pluralism and religious diversity in human cultures, we encourage the use of alternative concepts that do not carry implicit negative stereotypes. For a more detailed discussion of both scholarly and popular usage of the concepts "cult" and "sect," please visit our Conceptualizing "Cult" and "Sect" page, where you will find additional links to related issues.

    FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH
    A Place to Belong
First Baptist Church is located at the corner of Victoria Avenue and Lorne Street in the heart of downtown Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. First Baptist Church has been an integral part of our city and wider world since its inception in 1891. Located in the heart of Regina, we are one of the most dynamic ministries in the downtown core.
For some years now, we at First Baptist Church have identified our church as being "a place to belong". What we are striving to be is summed up in our covenant First Baptist Church is a large and diverse family. We come from many different backgrounds and from all parts of our city. That diversity makes our fellowship exciting and challenging. The heart of our community, however, is our Lord Jesus Christ in whom we share faith and mission. The good news of the gospel gives impetus and joy in our city becoming a better and more humane place to live. Go to the INDEX to find out more...

    West Hills Baptist Church
6501 SW Multnomah Blvd. Portland, Oregon. (503) 246-4126
West Hills Baptist Church was established on September 4th, 1957 with members gathered within the Multnomah Legion Hall. Until recently (Aug 2003) under the leadership of Pastor Peter Kelly (a previous youth minister, sports coach, associate pastor and journeyman electrician), WHBC takes care to insure that we are a Bible teaching church with New King James Bibles provided in the pews for services. Worship with hymns, individual song and contemporary lyrics create a whole family fellowship.
WHBC is currently seeking to create several music teams for worship to the Lord and asks for interested persons to contact our office via the e-mail button or in person.
We are an "Independent Baptist Church" in fellowship with the "NW Regular Baptist Fellowship" and with the "General Association of Regular Baptist Churches" of Schaumburg, Illinois.
WHBC has Bible education for all ages from primary through adult. Teaching materials are furnished through the "Regular Baptist Press" and also "Word of Life International". It is important to state that the Word of God begins in Genesis with "In the beginning God created the Heavens and the Earth". WHBC supports Biblical Creation as an important foundation to understanding the Gospel; to Him alone goes the glory.
