22. Shall We Dance?
Modern developments in ballroom dancing, and ways this method can help the Ballroom dancer
http://alexandertechnique.com/articles/ballroom
Shall We Dance? Ballroom Dancing and the Benefits of the Alexander Technique by Jennifer Mizenko Social Ballroom Dance has made a tremendous come back in the past decade and promises to continue in popularity into the next millennium. People of all ages are returning to partner dances such as swing, waltz, tango and many others. Not only are they returning to these dances they are adding their own twists and steps, making the dances of their own time period and are breaking down rules and barriers that have prohibited change in the competitive ballroom world. There are many theories concerning why ballroom dance has returned to the popular masses. I believe this resurgence has to do with reevaluating relationships and courtships at the end of the millennium. The joys and fears of a society are always expressed through their social dance. During the Roaring Twenties in America, we see the emergence of feminism and the influence of African Americans in the Charleston, through the separation of partners and the use of isolations and poly rhythmic movements. In the 1940's, the energy and desperation of the young G.I. going of to war explodes in his one last Lindy Hop at the U.S.O. canteen. The 1960's and early 70's partners separate again, as America's youth questions authority, explores free love and practices communal living. Today, partners are coming back together on the dance floor. After decades of free love and living with the consequences Americans are making a new commitment to monogamy. The transmission of sexually transmitted diseases proliferated during the 1970's and 80's. We now live in an age where unprotected sexual contact can threaten an individual's life. As a result, people are taking more time to get to know their potential partner's history and background. The resurgence of social ballroom dance reflects an attempt by today's youth to practice Grandma and Grandpa's courtship rituals, in hopes of getting to know their partner better and avoid meaningless liaisons.

25. Books On Ballroom Dancing
Comprehensive list of books on ballroom dancing. Also includes books on swing and Latin dancing, as well as history of partner dance. Books on ballroom dancing.

Books on Ballroom Dancing
About this list
This list contains books on or about ballroom dancing, including Latin American dacnes, Swing, and the so-called nightclub dances such as the Hustle. This list includes books on dancing that, for the most part, appeared after 1970. While this cutoff date may seem somewhat arbitrary, it means that most of these books are either still in print, or can be found in major libraries. Social dancing changes with time; older books on dancing are of interest mainly to the historian and not to the practitioner of dancing. Moreover, the dancing boom of the 50's and 60's led to the production of a great many forgettable low-budget paperbacks, whose authors were neither competent dancers nor teachers. If you are interested in a comprehensive list of older books, I recommend searching the library of congress catalogues A few older books do appear in this list. They either have exceptional historical value, such as the book written by the Castles and another by Arthur Murray, or are unique in some way and assumed to have some redeeming value. Universal Ballroom Dance Music Listings
These pages are designed primarily to help assemble collections of music suitable for ballroom and related dances. Feel free to make comments and suggestions. Many of the dances in these lists are not at any strict or official tempo. It is a good idea to know the standard tempo of a dance before picking music off these lists. You can find recommended tempo information from the the USBDA rulebook (see section 3.5 - Music Tempi), Dance Me Tonight Tempo page George Lindholm's Tempo page , the International Dance Sport Federation . Note that samba, polka and paso doble tempi are given in measures per minute with beats per measure while most of the other dances have 4 beats per measure (except waltzes, which are 3 beats per measure). You can look at lists of dances sorted by list compiler or by dance type For ballroom bands (in the U.S. only, I think), check out the National Ballroom and Entertainment Association For pop music, if you know a song/artist/album and want to get more information about it, check out Bob Lafleur's Music Page . You may be able to find the number of beats per minute for a given song at INFINITIY's BPM-List . There is also an extremely extensive list of song lyrics on line If you're interested in Big Band Music, check out the

SYDNEY
SOCIAL DANCING
Social dances are held regularly at clubs, studios and civic centres nearly every night of the week somewhere in Sydney (see list below). A social dancer needs to be able to dance easily with a variety of partners, and to know enough steps to travel around the floor and to negotiate the problems of corners and other dancers. Knowledge of 3 - 6 steps in each of Waltz, Quickstep, Rhythm, Cha Cha, Rumba and Jive are usually sufficient. Many Socials also include sequence dances, such as New Vogue , and Old Time , in which everyone does the same steps at the same time. Social dancers may find it useful to know some of these, such as the Merrilyn , the Barn Dance , the Pride of Erin , the La Bomba , and Gypsy Tap Dress is usually tidy but informal, except that special dancing shoes are advisable. These are light and flexible, with an appropriate sole and heel to make dancing more comfortable.

By Rhythm - My Favourites By Rhythm - "Nonstrict" only By Rhythm Recommended ... Tempos Welcome to my Ballroom Dance Music web site. Here you'll find all the information I've collected over the years regarding ballroom dance music (both "strict" and "non-strict"). The information gathered here comes from my own experience as a competitor and from attending various completions, from various suppliers, and from articles in rec.arts.dance . The ratings/comments on various songs are my own and that of others (primarily that of Jay Dusenbury from his lists posted several years ago). Due to my own dancing experience, the information is oriented towards International Standard and Latin so you may not always agree with my classification/ratings of various tracks :-) I wish to thank Andy Fortuna Ballroom Blitz Music , and Pro Media Musik for giving me permission to make audio samples of their albums available on my site (just follow the animated audio icon). The information provided on these pages reflect my own opinion and that of other people around the world. If you do decide to purchase a album based on what you found here, make sure that you listen to it first. Your opinion may vary (do let me know in that case so that I can add your opinion). I am not responsible for any purchases that you make based on information found on my site. So there :-)
