The Dilmun Civilization (3200 - 1600 B.C.) A holy land, a flourishing civilization and one of the largest ancient necropolises in the world I n Bahrain, a visitor is always surprised by the thousands of graves and burial mounds that extend over 18 miles in successive swells of knolls along the roads here. The tombs lie peacefully between the districts of many new towns. And, in an odd juxtaposition of past and present, oil pipelines which are always built above ground level in Bahrain edge their way alongside the burial mounds. Bahrain is one of the world's largest necropolises with an estimated 170,000 graves, most of which date back to the third and second millenniums B.C. Some people believe that the ancient Egyptians buried their dead here, but archaeologists have discovered vases and jars from Mesopotamia and the Valley of the Indus in the royal tombs of A'ali and in Sar. Although throughout the centuries robbers have stripped the tombs, archaeologists have still been able to find arms, carnelian jewels from the Valley of the Undus, bronze and copper objects. Their contents were the same as the cooper used in Magan in the Sultanate of Oman during the third millennium B.C. Seals from Dilmun were also found, which were imprinted with tales of the merchants' everyday life of the time.

The system was established in 1932 when the government assumed responsibility for operating two preexisting primary schools for boys. Subsequently, separate facilities for girls and various secondary programs were established. Since the 1970s, education has been one of the largest current government expenditures. Despite the intensity of government efforts, however, the literacy rate for adult citizens was only about 75 percent as recently as 1985. The literacy rate for 1990 was estimated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization to be 77 percent for adults (82 percent for males and 69 percent for females). Nevertheless, literacy levels among Bahrainis born since independence in 1971 were high because an estimated 70 percent of primary and secondary school-age children attended school. In the 1986-87 academic year, 88,152 students attended 139 public schools. Education in the public system, which included six-year primary schools, three-year intermediate schools, and three-year secular secondary schools, is free. Students receive supplies, uniforms, meals, and transportation to and from school at no charge. Almost all children in the six- to eleven-year-old age-group attend primary school, and about two-thirds of all twelve- to fourteen-year-olds are enrolled in intermediate schools. However, there was a significant drop-out rate, especially for girls, after the completion of intermediate school. In the 1986-87 academic year, only 41 percent of fifteen- to seventeen-year-olds attended secondary schools.

The initiative, which last October organized a successful week of public education on Arab culture and civilization through a march and an exhibition, has been adopted as a centennial-year project of District 7620. More than 100 Rotarians from the district attended the project launch at the embassy of the Kingdom of Bahrain on 19 April. Through the effort, the district will help rehabilitate a prosthetics center in Basra , Iraq , in collaboration with the nonprofit organization Physicians for Peace. The three Rotary clubs of Bahrain are considering continuing their involvement with the project. District Governor Jim McDiamird and Montgomery Village club president Glen Todd bestowed Paul Harris Fellow recognition on event co-host Sheik Khalifa Ali Al-Khalifa for his contributions toward peace and international understanding as an honorary Rotarian and Bahrain ambassador to the U.S. At the event, Rotary Peace Scholar Arthur Romano presented Ambassadors Al-Khalifa and Rend Al-Rahim of Iraq with a peace pole, symbolizing a wish for lasting peace in their countries.
