In 1891, the legendary choreographer Marius Petipa commissioned Tchaikovsky to write the music for the Nutcracker Ballet. In 1892, the first showing of the Nutcracker took place at the Mariinsky Theatre of Russia, home of the Kirov Ballet. The Nutcracker made its way to Western Europe in the 1930’s and to America by 1940, performed by Ballet Russe. The first American full length Nutcracker was performed by the San Francisco Ballet , choreographed by W. Christensen . The Nutcracker has since become an annual Holiday tradition. Ballet
Ballroom Bellydance ... Ballet Performances Miss Christy's Dance Class DVD
Welcome to Christy Curtis's dance classes for kids. Learn along with these other students in the video lessons for tap, jazz, and ballet. Each segment is helpfully repetitive and, unlike a real class, there's always the replay button! Perfect for parents trying to gauge their youngster's interest in dance before making an investment in classes or to those who want to share the joy of dancing. 102 minutes.
Jazz: Perfect for boys and girls! The girls wear traditional leotards, but the baggy clothes that the boys wear have turned this video into a "hip hop" learning experience for all ages too! Miss Christy teaches the basic steps, a few at a time, slowly at first and progressively speeding it up for more of a challenge. In not time, your children will be DANCIN! Tap: At any age, learning to tap dance is lots of fun and great exercise, but for children ages 6 and up, it is also a wonderful way to develop coordination and balance, rhythm, speed, and to develop or improve timing, strength, and agility. Tap is the all-American form of musical theatre expression. Ballet: This program is structured just like a formal ballet class, featuring exercises at the barre, port-de-bras, center, and traveling moves. Whether learning, practicing, or just for plain fun, this is a program your future ballerina will watch over and over again because Christy makes ballet fun and easy!

100 (more or less) Common Ballet Terms Defined
This release Mar. 6, 2004.
Notes:
  • This dictionary is introductory only and doesn't pretend to be the last word in scholarly accuracy (although that's what I've tried for). Don't use it to win prizes or to pass examinations. If you need authoritative definitions, two of the standard references for ballet terms are (a) Kersley and Sinclair and especially (b) Grant . These are both excellent. If you're a dancer, you should have Grant; if you're a balletomane, you should have Kersley and Sinclair; if you're a maniac, get both. Rhonda Ryman's dictionary is based on the practice of the Royal Academy of Dancing. For Russian technique, Vaganova is very useful. Warren provides photographs of dancers executing the steps. In addition, there's now a CD ROM available that shows dancers executing steps. The brief summaries that follow are no substitute for any of these and are not intended to be. They're intended to provide quick answers, not detailed instructions for executing steps. This list is also not intended to be exhaustive. (Grant has more than a thousand entries.) In that case, why this list? People seem to have a craving for looking things up on the Web that they could find more easily in a bookand I'm satisfying that craving.
