from Dr. Louis Grivetti, the project's compiler:
This year, 1996, marks the centennial celebration of the modern Olympic movement. In this spirit of celebration we acknowledge and recognize the names and publications of more than 50,000 historical and contemporary scholars, linked by the thread of a united, common interest in athletics, sport, and recreation. Athletics, games, leisure pursuits, physical education, play activities, and sports lie at the junction between the humanities, social sciences, and biological-medical sciences. While athletic activities most likely had their origin in military training, it is difficult in modern times to separate each theme: athletics from games, games from leisure pursuits and physical education, physical education from play, play from recreation, or recreation from sports. During past and present centuries research on human athletics, games, play, recreation, and sports has been conducted by a broad range of scientists, whether dietitians, nutritionists, physiologists, or physicians. Research on these themes also has been conducted by a broad range of scholars representing the humanities and social sciences, whether anthropologists, artists, classicists, dancers, economists, geographers, historians, musicians, psychologists, social theorists, or sociologists.

How the Olympic Games began
Nearly 3,000 years of Olympic history

The Olympics first started nearly 3,000 years ago in Ancient Greece. The ancient Greek civilization enjoyed many sports—including running, boxing and wrestling—because they believed physical activity and competition were very important. Every Greek boy was expected to participate in sports, because the Greeks believed the skills they learned in sports would make them better warriors.
In honour of Zeus
The ancient Greeks also believed religion was very important. Zeus was their greatest god. The ancient Greeks built a shrine to honour Zeus in the Valley of Olympia. Greeks gathered at the shrine to play their favourite sports as part of their religious ceremonies.
In 776 B.C. the ancient Greeks first recorded the results from their sporting events held in honour of Zeus. Every four years after that these Games were held, and because they took place in the Valley of Olympia, they became known as the Olympic Games.

The Renaissance of Hot-Air Ballooning
The history of ballooning and man's fascination with flight is certainly an incredible one. Historians have put forward theories that the earliest form of a hot air balloon was actually made by the ancient Nazca civilisation of Peru over 2000 years ago. The main evidence is a piece of pottery found in Lima which unmistakably displays a picture of a hot air balloon. The balloon was of a simple design and made of a non-porous material in a tetrahedral shape. Below the envelope was a type of hammock in which the aeronaut/s would have been carried.
The balloon, which was tethered to the ground, would have been filled with smoke from a fire. Once the envelope was fully inflated with hot air the ropes would have been cut and the balloon would have ascended rapidly. The balloon may have reached heights of up to 1500 feet or more and as the air cooled it would have floated gradually to Earth.
This may explain the detailed stone piles laid out on the Peruvian Nazca Plain over a 200 square mile area, the intricate patterns only able to be fully viewed from the air.

Sport in South Africa It’s the national religion. Transcending race, politics or language group, sport unites the country - and not just the male half of it. When a South African team wins, a cacophony of hooting, cheering, banging of dustbin lids, trumpeting on cow horns and fireworks reverberates across the largest cities. The national adrenaline goes into overdrive. Maybe even the GDP goes up. Just don’t look too cheerful on the Monday morning after a dismal sporting weekend! Sport, like no other South African institution, has shown it has the power to heal old wounds. When the South African team, the Springboks, won the Rugby World Cup on its home turf in 1995, Nelson Mandela donned the No 6 shirt of the team’s captain – Francois Pienaar, a white Afrikaner – and the two embraced in a spontaneous gesture of racial reconciliation which melted hearts around the country. A single moment, and 400 years of colonial strife and bitterness … suddenly seemed so petty. It wasn’t always that way. During the apartheid era, racially segregated sport was one of the most divisive issues. There was the case of Cape Town cricketer Basil D’Oliviera, a world-class cricket talent who just happened to be born at the wrong time in the wrong place, with the wrong colour of skin. Disqualified from local first-class cricket on the grounds of race, D’Oliviera went to live in England in 1960, becoming one of the stars of the English team. He was selected for a 1968 tour of South Africa. The South African government barred him – an act of folly that offended even the crustiest British conservatives, and turned this country into a sporting pariah.
