G lobal F ocus: TALK ABOUT BALKANS HISTORY
    Tom Emmert
Live! Centuries ago, Kosovo was the center of the Serbian empire and site of its most sacred churches and monasteries. Tom Emmert, a professor of history at Gustavos Adolphus College in Minnesota, joined us April 2, 1999 to discuss the historical significance of the southern Serbian province and the Balkans region. Read the transcript below. Emmert has a doctorate degree in Balkan history from Stanford University, and has written two books on the subject: "Serbian Golgotha: Kosovo, 1389" (Columbia: 1990) and "Kosovo: Legacy of a Medieval Battle" (Minnesota, 1991).
Washingtonpost.com: Good morning everyone, and welcome Tom. Can you explain what the word 'Balkans' and 'Balkanization' means, and the role its geography and location has played in the compartmentalization of this region? Tom Emmert: Balkan is a turkish word for mountain and it technically refers to a mountain range which divides Bulgaria east and west. Its modern derivation has emerged in recent years. Balkanization means to divide into smaller states that are hostile to each other. The geography is important it tends to be a ammoniatingmountainous region and the people tend to be isolated from each other which certainly encourages this compartmentalization.

History. Since peoples. In spite of these efforts, many challenges remain in Bosnia and Herzegovina and, indeed, in the entire Balkan region.

AND OR Home Organization EFP- Balkans ... Board of Directors - History - Program reach Partners Impact History Since the signing of the Dayton Peace Accords which ended the war in 1995, a process of social, economic and political recovery has been taking place in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH). This process, mainly led by the international community, has channeled financial and technical assistance into the main areas of the physical and, to a lesser extent, psychosocial and educational reconstruction of the country and its peoples. In spite of these efforts, many challenges remain in Bosnia and Herzegovina and, indeed, in the entire Balkan region. The underlying prejudice and tension between groups remain widespread and continues to erupt in acts of violence against each other, threatening to destabilize the region. In Bosnia itself, extreme nationalism has not yet been excised from the body politics. Broadly speaking, a culture of peace has not yet been established. As a result of this pilot project, the Education for Peace program has received full recognition and support from the BiH government, local communities and the international community in Bosnia and Herzegovina. After a year of operation, teachers, students and government leaders requested that the program be introduced throughout the country. In response, starting in September 2003, the program is being extended to 100 schools across BiH and initiated in other communities worldwide.

Preface Complete list of lectures Next lecture One can't understand the Balkans without understanding its ethnic groups, and one can't understand the ethnic groups and their history without knowing the influence of the region's geography.
Even the geographic extent of the "Balkan" region is a matter of controversy. Many scholars, especially those writing in the Cold War era, have included only the Communist states and linked them with Czechoslovakia, Poland and East Germany, while omitting Greece and ignoring Turkey and the Ottoman era. Other historians exclude Hungary, Croatia and other Habsburg lands, because of their "central" European character, supposedly contrary to Balkan themes. But the presence of contradictory themes is itself characteristically Balkan.
For the purposes of this course of lectures, the Balkan area includes Greece, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Romania, Albania and Hungary. Most of this area was once under Ottoman Turkish rule; the rest under the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The lectures will not deal with all of the Ottoman Empire, which extended into Asia and Africa, or other former Habsburg lands such as Czechoslovakia and parts of Poland.
    Physical geography
Balkan geography revolves around three features: the area's situation as a peninsula, its mountains, and its rivers.

    FAQ
Many of the questions asked about this Web site fall into certain groups. This FAQ may be helpful to readers, since sometimes I cannot reply to email right away. 1. Q: Will there ever be a "Lecture 26" on the Kosovo crisis of 1999?
    • A: Probably not, for three reasons. First, Lecture 25 (on the civil war in Bosnia) already illustrates how hard it is to write "history" in the absence of research sources in depth. Second, my current job (as a librarian) does not leave me enough free time to properly research this complicated event. Third, other sources are available.
    2. Q: How do I include a citation from these lectures in a footnote or bibliography?
    • A: A variety of Web sites offer advice about citing Web resources. There are also printed reference guides, including Nancy Crane's Electronic Styles: A Handbook for Citing Electronic Information (1996), and the newest edition of the Chicago Manual of Style . Based on those sources, Lecture 1 could be cited this way, as an example:

The following selection mixes general histories of the Balkans with studies concentrating on particular regions. The Balkans by Mark Mazower
Slim, cheap, but incredibly useful, this book is the perfect introduction to Balkan history. Mazower takes a broad sweep, discussing the geographical, political, religious and ethnic forces that have been active in the region, while destroying many 'western' preconceptions. The book also delves into some broader discussions, such as continuity with the Byzantine world. The Balkans 1804 - 1999: Nationalism, War and the Great powers by Misha Glenny

    The Environs of Korca
The villages around Korca are a synonim of history .Those villages make delightful excursions . The villages are generally on or near the Plain, rather than in the mountains thus it is possible to reach them with taxi from the city. This area is very mixed and the visitor will meet an extraordinary diversity of people within a small geographical area.Albanian language is universally understood , while in some quite small villages it is possible to hear as many as four languages spoken in a community of a few hundred people. The hilltown of Voskopoja is 21km near Korca. This city is one of the msot evocative and atmospheric places in this part of the Balkans, with Orthodox churches of the highest architectural and historical interest, remarkable fresco paintings, and the remains of a small urban settlement . Until mid-18C was Voskopoja one of the msot flourishing and prosperous cities in the region. This region is largely inhabited by Vlach shepherds (a small minority in Albania). History of Voskopoja :
Voskopoja first appears as a place of any importance in medieval chronicles in the 14C. It was then known by the Greek name of Moschopolis. In the 15C the region developed as a trade centre. It grew rapidly, and was particulary prosperous after the Venetian expansion in the Balkans, acting as an entreport between Venice and Constantipole.
