Map 1 Map 2 Map 3 Map 4 History Ancient Period The reconstruction of the history of Bengal in the pre-Muslim period is difficult due to paucity of sources. The difficulty is felt more acutely for the earlier period, down to the 4th century AD, when Bengal came under the Imperial Guptas. For this period we have to depend on very scanty references in the Vedic, Epic and Puranic literature as well as on the available archaeological evidence. From the Gupta period onwards we get written records in the form of epigraphs and literature which contain information on the history of the 'region' of Bengal. Background In the earliest period Bengal was known to be inhabited by different groups of people, whose names came to be associated with the area inhabited by them. Thus the ancient janapadas of vanga pundra radha and gauda came to be recognised as inhabited by non-Aryan ethnic groups bearing those names. samatata was an important janapada in the trans-Meghna region of Bangladesh in its southeastern part (Comilla-Noakhali area). The name of this janapada was purely descriptive and had no ethnic connection. The Chittagong area with its adjacent areas was known by the name of harikela . The existence of these janapadas is known from later Vedic literature, as areas inhabited by non-Aryan people.

Ages of Bangla The information productivity gap both accelerates and widens. In the US, 10% of GNP is devoted to purchase of computer hardware and software; Germany is around 7%. In Bangladesh it is one-tenth of 1%. Where will they find the money to buy the hardware and software, to pay for the education so that they can use computers? - Michael Dertouzos
The ancient, medieval, and colonial history of Bangladesh covers a period from antiquity to 1947, when India was partitioned. So the history of Bangladesh prior to 1947 is a history of India of which Bangladesh was a part. In fact, the history of India is a history of Bengal for the most part. Today Bangladesh is an independent nation within the Indian subcontinent, but is less than half of the old Bengal or Bangla. Even though Bangladesh is a modern state, her history can be traced back to about 1000 BC. There are many theories about the origin of the name B(v)anga or B(v)angla. Some linguists believe that the name originates from the Tibetan word, "Bans which means wet or moist and Banga (Bengal) is a wet country crisscrossed by a thousand rivers and washed by monsoons and floods from the Himalayas. Some others believe that the name originated from the Bodo (original Asamese in North Eastern India) "Bang La" which means wide plains. Another school suggests the name comes from the name of Prince Vanga. According to legend, Prince Vanga, the son of King Bali and Queen Sudeshna of the Lunar dynasty was the first to colonise Bengal.

The History of the flag of Bangladesh
The national flag of Bangladesh was a product which first came into idea of painter Quamrul Hasan. On the 3rd March 1971, ASM Abdur Rab the then VP of Dhaka University Students´ Union had the honour of hoisting the first flag of Independent Bangladesh at the Dhaka University premise popularly known as Bat-tala. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman hoisted the flag of independent Bangladesh at his residence, 32 Dhanmondi R/A, at the outskirt of Dhaka, on the 23rd March 1971. It was an unknown Awami League worker who hoisted the first flag of independence at the historical meeting at the then Ramna Race-course on the 7th March 1971 where Sheikh Mujib tacitly called for armed struggle against Pakistani occupation Army. For Quamrul Hasan, making and shaping of the flag needed several months to complete.
Unique features of the first flag of Independent Bangladesh was absence of the crescent and star (as in the Pakistan´s flag) , symbol of the Islamic states. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the Bangalees dreamed for the secular Bangladesh. The red circular disc with map of Bangladesh symbolizes blood of thousands of Bangalis killed by the Pakistanis since 1947 in the Golden Bangla. The green backdrop is, nevertheless to say, symbolizes the vitality, youthfulness, greenery and of course symbolizes also our land as the agrarian since the pre- Vedic age.

    I nternational Women's Day
International Women's Day (8 March) is an occasion marked by women's groups around the world. This date is also commemorated at the United Nations and is designated in many countries as a national holiday. When women on all continents, often divided by national boundaries and by ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic and political differences, come together to celebrate their Day, they can look back to a tradition that represents at least nine decades of struggle for equality, justice, peace and development. International Women's Day is the story of ordinary women as makers of history; it is rooted in the centuries-old struggle of women to participate in society on an equal footing with men. In ancient Greece, Lysistrata initiated a sexual strike against men in order to end war; during the French Revolution, Parisian women calling for "liberty, equality, fraternity" marched on Versailles to demand women's suffrage. The idea of an International Women's Day first arose at the turn of the century, which in the industrialized world was a period of expansion and turbulence, booming population growth and radical ideologies.

Bangladesh may only have existed as an independent state for 30 years but its cultural and linguistic roots go deep. The Bangla language (the term Bengali was just a British colonial rendering of this) was distinct by the 7th century and a literature written in it was emerging by the 11th century. Religion has also tended to set the Bangla-speaking people apart: for more than a millennium they bucked the Hindu trend by remaining Buddhist, while since the 12th century, when Muslims invaded from the northwest, Islam has won the loyalty of the majority.

THE ROOTS "Bangladesh has a hundred gates open for entrance but not one for departure" -Bernier. Bangladesh is a new state in an ancient land. It has been described by an American political scientist as "a country challenged by contradictions". On the face of it, the recent twists and turns of her history are often inconsistent. It is neither a distinct geographical entity, nor a well-defined historical unit. Nevertheless, it is the homeland of the ninth largest nation in the world whose gropings for a political identity were protracted, intense and agonizing. The key to these apparent contradictions lies in her history Etymologically, the word Bangladesh is derived from the cognate "Vanga" which was first mentioned in the Hindu scripture Aitareya Aranyaka (composed between 500 B C and 500 A D). Legend has it that Bengal was first colonized by Prince Vanga, the son of King Bali and Queen Sudeshna of the Lunar dynasty. According to linguists, the roots of the term Vanga may be traced to languages in the adjoining areas. One school of linguists maintain that the word "Vanga" is derived from the Tibetan word "Bans" which implies "wet and moist". According to this interpretation, Bangladesh literally refers to a wetland. Another school is of the opinion that the term "Vangla" is derived from Bodo (aborigines of Assam) words "Bang" and "la" which connote "wide plains." Proto-history and Pre-history

It was a part of Pakistan from 1947 to 1971 and before 1947 it was one of the most fertile land of the Indian sub-continent. The country occupies an area of about 145000 square kilometers mostly consisting of alluvial deltaic flood plains washed by the three major rivers of the region - the Ganges, the Brahmaputra and the Meghna and innumerable tributaries and distributaries. The lush green environment has scanty of mineral resources but has large reserve of natural gas. The climate is temperate but humid during the rainy season. The Tropic of Cancer divides the country almost into two halves.

Bangladesh is important to world energy markets because of its large potential natural gas reserves. Note: information contained in this report is the best available as of May 2003 and can change.
    GENERAL BACKGROUND
In November 2002, Germany agreed to provide Bangladesh with $27 million to be used for the improvement of feeder roads and market facilities in rural areas, solar energy systems, and business development services. Previously undisbursed funds from Germany's other committments to the country will now be earmarked for improvements in the energy sector. Bangladesh is primarily agricultural (around two-thirds of the labor force and 35% of the gross domestic product GDP), although urbanization is proceeding rapidly. This heavy reliance on agriculture makes Bangladesh vulnerable to natural disasters such as cyclones, floods, and droughts, as well as to world commodity prices. Over the past several years, however, Bangladesh has experienced bumper crops and strong growth in the agricultural sector. Bangladesh has moved increasingly towards a market-oriented economy since the mid-1970s, although the majority of enterprises remain under state control. Bangladesh is attempting to diversify its economy away from agriculture, and has made industrial development a priority. Exports are increasing at around 8% annually. Currently, cotton textiles and garments account for around 80% of Bangladeshi exports. Bangladesh is attempting to attract foreign investment, and has established export processing zones (EPZs) in Chittagong (the country's major port) and Dhaka (the capital), with plans for more such zones. Most investment is coming in the natural gas, electricity, and physical infrastructure areas. Exports of natural gas could provide a major additional revenue source for Bangladesh, but the issue remains controversial, and no final decision has been made on whether to allow exports.
