    Bahamas Tours Overview
Photo courtesy of Becca Wheeler When Christopher Columbus first set foot in the New World, he did so in the Bahamas (though the exact island he landed on is still a matter of debate). He didn't stay long, however, being intent on finding riches that this group of islands didn't seem to hold. Perhaps he was looking for the wrong things. These days, travelers are rediscovering the Bahamas, and most are quite satisfied with the treasures they find: brilliant turquoise water, sandy beaches, excellent fishing and surroundings that range from swank hotels to secluded coves. Those making landfall in the islands can choose from two distinct experiences. Visitors looking for the standard resort amenities should head to Nassau (on New Providence Island) or Freeport/Lucaya (on Grand Bahama Island). Splashy Nassau, the biggest city and main port, is awash in pink colonial buildings, bustling street markets, five-star resorts and neon-lit casinos. In Freeport/Lucaya, the Bahamas' second-largest port, options range from frolicking with dolphins to perusing duty-free goods in huge shopping complexes (you can gamble there, too). Those more interested in deserted beaches, sailing and a generally slower pace will want to visit some of the many Out Islands, most of which are thinly populated or uninhabited.

    Bimini

Bimini is a group of small islands in the Bahamas. Bimini is only 50 miles east of Miami Beach, Florida. Bimini has three main islands: North Bimini, South Bimini, and East Bimini. These coral islands are small, only 7 miles long and only 200 yards wide at their narrowest. Perched at the west end of the Bahamas Bank, Bimini is surrounded by shallow water (only 20 to 30 feet deep) to the north, south, and east. To the west, the Gulf Stream current flows north through the deep water between Miami and Bimini, where the ocean is over 6000 feet deep. The Gulf Stream brings hundreds of marine animals near to the shores of Bimini. North Bimini is long, flat, and narrow. In this picture you can see the houses and buildings of Alice Town as we fly over the harbor between North Bimini and East Bimini. Notice how clear the water is in the shallow harbor. The shallow calm harbor was a shelter for pirates in the early days of the Caribbean. We're looking out the airplane window toward the west, so the water in the distance is the Gulf Stream, and Miami is just over the horizon in the distance. From the light-colored, shallow water near shore, the depth increases to 80 to 100 feet before dropping into the abyss of the Gulf Stream. Note the darker, deeper water at the bottom of this photograph. The shallow reefs are nurseries for young fish. http://www.bahamasdiving.com/BDAtour/geography.html

    GEOGRAPHY
    Tour Participants:

In many respects the geography is similar, although certainly not identical, from island to island. At one time when the global seas were lower, these islands were part of a large interconnected landmass.
As the Ice Age ended and the seawater held frozen at the polar caps melted, the rising sea level made islands of the higher peaks and created a vast submarine plateau known as the Great Bahama Bank. The highest point in the Bahamas is now just 206 feet at Cat Island and only 5,400 square miles of land remains above sea level.
There are deep oceanic trenches such as the Tongue of the Ocean that plunge to more than 6,000 feet, as well mangrove forests, shallow sand banks, isolated patch reefs, and extensive fringing reefs surrounding Most of the larger islands are typically low in elevation and at least partially rimmed by sugary sand beach. There will be patches of ironshore as well, and the island interior will be thick with casuarina, pine, and palm trees. Some islands like New Providence and Grand Bahama feature well-developed metropolitan centers, and are world-renowned for their banking, casinos, and shopping.
The Out Islands are far more laid-back, and feature small villages where the local populace survives by fishing, a little farming, and of course providing services to the tourists who come to sample their unique pleasures. The Islands of The Bahamas provide subtle contrast, above and below the surface, each offering its own unique rewards for the visiting watersports enthusiast.
