Geography
GEOGRAPHY Geography Bahrain is culturally, politically and economically diverse. The Bahraini people as a whole are exceedingly courteous and welcome guests visiting their country. The Arab countries along the Arabian Gulf form a geographically and culturally distinct sub-entity. These countries also make up the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). The six member states are Kuwait, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates (U.A.E) and the Sultanate of Oman. The population is around 600,000 with the population heavily concentrated in the northern third of the main island and Muharraq. A trip to the National Museum and tourist site information available at the Rec. Center is recommended to get a feel for the country's history and to identify sites of potential interest for you to visit. There are several forts, outstanding museums, beaches and a wildlife sanctuary located on the island.

INTRODUCTION
Background: Bahrain's small size and central location among Persian Gulf countries require it to play a delicate balancing act in foreign affairs among its larger neighbors. Possessing minimal oil reserves, Bahrain has turned to petroleum processing and refining, and has transformed itself into an international banking center. The new amir, installed in 1999, has pushed economic and political reforms, and has worked to improve relations with the Shi'a community. In February 2001, Bahraini voters approved a referendum on the National Action Charter - the centerpiece of the amir's political liberalization program. In February 2002, Amir HAMAD bin Isa Al Khalifa proclaimed himself king. In local elections held in May 2002, Bahraini women were allowed to vote and run for office for the first time.

Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition Location: Southwest Asia Southwest Asia , or West Asia , is the southwestern part of Asia. The region is sometimes considered synonymous with the Middle East, but usually the term Middle East includes North African countries or at least the part of Egypt in North Africa. Geographers that were annoyed with the ambiguity of the term "Middle East" tried to popularize the word "Southwest Asia", but with little success. The term "West Asia" has become the preferred term of use in countries such as India, possibly because of the perceived Eurocentrism of the term "Middle East".

Archipelagoes usually occur in the open sea; less commonly a large land mass may neighbour them. Archipelagos are often volcanic, forming along ocean ridges or hot spots, but there are many other processes involved in their construction, including erosion and deposition. The word comes from the Aegean Sea (Italian Arcipelago ), which literally means "chief sea", from Greek

Geography and Population
Persian Gulf States Table of Contents Bahrain (from the Arabic word for "two seas") comprises an archipelago of thirty-three islands situated midway in the Persian Gulf close to the shore of the Arabian Peninsula. The islands are about twenty-four kilometers from the east coast of Saudi Arabia and twenty-eight kilometers from Qatar. The total area of the islands is about 691 square kilometers, or about four times the size of the District of Columbia. The largest island, accounting for 83 percent of the area, is Bahrain (also seen as Al Bahrayn), which has an extent of 572 square kilometers. From north to south, Bahrain is forty-eight kilometers long; at its widest point in the north, it is sixteen kilometers from east to west. The other islands of significance include Nabi Salah, which is northwest of Sitrah; Jiddah, to the north of Umm an Nasan; and a group of islands, the largest of which is Hawar, near the coast of Qatar. Nabi Salah contains several freshwater springs that are used to irrigate the island's extensive date palm groves. The rocky islet of Jiddah houses the state prison. Hawar and the fifteen small islands near it are the subject of a territorial dispute between Bahrain and Qatar. Hawar is nineteen kilometers long and about oneand onehalf kilometers wide. The other islands are uninhabited and are nesting sites for a variety of migratory birds.
