One Muslim's Reflections on the Bahai Faith
What would lead someone to make a web page presenting a truncated history and his opinions about another religion? I asked myself this question often when engaging this project, and the reason is simple. As a student at Vanderbilt University I became witness to a rather heavy degree of missionary activity by the Bahai Student Association of Vanderbilt . One of my co-workers in the dormitory where I worked as a Resident Adviser repeatedly asked me to attend one of their information sessions and, to appease his insistence, I did. The session consisted of a speaker from the local community who presented an historical overview and some fundamental tenants of the Bahai Faith. Dispersed among these basic teachings were purported innovations that I had been taught as a Muslim. In addition, the speaker made claims about the role of religion which contradict what I believe the fundamental function of religion is or can be. Finally, and perhaps initially most disturbing, the speaker omitted key historical events and twisted others. Included among these assertions were claims that the Bahai Faith was free from denominational splits, that Bahaullah spent forty years incarcerated, that the Bahai Faith was the world's newest religion, that Bahais have historically refrained from political activity, and that Bahaullah practiced monogamy.

History:
Most religious historians believe that the Bahá'í Faith arose from Islam , similar to the way Christianity arose from Judaism . However, many Bahá'í's believe that it is a unique religion with no historical connections to other faiths. It has grown to be a worldwide faith. It is most commonly spelled Baha'i, although alternate spellings of Ba'Hai, Bahai, and Bah'ai are sometimes seen. Siyyid 'Ali-Muhammad CE ) assumed the title Bab which means the Gate. In 1844-MAY-23 He announced the " Declaration of the Bab ." He explained that the purpose of His mission was to herald the arrival of "One greater than Himself" , Who would fulfill the prophetic expectations of all the great religions. This date is regarded as the founding of the Bahá'í Faith. His followers became known as Babis. 20,000 were martyred for their beliefs. His movement caused much religious ferment. This led to His execution in 1850 by order of the Shah's chief minister and at the instigation of Muslim clerics, who saw His movement as a threat to orthodox Islam. In 1863, one of the Bab's followers

by Imran Shaykh
The religious scholars of Islam severely condemned and criticized the views of Mirza Ali Mohammed which resulted in quite a few clashes at certain places and for that reason Mirza Ali Mohammed was arrested and put in prison. However, with the help of the Jailor of Isfahan prison, Manuchahr Khan, Bab escaped and went underground. But he was soon arrested and on 9th July, 1850 was put to death. Mirza Ali Mohammed's followers hid his body somewhat away from Tehran in a tomb known as " Imamzada Masoom's Tomb " for about 17 years. After that it was sent to Acca in Palestine as per the instructions of Bahaullah. In the meantime in 1852, some Bahai's plotted to kill the Shah of Iran, Nasiruddin Shah. As a result strict measures were taken to exterminate them. Subhe Azal managed to go underground but Mirza Hussain Ali was captured. However he managed to escape the very same year and along with Subhe Azal, succeded in reaching Baghdad. Here they stayed for 12 years and thus Baghdad became the centre of Bahai activities under the leadership of Subhe Azal. Meanwhile Mirza Hussain Ali, as a result of some dispute by some Bahai leaders went to Kurdistan in Turkey and stayed there. But even the Turkish government, seeing his nefarious activities and his close association with Russia and Britan dispatched him to Constantinopole. He stayed there for 4 years and it was from there that he announced that he was the real and true successor of Mirza Ali Mohammed and also that Allah, the Most High, had given him a more honored and lofty position than his predecessor.

Cole, a professor of Middle East history at the University of Michigan, is among the nation's leading experts on the faith. Until last May, when he formally resigned from the movement, he had been a Baha'i for 25 years. Now, however, he counts himself among a small but influential group of past and present liberal Baha'is angry over what they say is the hijacking of the faith by a cadre of conservative leaders more interested in preserving their authority than the Baha'i principle of ''independent investigation of reality.''
That principle is among the core tenets of the Baha'i faith first articulated by its founder, the l9th-century Persian prophet known as Baha'u'llah (the Glory of God) and who is revered by the faithful as an incarnation of God akin to Jesus.

http://www.fglaysher.com/bahaicensorship/Cole22.htm
It is typical of the Gilbert and Sullivan sort of silliness of high Baha'i officialdom that this little message should have been seen as some deep dark conspiracy. I think it is actually hilarious the way it was taken and is taken by the glaze-eyed, like Maneck. I was on Majnun. It was a little email list with seven or eight members, most of them Baha'i academics or intellectuals. It was set up at a time when group email was relatively new, so we could discuss things with one another. It was the kernel of what became later talisman@indiana.edu and ultimately H-Bahai (the latter now with a membership moving toward 200). Most of our discussions were about things like Arabic philology, which is evident even in the stray message. For what it is worth, I was personally tepid about making majnun into talisman, and warned that it probably wasn't a good idea, given how many narrow- minded people there were with power in the community. At one point one of the members was really upset about the prosecution of David Langness for an email message to talisman@indiana.edu. David had his administrative rights removed for differing on a minor historical point with the secretary of the NSA. Moreover, it was clear that Birkland was going to try to use the 'covenant' as a pretext to close talisman@indiana.edu down, and he had already made one feint in that direction. It seemed obvious that the Baha'i administration was at that time unalterably opposed to the existence of an unmoderated email forum not under their control, where views they did not like could be posted.

Orthodox Bahai Faith
The Orthodox Bahá'í Faith is a movement which started within the Baha'i Faith, though now independent of it. Total membership is estimated at up to a few thousand. Although the beliefs of the main division and the Orthodox Bahá'ís are for the most part identical, they differ on the issue of ongoing leadership. Between the years 1957 and 1960, the Bahá'í Faith underwent a severe test of succession. The majority of Bahá'ís, under the Hands of the Cause of God (a group of Bahá'ís that included Charles Mason Remey, and that was appointed by Shoghi Effendi according to the provisions of `Abdu’l-Bahá's Will and Testament) followed the Hands' corporate leadership of the Faith. The remainder followed Remey as the new individual leader of the group forming the Orthodox Bahá'í Faith.
Nature of the Dispute
During the time immediately following the unexpected death of Shoghi Effendi , the Guardian of the Baha'i Faith, Charles Mason Remey attempted to change the plan of his fellow Hands who had determined to elect the Universal House of Justice mentioned by both Baha'u'llah and Abdul-Baha . Remey signed the unanimous statement of the Hands that no document appointing a successor Guardian had been found, and that no such appointment of a blood relative was possible.

Baha'i Faith
The is a monotheistic religion , whose members follow the teachings of Bahá'u'lláh , their prophet founder. The Bahá'í Faith is the second most widespread of the world's independent religions (due to it's absence from the Vatican City), established in 236 countries and territories throughout the world. Bahá'ís come from over 2,100 ethnic, racial, and tribal groups and are numbered conservatively at some 6 million adherents worldwide. The central works of the Bahá'í Scriptures have been translated into 802 languages. Bahá'u'lláh taught that there is one God Who progressively reveals His will to humanity. Each of the great religions brought by the Messengers of God such as - Moses Krishna Buddha Zoroaster ... Muhammad - represents a successive stage in the spiritual development of civilization. Bahá'u'lláh, the most recent Messenger in this line as Bahá'ís believe, has brought teachings that address the moral and spiritual challenges of the modern world. As such, although the Baha'i Faith is not traditionally included among the Abrahamic religions , it recognizes many of the same personages, including it's own.

One religious group to originate in the past two centuries that has not received enough attention from evangelical Christians is the Baha'i World Faith. Baha'is believe that all of the world's major religions are progressive revelations from God, each designed for its particular historical era. The Baha'i religion teaches that Krishna, Zoroaster, Moses, Buddha, Confucius, Jesus, Muhammad, and the Bab (the Persian founder of a nineteenth-century religious movement which laid the foundation for Baha'ism) were all prophets or manifestations of God for their time. However, Baha'u'llah, the founder of the Baha'i religion, the successor of the Bab, and the most recent manifestation, is the one who should now be revered and obeyed.
Baha'u'llah's greatest teaching was the oneness and unity of mankind. According to Baha'u'llah, every race, both sexes, and the great religious truths all come from one God. While Christians may appreciate some of the humanitarian and peace doctrines of the Baha'is, they take issue with the Baha'i claim to compatibility with their faith; for Baha'ism denies several essential Christian doctrines.
