HISTORY
The history of Bangladesh has been one of extreme. It has thrived in the glow of cultural splendor and suffered under the ravage of wars. Some medieval European geographers located a paradise at the mouth of the Ganges River that was the deltaic land of Bengal. Bengal is the ancient name of present day Bangladesh. Bengal was the wealthiest part of the
Indian Subcontinent until the 16th century.

It is assumed that the Austro-Asiatic race first inhabited this region in prehistoric age. Afterwards came the Dravidians, Aryans and Mongoloids. Archeological excavations show signs of powerful dynasties that ruled the land till the Muslims from the Central Asian region conquered it in the 13th century AD and established their rule. A succession of Muslim monarchies
ruled over the area till 1757, when the British conquest took place. In 1947 the British left the Indian Subcontinent and Bengal came to be known as East Bengal and then in 1956 as East Pakistan. In 1971 through an armed struggle Bangladesh emerged as an independent state.

In 1947, India became independent and a new country was created from the two parts called Pakistan where Muslims were in the majority. East Pakistan actually was East Bengal which is now Bangladesh. After a brief period of conflict with Pakistan, Bangladesh came into existence on 16th December1971.

Education system:
In Bangladesh about 35% adults are litereate. Poor families cannot afford to let their children go to school so instead they work. Although primary schools are free, only about 80% of eligible pupils attend them. Only 25% of them will complete five years of basic education. After having completed basic or primary education pupils start class 6 at high school and get their Secondary School Certificate after they have studied another 4 years.

    Before Independence
The history of Bangladesh is related to that of the larger area of Bengal, which became independent of Delhi by 1341. After a succession of Muslim rulers, it was conquered by Akbar, the great Mughal emperor in 1576. By the beginning of the 18th cent., the governor of the province was virtually independent, but he lost control to the British East India Company, which after 1775 was the effective ruler of the vast area, which also included the Indian states of West Bengal, Orissa, Jharkhand, and Bihar. Bengal was divided by the British in 1905 into West Bengal and East Bengal, with East Bengal being more or less coterminous with modern Bangladesh. Since the new province had a majority Muslim population, the partition was welcomed by Muslims, but it was fiercely resented by Indian nationalist leaders who saw it as an attempt to drive a wedge between Muslims and Hindus. The partition was withdrawn in 1911, but it had pointed the way to the events of 1947, when British India was partitioned into the states of India and Pakistan. Pakistan consisted of two "wings," one to the west of India, and the other to the east. The eastern section was constituted from the eastern portion of

    History
The area which is now Bangladesh has a rich historical and cultural past, combining Dravidian, Indo-Aryan, Mongol/Mughul, Arab, Persian, Turkic, and West European cultures. Residents of Bangladesh, about 98% of whom are ethnic Bengali and speak Bangla, are called Bangladeshis. Urdu-speaking, non-Bengali Muslims of Indian origin, and various tribal groups, mostly in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, comprise the remainder. Most Bangladeshis (about 83%) are Muslims, but Hindus constitute a sizable (16%) minority. There are also a small number of Buddhists, Christians, and animists. English is spoken in urban areas, and among the educated. About 1200 AD, Muslim invaders, under Sufi influence, supplanted existing Hindu and Buddhist dynasties in Bengal. This incursion led to the conversion to Islam of most of the population in the eastern areas of Bengal, and created a sizable Muslim minority in the western areas of Bengal. Since then, Islam has played a crucial role in the region's history and politics. Bengal was absorbed into the Mughul Empire in the 16th century, and Dhaka, the seat of a nawab (the representative of the emperor), gained some importance as a provincial center. But, it remained remote and thus a difficult-to-govern regionespecially the section east of the Brahmaputra Riveroutside the mainstream of Mughul politics.

    History
Bangladesh came into being through a long history of political evolution. Bengal was probably the wealthiest part of the subcontinent till the 16th century. The early history featured a succession of Indian empires, internal squabbling and a tussle between Hinduism and Buddhism for dominance. All of these were just a prelude to the rise of Islam over northern India at the end of the 12th century. Mohammed Bakhtiar Khalzhi from Turkistan captured Bengal in 1199 with only 20 men. Then came the Mughal rule. Under the Mughal viceroys, art and literature flourished, overland trade expanded and Bengal was opened to world maritime trade - the latter marking the death knell of Mughal power as Europeans began to establish themselves in the region. The Portuguese arrived as early as the 15th century but were ousted in 1633 by local opposition. The East India Company negotiated terms to establish a fortified trading post in Calcutta in 1690.

History BaSE was founded in 1992 to coordinate the handicraft activity present in the area gravitating on Khulna (South West of Bangladesh).
In doing so BaSE provides a chance to the groups which are out of the main stream of help.
From 1972 to 1977 Handicrafts Activities started in various villages of Bangladesh with the help and cooperation of different Organisations present in Bangladesh.
For the South West area the main problem was the very difficult communication with the Capital, where the coordinating NGO's had their head-offices.
In 1977 a few groups of our area managed to get in touch with some Buyer Organisation (mainly European).
One of these groups (Bhabarpara Pat Kutir Shilpo), organised as Registered Cooperative Society, obtained the Export Permit and started exporting directly through the nearby Port of Mongla.
In 1978 a commettee was formed, to coordinate the activity of all the groups present on the area and to share the export facilities. A few of the Buyers came to visit us and started sending us joint orders of handicrafts, which were exported using the Export Permit of Bhabarpara Pat Kutir Shilpo.
Around 1985, our main Buyer at the time (Sir John Ltd.) suggested that we organise in a proper way and he offered to bear the expenses for a printed Catalogue which would include the material of all the producer groups involved. To collect all the photos and prepare a detailed price list took us more time than expected, also because of the constant increase of the number of producers' groups to whom the cooperation was extended. But this was the step that brought us to become BaSE. Joint orders of handicrafts were coming from the buyers, compelling us to organise ourselves in a stable way.

A Lesson for Yugoslavia In Bangladesh's History
By Philip Bowring International Herald Tribune DHAKA - The Indian Subcontinent offers some important lessons for Yugoslavia. It is a pity that India, with almost characteristic hypocrisy, has been so quick to criticize the NATO action as interference in the internal affairs of a sovereign state. The Delhi statement sounded odd here last week when Bangladesh was celebrating the anniversary of its independence. The final success of Bangladesh's war of liberation from Pakistan, achieved in December 1971, was due to India's massive and direct military intervention in support of the secessionist movement. The creation of Bangladesh - now the world's eighth most populous nation - was by far the largest incidence since 1945 of one state participating with military force in the dismemberment of another. It created a precedent that is worth examining. India's motives in 1971 were certainly not entirely idealistic. It had every interest in the dismemberment of its main enemy, Pakistan, and the creation on India's eastern border of a state that was weak and in India's debt.

According to the Bangladesh government, ever since that military intervention, Indian forces have occupied a small sliver of land along their border near the village of Pyrdiwah. On April 18, troops of the Bangladeshi Rifles (border troops) occupied the disputed village. In the fighting that followed, 15 members of India's border forces, the Border Security Force (BSF) were killed, along with several of the attacking soldiers. Indian forces responded and retook the village. Between 10,000 and 20,000 villagers living in the area fled the fighting, with at least 17 suffering wounds. The combat remained limited to the border troops of the respective nations, though mortars were used in addition to automatic weapons fire. Several villages were destroyed or heavily damaged in the fighting.
