The country has an area of 144,000 square kilometers and extends 820 kilometers north to south and 600 kilometers east to west. Bangladesh is bordered on the west, north, and east by a 2,400-kilometer land frontier with India and, in the southeast, by a short land and water frontier (193 kilometers) with Burma. On the south is a highly irregular deltaic coastline of about 600 kilometers, fissured by many rivers and streams flowing into the Bay of Bengal. The territorial waters of Bangladesh extend 12 nautical miles, and the exclusive economic zone of the country is 200 nautical miles. Roughly 80 percent of the landmass is made up of fertile alluvial lowland called the Bangladesh Plain. The plain is part of the larger Plain of Bengal, which is sometimes called the Lower Gangetic Plain. Although altitudes up to 105 meters above sea level occur in the northern part of the plain, most elevations are less than 10 meters above sea level; elevations decrease in the coastal south, where the terrain is generally at sea level. With such low elevations and numerous rivers, waterand concomitant floodingis a predominant physical feature. About 10,000 square kilometers of the total area of Bangladesh is covered with water, and larger areas are routinely flooded during the monsoon season.

    Sexual relationships in Southeast Asia

Southeast Asia is about more than Buddhist monks, tropical fruit, and white-sand beaches. It is also about the most beautiful women in the world, and excellent prospects for Western men to enter into meaningful sexual relationships. And I have to stress: I do not mean frequenting prostitutes. Of course, the wide range options for meaningful sexual relationships that exists in Southeast Asia is not obvious to the tourist or occasional business visitor. Like most of the Western men who live permanently in Southeast Asia, I myself have moved to this part of the world in search of paradise… not on palm-fringed beaches, but in the embrace of young beautiful women (and no, not the same one for years on end). I have now set up a new website, www.AsiaLove.org

Photo: Shafiqul Alam/Oxfam Much of the land was formed from silt brought by the three great rivers (the Ganges, the Brahmaputra, and the Meghna). This kind of land is called a delta. Problems occur when there is unusually high rainfall, or when the rivers become exceptionally full, leading to extra-high flood levels. Surviving the floods depends on having early-warning systems, on building houses on stilts, above high-water level, and on having flood shelters (which are raised platforms made of earth).

Physical Overview Most of the areas of Bangladesh lies within the broad delta formed by the Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers. Lands are exceedingly flat, low-lying, and subject to annual flooding. Much fertile, alluvial soil is deposited by the floodwaters. The only significant area of hilly terrain, constituting less than one-tenth of the nation's territory, is the Chittagong Hill Tracts in the narrow southeastern panhandle of the country. There, on the border with Burma, is Mowdok Mual (1003 m/3292 ft), the country's highest peak. Small, scattered hills lie along or near the eastern and northern borders with India. The eroded remnants of two old alluvial terraces-the Madhupur Tract, in the north central part of the country, and The Barind, straddling the northwestern boundary with India- attain elevations of about 30 m (about 100 ft). The soil here is much less fertile than the annually replenished alluvium of the surrounding floodplain.

    http://www.britishempire.co.uk/boniface/humanities/geography/year8/bangladesh.ht
A Brief History Bangladesh is a new country but a very old culture. The country was only formed in 1971. Before that it had been called East Pakistan. After a Civil War, East and West Pakistan became separate countries. Before 1947, Bangladesh had been part of the British Empire. Before that, it was part of the Mughal Empire. From 1200 AD a number of Muslim missionaries arrived in the area and began converting the Hindu and Buddhist population to Islam. Land and Water The Delta Bangladesh is a flat country on the delta of three large rivers: The Ganges, the Brahmaputra and the Mehtna. The silt that these three rivers have deposited in the delta means that Bangladesh is a very fertile country. However, the low level of the delta land means that the country is prone to flooding. 75% of Bangladesh is at or below just 10 metres in height. This plain makes up the majority of Bangladesh. Although, there are some hills in the south-east of the country. The east of the country contains thick forest. The Weather Monsoon Rains The low land of the Bangladesh delta makes it easy for it to flood. There are two main reasons why flooding can occur: Rivers overflowing and monsoon rains. Interestingly, both of these events happen many hundreds or even thousands of miles away from Bangladesh and there is very little that Bangladesh can do to prevent them from happening.
