Introduction
The Competitions Club of the British Balloon and Airship Club is the body responsible for the organisation and administration of Competition Ballooning in the UK. As such, it is involved with a number of other bodies, both in the UK and Internationally. The following information gives some brief details as to the organisation and inter-relationships of these bodies.
Organisational Diagram
The FAI
The Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI), or International Aeronautic Federation, is the international authority which looks after all the sporting activities which take place in the air. It was founded in 1905 to promote the new science and sport of manned flight, which at the time consisted mostly of ballooning. The FAI was formed because the International Olympic Committee was not interested in having aerial sports, such as ballooning, as part of its activities. It is a non-governmental and non-profit making international organisation with the basic aim of furthering aeronautical and astronautical activities worldwide. Much of the work for which the FAI is nominally responsible is devolved to the various National Aero Clubs for matters relating to each Nation; and the various particular Airsport commissions for matters relating to individual airsports. The FAI web site is at: http://www.fai.org/

By the Numbers: Are Flyers ready to ground Beflour?
WebPosted Thu, 22 Apr 2004 18:45:58 EDT BY BLAIR SANDERSON FOR CBC SPORTS ONLINE - Were the Flyers that good in their 4-1 rout of the defending Stanley Cup champion Devils in round one - or was New Jersey just a shell of its former self? Philadelphia made a Devils team renowned for its stingy defence look like a rag-tag bunch in its own end, ballooning New Jersey goalie Martin Brodeur's statistics from their usual microscopic low numbers in the process. Will the Flyers be able to solve Toronto goalie Ed Belfour in Round 2 of the playoffs? (CP Photo) A three-time Cup winner with the Devils, former Vezina trophy winner and Olympic champion, Brodeur, had just a .902 save percentage against the Flyers. He has never had a lower percentage than that in any previous regular season, and has only twice been below that in 11 playoff appearances. His 2.61 goals against average was the second worst of his playoff career, and over half a goal higher than his 2.03 regular season mark.

    The Girls' Games
    Summary:
They were promoted as the Green Games and the Athletes’ Games. They’ve turned out to be the Girls’ Games. More women are participating in the Sydney Olympics than ever before - a long haul since the first modern Olympics banned women from competing.
ANITA TEDDER, co-author of ‘A Proper Spectacle: Women Olympians 1900-1936’, looks back on the early history and controversies surrounding Olympic events for women.
And on this centenary of women in the Olympics, DEBBIE SIMMS, the manager of the Women and Sport Unit of the Australian Sports Commission, discusses what’s driving our perceptions of female athleticism now. And will it make any difference to women’s sport beyond the Olympics?
Plus, Australian sportswomen competing in water polo, beach volleyball, basketball and other Olympic events talk about their own challenges and successes.

    THEME
Amanda Smith: Welcome to The Sports Factor’s final program from the International Broadcast Centre here at Olympic Park, Homebush Bay. And it’s an all-girl program today, in celebration of Sydney 2000 being the centenary year of women’s participation in the Olympic Games.
Sydney, the Green Games, the Athletes’ Games, Oceania’s Games. But they’ve also emerged as the Girls’ Games. More women are competing in these Olympic Games than ever before. And many of the outstanding and memorable performances have come from female athletes. As I’m sure you know, the very first modern Olympics, in 1896, banned women from competing. And in a moment, we’ll go back to the early history and controversies that have surrounded female participation in the Olympics. First though, a couple of the memorable moments, so far at these Games, from Australian sportswomen, past and present.

    51. Opinion: Is Chess A Game Or A Sport?
caving arm wrestling life saving yoga ballooning tugof for certain… let s hope English sports councils are not on the committee determining olympic activities
    http://www.thechessdrum.net/newsbriefs/2004/NB_Chess.html
Opinion: Is Chess a Game or a Sport?
In England's Nottingham Evening Post , there is an interesting story concerning the age-old debate of whether chess is merely a game, or a sport to be classified with other professional sports. Sports England had turned down a request by the British Chess Federation (BCF) for declaration as a sport.
What is at stake here is if chess is classified as a sport, the BCF can have a chance to receive funding it needs to organize tournaments, train players, and travel. "Our top players aren't developing properly because of this lack of cash and, in some cases, are having to go back to work because they can't afford to play full-time," says David Levens , marketing director of the BCF.
Steve Bradley of the Sports England stands by the decision and states, "If we opened up the sports review event to chess players, we'd basically be saying that anyone could come along." That is certainly true if there were no respectable criteria. While England's accepted definitions for "sport" offer no clarification, what is strange are the activities that Sports England has qualified as "sports." To show you how horrible the council is, below are some of the declared "sports" (don't laugh):
    skipping
    baton twirling
    caving
    arm wrestling
    life saving
    yoga
ballooning tug-of-war skater/street hockey snooker (billiards)
These are among the 112 sports recognized by the Sport England council. One thing is for certain… let's hope English sports councils are not on the committee determining Olympic activities. If London is ever the Olympic host, we may have to watch a sport like "synchronized yoga," or "power skipping." The criteria of the "sports" above is that they possess some physical activity… regardless of how mundane it is. Perhaps we can offer such arguments in support of chess:

    THE OLYMPICS
Many residents of Nagano have been reluctant hosts from the start, but the show must go on
By Audrey Snee / Nagano O LYMPIC ORGANIZERS GATHERED AT Nagano's famed Zenkoji temple on New Year's Day and prayed for snow. The 18th Winter Olympics were weeks away, and that spoiler El Niño seemed determined to deliver balmy weather and give Japanese something else to fret about. But the gods came through and then some. The snow began falling . . . and falling and falling. Games organizers stopped praying and gave thanks. They would breathe even easier once Hawaiian-born sumo champ Akebono ritually rid the games of evil spirits at the Feb. 7 opening ceremony. The jitters are understandable. Nagano, a sleepy provincial backwater, is hosting games that are the largest, most expensive (at $10.5 billion, six times the cost of the Atlanta Olympics) and high-tech of the 20th Century. With 3,500 athletes and officials taking part, not to mention some one million sports fans, the streets of Nagano will be mobbed with gaijin, or foreigners. That does not sit comfortably in a traditional city where women don kimonos in the iciest conditions and people still eat raw horse meat. Residents worry that once the hoopla dies down, carriage-loads of Tokyoites will descend on their city, now a 90-minute ride from the capital, courtesy of a $1-billion bullet train built specially for the games. Many are fleeing town during the Olympics. Others, like Tachibana Miyako, signed up as volunteers. But she allows "people are not in good spirits."

So you're looking for sports, right? Presumably that's why you're slumming in this part of the web site. As opposed to the section that deals with bombs. Or the area that covers catastrophes.
Fear not. You've come to the right place. (And if you're actually jonesing for catastrophic bombs, well, skip on over to Arts. Look for the capsule review on "Gigli.")
Don't be shy. Flip us open. Ruffle on through. On any given day, we have the scoop on large men chasing small leather balls. Small men on large horses chasing each other. Tall women tossing spheres through a ring. Short women kicking balls into a net. Pajama-clad men swinging sticks. Colorfully adorned drivers steering colorfully decaled cars in a seemingly endless series of circles.
All that, and not a single word on the circus. Which, come to think of it, might be a significant oversight.
In an era that embraces televised strongman contests and a televised Stuart Scott, there's no question that the sports world belongs under the big top. Particularly if Don King is involved. That said, does the circus qualify as a sport? And if not, then what about elephant polo? Or unicycle hockey? Or trampoline?

National Meteorological and Hydrological Services are vital to environmentally sustainable sports
Weather and climate are important factors in the social and economic development of any country. Nowadays, human activities in many sectors such as agriculture, transport, energy and even organized recreational activities are constantly affected by the vagaries of weather and climate. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO), together with the national Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) of its 181 Member countries, have long provided athletes, organizers and spectators of major sporting events, basic weather and climate information that is essential to their successful outcome. Indeed, advance knowledge of meteorological conditions as well as the expertise of meteorologists and hydrologists have been instrumental in the planning and preparation of organized sports activities. In the year celebrating the 100th anniversary of the modern Olympics, WMO has selected "Meteorology in the Service of Sports" as the theme for World Meteorological Day 1996 (WMD'96). This theme focuses public attention on the role which meteorology and in particular the NMHSs play in supporting the world of sports. It is therefore timely and appropriate that a new partnership has evolved between WMO and the International Olympic Committee (IOC), with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two organizations to take place on the eve of WMD'96 on 22 March. This partnership will form the basis of future collaboration until the year 2000 and beyond, and will be beneficial to the organizers of the Summer and Winter Games in Atlanta 1996, Nagano 1998 and Sydney 2000.
