Bahrain
The State of Bahrain is an island city-state in the Persian Gulf off the coast of Saudi Arabia. Proximity and comparatively liberal trade and social policies have made Bahrain an attractive second address for wealthy Saudi Arabians and their businesses. Although oil was the foundation of its economy, Bahrain has developed into an international banking and business center. Along with the United Arab Emirates, it is one of the principal locations for the regional business offices of foreign companies. Bahrain is an emerging communications nexus with ambitions to become the principal connection point for regional telecommunications with the outside world. Infrastructure investment is a key government policy. There is also a U.S. naval base in Bahrain, headquarters of the Commander, U.S. FIFTH Fleet, the mainstay of the U.S. naval presence in the region. There have been sporadic demonstrations and some public violence in Bahrain over the past several years, principally on the part of the sizable Shi’ite community, which represents the lower income sector of Bahraini society. This violence, which has resulted in government repression and some suspension of civil liberties, has been targeted both at the Western presence in Bahrain and the restrictive policies of the Bahraini government, which the Shi’ites believe is discriminatory. The Bahraini government has accused Iran of inciting the violence as a reaction to the U.S. naval presence and in an attempt to destabilize the Bahrain government with a view toward building Iranian influence on the Western side of the Gulf.

Introduction
Bahrain's small size and central location among Persian Gulf countries require it to play a delicate balancing act in foreign affairs among its larger neighbors. Possessing minimal oil reserves, Bahrain has turned to petroleum processing and refining, and has transformed itself into an international banking center. The new amir is pushing economic and political reforms, and has worked to improve relations with the Shi'a community. In 2001, the International Court of Justice awarded the Hawar Islands, long disputed with Qatar, to Bahrain.

Senior School: Geography Download our Key Stage 3 Scheme of Work (Requires Acrobat Reader DESCRIPTION We are a lively, enthusiastic and forward thinking department whose aim is to make Geography enjoyable, accessible and relevant to pupils of all ages and abilities. We use a wide variety of teaching techniques ranging from traditional whole class teaching to flexible learning through project work. We always try to supplement the students' geographical experience through use of video, CD ROM and the Internet and we make extensive use of ICT at all levels. Fieldwork is a particularly important part of our curriculum and we make a great deal of use of the local environment in Bahrain as well as having an annual trip to Nepal. This is the highlight of the year for the department and we have now enjoyed 3 exciting and demanding treks in the Annapurna region of the Himalayas. The department has a staff of 4 fully qualified specialist teachers each with their own area of expertise at 'A' Level. Examination results are consistently very good indeed and we are proud to expect and achieve the very best from our students. FACILITIES We have a very wide range of resources available to us. The department is fortunate to have it's own suite of 4 rooms each with black out and AV facilities. We have access to a number of computer suites throughout the school and we find that the integration of ICT is a particularly important area of departmental development. At Key Stage 3 we use David Waugh's Key Geography series as a basis for the Geography course supplementing with other texts where appropriate. The core GCSE text is The New Wider World although again we have a wide range of support material in the form of textbooks, videos and CD ROMs The AS and A2 courses are very well resourced and we use specialist texts depending on the topics studied.

REGIONAL GEOGRAPHY The Middle East can be divided into subregions which are the Arabian Peninsula which includes Saudi Arabia and the smaller peripheral countries; the Fertile Crescent which includes the Mediterranean countries eastward to the Tigris and Euphrates, and includes the countries of Lebanon, Syria , Israel, Jordan and Iraq; the non-Arab northern countries of Turkey, Iran, and Afghanistan; and the Northern African countries of Egypt, Libya, Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, and Sudan. go to: The Arabian Peninsula: The Fertile Crescent The Non-Arab North North Africa
THE ARABIAN PENINSULA:
The eight nations flanking the Persian Gulf float on a pool of energy wealth. More than half the world's known oil reserves and one-fifth of the world's natural gas reserves are found here. These energy-rich nations have low populations and little industry, therefore they are willing to sell their resources to other countries. The first oil find in the Persian Gulf came in 1908 (Held 116) and was then developed by a British firm. After World War II, oil exploration by western firms began to intensify as did their interest in the strategic physical location of the region. Disputes grew over the way the wealth from the area's oil was distributed. Governments gave too much to the foreign owned oil companies. Leaders began wanting to gain control over the production and pricing of their nations' resources. The Persian Gulf countries decided that they needed more bargaining power in dealing with the oil firms. In 1960, they formed
