History
Badminton probably originated in India as a grownup's version of a very old children's game known in England as battledore and shuttlecock, the battledore being a paddle and the shuttlecock a small feathered cork, now usually balled a "bird." Played for centuries by children in India, Siam, and Japan, this was a cooperative game in which the players worked together to keep the "bird" in the air for as long as possible. A net was added and the game had become a competitive sport called "poona" by the 1860s, when British Army officers were playing it in India. Some of them brought equipment back to England and introduced the new sport there during the early 1870s. It was played at a lawn party held by Duke of Beaufort at his country place, Badminton, in 1873, and it became known as "the Badminton game" among various guests who introduced it to other friends. The Bath Badminton Club, organized in 1877, developed the first written rules, which have remained essentially the same. In 1893, the Badminton Association of England was founded as the first national governing body and the first All-England championship was held in 1899.

Olympic Medalists: Badminton
History
Badminton was a demonstration sport at the 1972 Olympics and became a medal event in 1992. Originally, finalists were determined through a round-robin tournament, followed by a single-elimination tournament for the top finishers, who were seeded based on their round robin records. The semifinal losers were awarded joint bronze medals. Since 1996, the whole tournament has been single elimination. The top eight ranked players are seeded and the other eight are placed in a blind draw. The losers in the semifinal round now play for the bronze medal. The mixed doubles championship was added in 1996. Top of page

OLYMPIC HISTORY In 1996, China, which had failed to reach any of the four finals in Barcelona, stood at the top of the medals table as Asian athletes won 14 of the 15 medals. The only medal to go beyond Asia provided the shock of the Atlanta tournament, as Poul-Erik Hoyer-Larsen, of Denmark, won the men's singles. Denmark and Britain could challenge Asian supremacy in Sydney. In the singles, Hoyer-Larsen, now ranked No 3 in the world, will defend his title, and may find Peter Gade Christensen, the world No 1, his toughest opponent. Indonesia, China and Malaysia account for 11 of the other top 16 players in the world. In mixed doubles, Simon Archer and Joanne Goode, of Britain, are strong medal hopes after finishing runners-up at the world championships in 1999. Among women, Camilla Martin, of Denmark, is a leading contender for the singles title alongside Dai Yun and Ye Zhaoying, of China.

After receiving the recognition of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1954, the Federation of Malaya Olympic Council, as it was then known, sent a contingent of 33 athletes from 6 sports to participate in the Olympic Games in 1956 in Melbourne. Since then the Olympic Council of Malaysia, as it is known since 1964, has been participating in all the Olympic Games, except the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games.
The Olympic Contingent of the Federation of Malaya to the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games comprised six athletes, two swimmers, 18 Hockey players, three Weightlifters and four shooters. There was only one female athlete in the Contingent, Ms. Annie Choong, who participated in Athletics. Amongst the Olympians were Koh Eng Tong, the 1950 British Empire Weightlifting gold medallist in the Featherweight Division and Tan Kim Bee, the silver medallist in the Light Heavyweight Division. The Hockey team finished 9th out of 12 teams. The Chef de Mission was Mr. H.M. De Souza (Hockey) and the Flag Bearer was Tan Eng Bee (Weightlifting)

Before Iran and Iraq were countries, the area was known as Babylonia. And this is where the game of badminton began. Although it technically wasn't a game for them. It was more like hocus-pocus fortune telling. The Babylonians were big on this sort of stuff, and would go to a priest (for a fee of course) to get their future told. The priest would do it in several ways: Dice, Cards, Tea Leaves, Bones, Dreams, and a few other gross ways I won't go into. But, another technique that the so-called future predicting priest used to foresee a person's future was a ceremony rather than a one-on-one personal reading. A crowd would form. Incense was lit. Drums were banged. Magical chants were sung. You in the mood yet? Should be. Out comes the priest, with two participants each holding a wooden paddle. Then the priest called for silence! A hush came over the crowd, and the two people with the paddles then batted a ball made of tightly wound wool yarn back and forth. The length of time they kept the ball in play was suppose to reveal how long they would live. Well, this worked for a while until the people finally caught on that they were not really discovering their future because in reality they really had control over it by keeping the ball in the air as long as they wanted and so they are the ones that really had influence over their futures, not the priests.

Badminton Badminton debuted as a full-medal sport at the 1992 Games in Barcelona, Spain. Badminton is a game that somewhat resembles tennis. It can be played by two or four players, either indoors or outdoors. A net is stretched across the middle of the court with the top edge 1.524 meters from the ground at the center and 1.55 meters at the posts. The players hit the shuttlecock back and forth over the net with lightweight rackets. Click a link to

In singles, the service goes to the opponent. In doubles, it is the partner who gets the next serve. However, if both doubles partners have just taken turns serving, then the service goes to one of their opponents. Competition
There are competitions for both singles and doubles in which men and women compete separately. However, starting at Atlanta in 1996, mixed doubles were played. All matches are played the best two out of three games.

Badminton was invented long ago; its origins date back at least two thousand years to the game of battledore and shuttlecock played in ancient Greece, India and China. Badminton took its name from Badminton House in Gloucestershire, the home of the Duke of Beaufort, where the sport was played in the last century. By coincidence, Gloucestershire is now the base for the International Badminton Federation. Founded in 1934 with nine members - Canada, Denmark, England, France, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand, Scotland and Wales, membership of the International Badminton Federation has risen steadily. There was a notable increase in new members after badminton's Olympic debut at Barcelona. Development in the sport continues to grow and the current 142 members is expected to increase further.

Ananova: Olympic sport guide - Badminton A guide to the Olympic sport of Badminton Courts have dimensions of 6.1m x 13.4m. The net is 1.55m high at the centre. Courts have a clearance on all sides of 2m and a ceiling height of 12m. Scoring matches are played to the best of three sets and sets are won by the first player (or pair) to reach 15 points. For women's singles it is 11 points. An exception arises when the score reaches 13-all or 14-all (or 9-all or 10-all in women's events), where the first player or players to reach the relevant score can choose to "set" or not "set" the game. If the game is "set", the score is called to love-all and the first player or players to reach the "set" score wins the game. At 9-all, the "set" score is 3 points; at 10-all the "set" score is 2 points; at 13-all the "set" score is 5 points; at 14-all the "set" score is 3 points. Only the serving side can score a point, so winning and keeping the right to serve is of fundamental importance in badminton. History Badminton was a demonstration sport for the Olympic Games in 1972, making its Olympic debut in 1992 at the Barcelona Olympic Games.

Badminton was derived from a child's game called battledore and shuttlecock, which involved two players hitting a shuttlecock back and forth with miniture rackets. In India during the 18th Century, the game was called "Poona." British Army Officers stationed there brought the Indian version of Badminton back to England in the 1860's. In 1873, the Duke of Beaufort launched the new sport at his country place, "Badminton" in Gloucestershire. During that time, the game was nameless and was referred to as "The Game of Badminton." It was later officially named Badminton, after the country place. In England, the sport was played under the rules prevailed in India. From the English viewpoint, the rules were somewhat contradictory and confusing. In 1887, a group of badminton players called the Bath Badminton Club standardized the rules and made the game more applicable to English ideas and the basic regulation. In 1885, the Badminton Association (of England) was formed to take over the authority of the Bath Badminton Club and the new group constructed rules which now govern the game worldwide. Badminton quickly spread from England to the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, and made huge strides in Europe. Although it was first played by men, women became keen to the game and interest is now about equally divided.

So you think you know about badminton?
Most people have seen badminton in one form or another and consequently think they know badminton. However badminton may not be quite what you imagine. Here are a few common questions and answers regarding badminton. Badminton is that game we all play at family picnics and in the backyard, right? The backyard/picnic version of badminton is one type of badminton. Badminton as a sport is played indoors with much more high-tech equipment. Modern racquets are complex alloys of carbon graphite, boron, ceramic, aluminium and steel in various proportions. These racquets are very light, less than 3.5 ounces and can be strung very tightly. Also the shuttlecock is made of feathers, not plastic, and weighs between 4.74 and 5.50 grams. Shuttles cost about $20 for a dozen and last about one game, at the most. The net is five feet high, not the height of a volleyball net. Even so it is still pretty slow, isn't it? To play competitive badminton you need explosiveness, lightening quick reflexes and rapid hand-eye coordination. Why you ask? Well the shuttlecock has been clocked in excess of 180 mph (NO this is not a misprint). That's faster than the fastest tennis serve, and occurs regularly during rallies at the top level. Add onto this the fact that in doubles games there are often 40 or 50 shots in 20 seconds you can see that the first sentence was no exaggeration.
