Erosion by rivers grabs nearly 25,000 acres of land every year, rendering thousands homeless. Bangladesh Disaster Preparedness Forum in a recent report, based on the studies of different organisations, said more than 25 lakh people were rendered homeless as the rivers devoured their homesteads along with the sources of livelihood. The report said the Brahmaputra (Jamuna) is the most furious river that entered Bangladesh through Kurigram and made its way up to Manikganj, eroding vast tracts on both sides of its bank. The Padma and the Meghna are two other major rivers, which appeared with their all devouring wrath, engulfing thousands of acres of lands in several northwestern and central parts of the country. Matiur Rahman Nizami
Jamaat-e-Islami The decision was taken after consulting with the main political parties in Bangladesh, which have backed the move. A non-party caretaker administration is in charge of the government ahead of general elections which are due on 1 October. A senior foreign ministry official, Shafi Sami, said the government believed there was widespread public support for the development of an international coalition against terrorism. The move would not damage the stability of Bangladesh, he added.

Bangladesh's Zia keen to form government
Zia's four party alliance won an unofficial landslide but needs it to be confirmed before she can start to build a government DHAKA, Bangladesh The woman expected to become Bangladesh's next prime minister is seeking quick confirmation of her party's landslide victory in Monday's election. Khaleda Zia, who led the country in the early 1990s as Bangladesh's first woman prime minister, says she wants to form the next government without delay. Before she can take power though she needs the election commission to publish the results of Monday's poll confirming her four-party alliance's landslide win. Supporters of the outgoing Awami League led by former prime minister Sheikh Hasina are accusing Zia's party of vote rigging. However, international observers have said the election, supervised by a neutral caretaker administration, was free and fair.
