The history of Bangladesh has been one of extremes, of turmoil and peace, prosperity and destitution. It has thrived under the glow of cultural splendour and suffered under the ravages of war. The earliest mention of Bangladesh is found in the Hindu epic, the Mahabharata (the story of Great Battle-9th century B.C). Evidence also suggests that there was a strong Mongoloid presence as well. Soon after, in the 5th and 6th centuries B.C. came the Aryans from Central Asia and the Dravidians from Western India. Then came the Guptas, Palas, Senas, who were Buddhist and Hindus.
From the 13th century A.D. the Buddhist and Hindus were swamped by the flood of Muslim invaders and the tide of Islam upto l8th century. Sometimes there were independent rulers like the Hussain Shahi and llyas Shahi dynasties while at other times they ruled on behalf of the imperial seat of Delhi.
From 15th century the Europeans, namely; Portuguese, Dutch, French and British traders exerted an economic influence over the region. British political rule over the region began in 1757 A.D.when the last Muslim ruler of Bengal was defeated at Palassey. After the end of the British rule In1947 the country was partitioned into India and Pakistan. Present Bangladesh became the Eastern Wing of the then Pakistan. But the movement for autonomy for East Pakistan started within a couple of years because of linguistic and cultural difference and economic disparity between the two wings. The seeds of independence were sown through the Language Movement of 1952 to recognize Bangla as a state language. Ultimately then, the East Pakistan emerged as a sovereign and independent state of Bangladesh in 1971 after nine month-long war of Liberation (starting on 26 March 1971) under the leadership of the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Virtual Bangladesh : Politics
Political Parties Bangladesh's political scene has been tumultuous since independence. Periods of democratic rule have been interrupted by coups, martial law, and states of emergency. There is a proverb in Bangla which loosely translates into: If you have two Bengali's you will have three political parties. This is kind of evidenced in the existence of over 100 political parties. Most of these are small, fringe parties formed mostly by a small coterie of like minded intellectuals or politicians who usually have broken away from larger groupings. There is a singular lack of tolerance in the political system where the major opposition parties are often at violent loggerheads. While Bangladesh is a parliamentary democracy with reasonably free and fair elections, opposition to government policies is often displayed through violent demonstrations and enforced strikes ( hartals ). This is irrespective of which party is in power. In recent years the major opposition parties have boycotted parliamentary sessions.

Education and Cultural Activity
Bangladesh lacks sufficient numbers of schools and cultural institutions, even though facilities were increased substantially in the 1970s.
Education
Public education in Bangladesh generally follows the model established by the British prior to 1947. Primary school education is free, but at least one-third of all children are not enrolled in school. Poor school attendance is a major reason for a literacy rate of only 35 per cent for Bangladeshis aged 15 and older. In the period 1990 to 1991, the country had about 48,140 primary schools, with a total annual enrolment of some 13 million pupils, and about 9,700 secondary schools, with a combined yearly enrolment of about 3.6 million. Bangladesh has several universities, the largest of which is the University of Dhaka (1921). Others include Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (1962) and Jahangirnagar University (1970), both in Dhaka; the Bangladesh Agricultural University (1961) in Mymensingh; the University of Chittagong (1966); and the University of Rajshahi (1953). Colleges include the Bangladesh College of Textile Technology (1950) in Dhaka, and the Chittagong Polytechnic Institute (1962). In the period 1990 to 1991, the country's colleges and universities together enrolled more than 767,000 students.

Community Ecotourism
at it's very best!
Get off the beaten track, interact with indigenous and tribal folk to experience and learn about their unique completely nonviolent culture and lifestyle. These are 'people-meet-people' encounters at their very best. Our tours tread softly respecting the environment and culture while fully enjoying the natural ambiance of this charming, undiscovered and often neglected region. We are the only eco or cultural tour group in the country. Float down shimmering rivers in wooden country boats, trek through lush forests to discover hidden Mru villages on verdant hilltops. After lounging on palm-fringed beaches, take a quaint country launch to explore ancient Buddhist and Hindu temples on offshore islands in the Bay of Bengal. These and many more options allow you to experience a Bangladesh that few people would imagine. Your homestays and lasting friendships with the local and indigenous people may be the most memorable part of your genuine eco-adventure. We excel, as we love and know this region well and live among its people. We wish to share with you a rare and exceptional experience that you will cherish forever. You will tour in very small groups of two to six, enough to have fun and make friends, yet small enough to be flexible and minimize impact on the traditional cultures and the environment. These are true 'community-ecotourism' and ' people meeting people' experiences.
