PEOPLE
Cameroon's estimated 250 ethnic groups form five large regional-cultural groups: western highlanders (or grassfielders), including the Bamileke, Bamoun, and many smaller entities in the northwest (est. 38% of population); coastal tropical forest peoples, including the Bassa, Douala, and many smaller entities in the Southwest (12%); southern tropical forest peoples, including the Ewondo, Bulu (subgroup of Beti), Fang (subgroup of Beti), Maka and Pygmies (officially called Bakas) (18%); predominantly Islamic peoples of the northern semi-arid regions (the Sahel) and central highlands, including the Fulani, also known as Peuhl in French (14%); and the "Kirdi", non-Islamic or recently Islamic peoples of the northern desert and central highlands (18%). The people concentrated in the southwest and northwest provincesaround Buea and Bamendause standard English and "pidgin," as well as their local languages. In the three northern provincesAdamaoua, north, and far northeither French or Fulfulde, the language of the Fulani, is widely spoken. Elsewhere, French is the principal second language, although pidgin and some local languages such as Ewondo, the dialect of a Beti clan from the Yaounde area, also are widely spoken.

1.0 The Beginnings
B Colonialism thus gave birth to a new type of nationhood — a nationhood in which the natives surrendered their ethnic loyalties for those of the colonising power. This involved the acquisition and application of the Western notions of nationism and nationalism. Nationism denotes governance while nationalism denotes the patriotic feelings one has for one’s nation. In both governance and patriotism, language poses a problem. Governance requires, according to Fasold, “communication both within the governing institutions and between government and the people” (1984: 3). The people who were to be governed or who were being governed were illiterate and diverse. They needed to be educated and united. The need for the language of governance, that of education and national cohesion engendered the desire for an official language (OL) — a prestigious, bias-free highly efficient language capable of handling the functional load of governance, trade, modern religion and diplomacy. Only the colonising languages satisfied these requirements. They were therefore imposed as the official languages. 1.1 Indigenous Languages Under the Canopy

Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition This is a list of names of ethnic group Ethnicity is the cultural characteristics that connect a particular group or groups of people to each other. "Ethnicity" is sometimes used as a euphemism for "race", or as a synonym for minority group. While ethnicity and race are related concepts, the concept of ethnicity is rooted in the idea of societal groups, marked especially by shared nationality, tribal afilliation, religious faith, shared language, or cultural and traditional origins and backgrounds. Whereas race is rooted in the idea of biological classification of homo sapiens to subspecies according to morphological features such as skin color or facial characteristics.

EVANGELISTS IN THE central African country of Cameroon can now clearly see their progress in reaching their countrymen with the good news of Jesus Christ. Mission BINAM, an indigenous ministry dedicated to reaching the largely animistic peoples of western Cameroon, hopes to plant a church within each of the 129 Bamileke villages. They recently sent two of their leaders, Rev. Alain Bouwa and Harold Wafo, to participate in GMI’s Visiting Trainee program. In our offices, working side by side with GMI mission cartographers, they learned how to systematically map the whole Bamileke area, consisting of 14 different ethno-linguistic groups. They developed detailed maps showing the villages, principal towns, and language areas of western Cameroon. In addition, they created large wall maps displaying where they are working, and where the greatest spiritual needs are.

Project Summary
The project aims to establish the basis for international recognition, conservation and sustainable management of Globally Important Ingenious Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) and their associated landscapes, biodiversity, knowledge systems and cultures throughout the world. Specific action programmes will be developed in 5-10 pilot sites/ systems, as well as activities to leverage global, regional and national policy and institutional support.
Heritage for the Future

In many countries specific agricultural systems and landscapes have been created, shaped and maintained by generations of farmers and herders based on diverse species and their interactions and using locally adapted, distinctive and often ingenious combinations of management practices and techniques.
Building on dynamic local knowledge and experience, these ingenious agricultural systems reflect the evolution of humanity and its profound harmony with nature. They have resulted not only in outstanding aesthetic beauty, maintenance of globally significant agricultural biodiversity, resilient ecosystems and valuable cultural inheritance but, above all, in the sustained provision of multiple goods and services, food and livelihood security and quality of life.

Cultural Cameroon Dance Fables Dishes Music ... Art THE CAMEROON CULTURE The microcosm of Africa's culture Cameroon has rightly been described as the "microcosm" of Africa. On its territory are found cohabiting, mingling and intermingling all the major cultures and traditions of sub-Saharan Africa, namely:
  • the Bantu cultures of the forest, highland and great lakes regions, not leaving out those of southern Africa etc, the Sudano-Sahelian cultures of the grassfield savannas, the Adamawa plateaux, the sandy plains and hot regions of the Sahel as well as all the intermediate varieties or "shades" such as the nomadic and pygmy cultures.
A quick overview of Cameroon's cultural landscape sprawling from the Atlantic coast to Lake Chad makes it possible to distinguish and better highlight a number of major cultural spheres, each with its own original and specific features. These include the coastal region, the Bantu forest region, the grassfields and the northern region. The coastal or sawa culture Cameroon's coast stretches over close to 400km from Rio del Rey on the western border with Nigeria to Campo near the border with Gabon and Equatorial Guinea and is inhabited by such peoples as the Dualas, Bakweris, Bakokos and Batangas all of whom belong to the coastal Sawa Culture.
