Deutsche Version The Bahamas is an archipelagic state lying about 50 miles off the coast of Florida extending over 750 miles south-easterly along the coast of Cuba to within 60 miles of Hispaniola. Eleuthera The Bahamas derives its name from the Spanish words meaning shallow seas. The waters surrounding The Bahamas are virtually pollution free and are the clearest and most collorful in the world and the islands of The Bahamas boast the spectacular beaches ranging form coral pink to ivory white. Despite its name and large areas of shallow sand beds and reefs, The Bahamas also has some of the deepest waters in the world in an area called "The Tongue of the Ocean" which is located just east of Andros island. These waters are over one mile deep and are utilised for oceanographic research by scientists of the Atlantic Undersea Testing and Evaluation Centre, a joint US/UK research base. The Great Barrier Reef, the third largest in the world, flanks the Tongue of the Ocean. The Gulf Stream, commonly referred to as the "Great Ocean River", borders The Bahamas on the west.
