OFFICIAL NAME: The Commonwealth of the Bahamas CAPITAL: Nassau SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT: Constitutional Monarchy AREA: 13,935 Sq Km (5,380 Sq Mi) ESTIMATED 2000 POPULATION The Bahamas is a series of long flat coralline limestone islands in the West Atlantic Ocean. There are nearly 700 islands and over 2,000 cays in the archipelago, of which only about 40 islands are inhabited. These islands comprise two oceanic banks, (1.) the Bahama Bank and (2.) the Great Bahama Bank. The island's terrain, for the most part, is low and flat with a few small lakes and mangroves swamps. The shorelines are marked with coral reefs and there are no navigable rivers. Major Cities (pop. est.); Greater Nassau 172,000, Freeport/Lucaya 27,000 (1990). Land Use; forested 32%, pastures 1%, agricultural-cultivated 1%, other 66% (1993). CLIMATE: The Bahamas has a semitropical climate with two seasons. (1.) The winter season from December to April and (2.) the summer season from May to November, with relative humidity ranging from 60 to 100%. Average annual precipitation is 1,320 mm (52 inches) and most rainfall occurs between May to June and September to October. The hurricane season which lasts from June to November does experience gale force winds, although normally wind rarely exceeds 24 kmph (15 mph). Average temperature ranges in Nassau are from 18 to 25 degrees Celsius (64 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit) in February to 24 to 32 degrees Celsius (75 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit) in August. PEOPLE:

Media Back to Countries Index Page The Bahamas The Country Geography: The Bahamas is an archipelago of approximately 700 flat, lowlying islands in the western Atlantic Ocean. It is located between 72° to 79° western geographic longitude and 21° to 27° northern geographic latitude and extends from eighty kilometers east of Florida to eighty kilometers northeast of Cuba. In addition to the United States and Cuba, neighbors of the Bahamas include Haiti and the Turks and Caicos Islands; both are located to the southeast of the Bahamas. The Tropic of Cancer runs through the middle of the archipelago, passing across the lower part of Great Exuma Island and the upper part of Long Island. Although the total area of the archipelago is 13,939 square kilometers (5380 square miles) , the islands are sprawled over an area of approximately 259,000 square kilometers. The islands are surface projections of two oceanic banks, the Little Bahama Bank and the Great Bahama Bank. The highest point is only sixty-three meters above sea level on Cat Island; the island of New Providence, where the capital city of Nassau (77°22' W and 25°03' N) is located, reaches a maximum elevation of only thirty-seven meters.
