WOMEN'S LACROSSE FINISHES #8 IN WWLL T he UCSD Women's Lacrosse team hosted the WWLL playoffs this past weekend on Warren and Spanos Field. It was the first time hosting the event in nearly five years, and the fourth time hosting overall. The team entered the playoffs looking strong after finishing off their regular season with a pair of wins over Loyola Marymount and Pomona-Pitzer. Among the eight Division I teams vying for the championship, UCSD was ranked #6. This playoff appearance was the first for UCSD since entering the highly competitive Division I league. Unfortunately, UCSD lost both of its matches on Saturday, eliminating them from a run at the title. Facing a large and organized team from Santa Clara University in the opening round, the Tritons couldn't seem to find their rhythm. They faced a similar uphill battle against UC Santa Barbara in the consolation bracket. With only one senior graduating, next year's squad looks to be full of talent and experience, raising expectations for future playoff victories.

Badminton is an extremely popular sport within the University and Queen’s has a fine tradition of success in the various inter-Collegiate competitions. In Michaelmas, College League matches are played. We are currently in the Premier division, and actually won the League last year. Hilary Term is Cuppers term. Unfortunately, last year the team was eliminated at an early stage as due to other commitments we were unable to turn out a team for one of our matches We can enter as many teams as we like, and so there is plenty of opportunity to play competitive badminton at any standard. Practices will take place weekly and are open to all. We hope to enter a women’s team this year in both competitions, so ladies, please do come along
Captain James Shoesmith
Captain Mark Diffey Ill fortune again beset the College in cuppers. Queen’s B were given a tough first round match against New College A, and, despite a valiant effort, were unable to progress in the competition. Queen’s A met another difficult side in Jesus, and, although the match ended in a draw, the count-back rule resulted in its elimination by a mere five points. However, the promising standard of many of the performances gives cause for optimism for next year. Throughout the year, practices were very well attended by players of all abilities, suggesting that the high standard of badminton within Queen’s will continue.

1997 was a great year. As a team we shared in all the ups and downs. Many teams would fall apart after some of the things we went through. Such as our Semi-Finals loss to scripps Ranch. But those things only made us stronger. It made the returning players even more determined and commited as ever. All our success this year, we will owe to last years team. Many of us had never known defeat until 1997. It taught us much and we have gained tremedously from it. Even though we loss, the season was fun and unforgetable for us all. And that is the most important part of being on a sports team. And let me be the first to say, everything that this year's team of `98 accomplishes, is dedicated to that team of `97! V-Tech Unlimited

Badminton in the US
NORTH PALM BEACH, Fla., June, 1995 Nearly 12 million Americans played badminton at least once in 1994, but relatively few of them know it as the fiercely competitive game that evokes great passion in many parts of the world. "Badminton in the U.S. is usually a friendly, family-oriented pastime, but it has the potential to attract more interest as a competitive activity that confers fitness benefits," said Brad Patterson, executive director of the Racquet Sports Committee of the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association. About 1.6 million people in the U.S. play badminton frequently, at least 25 times a year, and about 200,000 play 75 or more times, according to a study sponsored by SGMA that has tracked sports participation since 1987. Badminton is played largely by young people: some 61% of all frequent players are between the ages of 6-17. In fact, 347 U.S. high schools have girls' interscholastic teams, while 183 have boy's teams, according to the National Federation of State High School Associations. There are 17,250 public high schools in the country. But the game also has adherents among older playersaging baby boomers and seniorssays Jim Hadley, executive director of the United States Badminton Association, the sport's governing body. "Older players often prefer the game to tennis because the exercise benefits are just as great yet you don't have to spend time gathering up balls. If you miss a shot, the bird just dies at your feet."
